The signs were there for a year and Xbox fans were in denial.

"He's talking about Call of Duty"
"He's talking about games like Elder Scrolls Online"
"It's just small games."
"It's just multiplayer games."
"It's just 4 games."

Not batting an eye? I doubt it after many have denied it for so long.
Why bother dude. All they are going to do is lie, and move the goalposts yet again. Though, it's entertaining watching them go through the stages in real-time.

In another thread there's somebody saying that the split S/X model is something other console manufacturers will follow in the future.
The big difference to me is that future console makers are gonna be making the weaker SKU a handheld, which gives a valid reason as to why things would run gimped (battery life, cooling and noise), and would make certain features redundant (no one is gonna play local co-op on a handheld device).

There's not a single shred of evidence to support this notion but keep believing it if it helps you sleep at night.

Sony is known to follow the money. If they see other people doing something that is making lots of money they will attempt to replicate it. GaaS. Subscriptions. Now putting Horizon lego on Switch. (As if this isn't just dipping their toes in the pond). It's only a matter of time.

From the beginning of this generation anyone with common sense has been able to make logical comments about things Sony has done with hardware and software or may plan to do in the future and time and time again it is laughed at by the hardcore audience until it actually happens.

I know this sort of shit isn't the future lots of us want, but it is most likely the inevitable future we are all headed for.

The moment Phil went for Actibliz and jimbo lost his mind told me software monopoly is back on the menu. Basically folks did not read Phil’s comments on the industry. If msft wants to eat, it has to put its titles everywhere and then go for the next big boy acquisition.

Not to be argumentative, but there's a big difference between saying "other games [beyond the 4] could come if it makes sense" and what he has said here - that no game is off the table, followed in the next breath by mention of Halo, the best-known core pillar Xbox exclusive.

You said it's "basic PR" that the first means the second, but I don't think so. The first is a much more guarded statement. Here he is saying, "Everything is on the table, including Halo, Gears, Forza, and everything else you might name." If he had said THAT back in February, the internet would've gone wild. But he didn't. He was much more cautious, tip-toeing around.
Honestly, I indeed can't find it in that video, so it might have been in an interview around that time, as the update was on februari 15th and I made that post on the 19th.
But since I can't find where I got it from, I'll just retract my statement. (directed more towards ( Topher Topher )

Whether or not it was said at that time doesn't matter though, because it's being said now all the same, as was something similar being said back in june:

So ultimately, the situation ends up the same.

Oh ok then tell Sony to rip all their releases back off of PC and now the Switch.

Fact of the matter is being more flexible and putting games on other systems brings in more money.

I know some people don't like it, but it's fact.

I agree but Sony isn't dumb they know this could affect their console business and they don't want to do that. Bringing in more money now doesn't help them if it affects their consoles sales later down the line. That's why they are forcing PSN signups IMO for PC. They want to see who has both a PC and PS and who just has a PC. They can use that info to plan for future releases.

In no way shape or form will they release on Xbox though. That's a straight up competitor I don't see that happening. On top of that Xbox is hurting right now it makes no sense to help bolster their platform right now with PS releases. Best to just wait them out as they move to more of a 3rd party publisher role with less focus on the console. Then hope you can pick up as many of their users as possible. Last quarterly report from PS was very good so they aren't in a position where they have to hurry and make as much money as possible. They can take their time.

I do feel once Xbox is pretty much done done (if it get to that point) that PS will start releasing nearly everywhere they can. Then again I'm not sure about the switch if they decide to enter the handheld market.

I think you are drawing parallels here that are not realistic. Sony's expansion to other consoles has largely only been when a partnership such as Lego or MLB is involved though I believe. For other first party games, there is much more incentive for Microsoft to publish their games on PlayStation than there is for Sony to publisher their games on Xbox. I don't see that changing.

Yeah, I agree with your overall sentiment. Really the only reason I wanted clarification is because I've said in the past that it looked to me like Phil Spencer was flatout lying at that "business update" by saying "only four games", but I don't want to say that and be factually wrong.

Appreciate it either way

But Sony ain't putting the games they own on Xbox. Xbox is putting the games they own on PlayStation. Phil Spencer may not have a red line, but obviously Sony does.

Yes, we end where a lot of people thought we would - with everything being on the table, including core pillar Xbox franchises. The interesting part to me is Phil's statements about where the line is. First it was 4 games, then it was "well maybe others if it makes sense," then it was "more are coming" and now it's "nothing is off limits, even Halo." I hear a gradual creep in those statements.

I was thinking maybe MS would continue to keep a small stable of core pillar franchises (Halo, Gears, Forza) exclusive, as a way to retain some hardware identity, bolster Xbox fan morale, and give people a reason to buy an Xbox. But that is looking increasingly unlikely.

That doesn't really correlate with what Phil is saying here.

But who knows, he's known for saying one thing while doing another.
Well have said this a million times Phil is the ultimate used car salesman and will say what he thinks people want to hear today and that might sound differently in 6 months from now

Wasn't it in the business meeting thing when they announced the first four games he laughed and said something like "And no that doesnt include Indiana Jones"

Well guess what

I think the new Xbox will be here sooner than people think
Will it be called "S" or "X", consonants that have no way of being confused in English?

I propose "Xbox 180". Like, a turn to a completely opposite direction. Also, it would be 30 times PS6.

Yep. Just like when he was talking about handhelds in June at their big event and he acted like there was something concrete there. Only to find out they will get to it "one day". By the time they get around to it the handheld market is going overflowing with options that no one is going to care about anything Microsoft can bring to the table. Valve can rest easy now. Only thing Microsoft is working on for gamers is that silly Windows app.

This applies to their "biggest tech leap" nonsense as well. So much talk. Contrast that with their competition.

So many sniper battles with my friends on Blood Gulch in Halo, that map alone made owning an Xbox worth it

Just not sure it would have taken away from my enjoyment if Playstation people were also playing it
I can agree with you there, a good e.g for this gen would be helldivers 2. That's a game that should be on all platforms. As a playstation only gamer these days, why would it affect me that more people get to play.

My personal favourites from the original Xbox were, ninja gaiden, chronicles of riddick, morrowwind, halo 1 and 2, doom 3, and the jade empire.

I think he is trying to say that if Xbox is successful with the moves they are making, it will only be a matter of time for Sony to follow. Sony isn't going to abandon the strategy that has been working for them, not without reason, of-course and he put somewhat of a spin on that ("...drag their heels"), but personally, if Xbox does find success in pivoting like this, it should not surprise anyone that the others will also adapt. It's just how things are.
It still won't make a difference. MS will just be a full blown third party publisher again (prior to Xbox), not unlike Activision and Bethesda were prior to the consolidation.

MS is doing this to keep them in the black in the gaming division. They need to do this, not a want to do this.

Sony's strategy is still very much reliant on hardware saturation. They are not going to throw that under the bus just because MS had to shift back to third party.

No matter how much you try and "SonyToo" a Phil Spencer thread. They are not on the same trajectory. Even more so now that Xbox as a console, is all but abandoned.

FTC will continue to do nothing

Meanwhile, the new UK government is much more left-wing than the previous one, which almost blocked the purchase.

Apart from the entire EU, which must block future purchases after having already approved purchases worth 70 billion, which reduced competition even further with the Xbox launching everything on the PlayStation

Yeah, the position Xbox finds itself in, is definitely not of their own choosing. They certainly would have done things differently if they were in Sony's position in the market but if they are not going to give up, and maintain relevancy, the moves they are making is exactly what someone in their position should make.

Might still be too early to say anything but if they can't find success the traditional way, they have to try to do things differently in the hope that they are successful and if they end up being successful, others might follow. Not a guarantee but nothing ever is right?

But wait, there's more.

The Series S and X will soon close the gap on the PS5 pro via the power of secret sauce:

The comments are amazing. Still, it was fun to see a return to 2020 marketing style for Xbox. The guy is talented, even if it is bullshit.

I'm sure MS has made an attempt to buy Steam. Doesn't make any sense for them not to at least try.
I never know really quite where their focus is from one day to the next. But with a hybrid console/PC and a handheld to come. And a notoriously despised in house store. You'd certainly think they would if they could.

I don't understand any of this. None of this sounds like they give a shit about consoles. Why are they going to bother releasing another one? They have no outlined strategy in the console business to gain an uptake. Why buy a new Xbox when you can play the games on playstation. Gamepass/cloud isn't the answer in this realm because it's already hardware agnostic. I do understand cloud is the future here with them. But this middle term solution is directionless in this sense.

Amazing they could have bought pretty much all of that list bar the top two for what they paid just for ABK. As if you didn't need anymore info that MS are fucking stupid this is it.

And ABK turns over more than all those companies than the top two with the biggest seller of the last 10 years.

I’m all for Microsoft dropping Gamepass on PS5 and bringing 30 more million subscribers to the fold if they decided to start dropping the staples on Sony.

The insanity of the numbers Halo & Forz Multi would do and keep doing with CoDs launch’s being the biggest ever is just to big an opportunity to not enjoy if it was to happen.
