I betting Phil probably wanted to keep things exclusive, but Satya and the higher ups probably wanted to go a different direction. At the end of the day Microsoft is better off just being a publisher with all the IP they have now.

I gotta say, it seems like people are being a little spiteful towards him. Obviously the consoles aren’t making a super compelling case against a PS5, but it seems like MS must be happy enough with Xbox’s revenue. Just seems like they might be getting out of the hardware market, which is a shame but doesn’t seem like the end of the world. Honestly, I have harsher feelings towards Sony as a manufacturer, as I feel like their build quality has felt pretty lacking for a pretty long time. I definitely see a desire for a dedicated gaming console in peoples’ lives, but I’m personally feeling less and less enamored with each new generation. Series X and PS5 are just about as finnicky as a PC to run their games, and are far more limited. I have to wonder if Xbox just sees the writing on the wall.

In any case, Phil Spencer genuinely seems like a guy who just really loves games. Kinda hate some of the vitriol he seems to be getting lately.

He hasn't really answered the value proposition of why anyone should choose an Xbox next-gen - but perhaps they'll do something new and that's to come.

The concern I want him to address is, so there are no first party exclusives, but for those who do buy a next-gen Xbox, how do you guarantee them third party games? Some are already skipping the Series X. What happens when the next console sells 1/4 of what the S/X does? How do they keep third party games launching on the platform with such a small install base?
I bet they'll release a next-gen console for prestige reasons.

They want to keep Sony in check...

Still can't believe XBOX Series S/X have flopped harder than XBone.

I mean XSS/XSX looked really promising back in 2020... total incompetence on their part.

They can’t. And the series S existing will force this scenario to be more devs like black myth wukong skipping the Xbox entirely.

The Xbox will become the uneducated chud bro way of playing sports games and call of duty. Nothing else.
So PS players will be like that, but for gaming?

Why is Phil's health linked directly to how Xbox is doing?

I'm concerned that if Xbox goes down fully, Phil might not be with us any more.

Because he's in charge of a mega-million entity and it's been plummeting for years. Just from the time they acquired Bethesda to today he looks to have aged 15 years.

How the fuck do you head a Microsoft division, with what’s basically infinite monopoly money available, and still fumble console sales? That’s like having a cheat code for unlimited resources and still losing on easy mode. This guy should have been let go a long fucking time ago.

They're out of touch and the whole MS business model lets bosses play with the ball and when they fumble they get a bonus while whatever staff the've aquired get the axe. Remember when Phil got all those life time achievement awards in 2022? Usually that's how you "sunset" someones career. I really thought he was a goner. But they decided to go all in on aquisitions and he's still here.

Microsoft, if you’re reading this, make me CEO.

First thing I’m doing? Every single damn IP we own is going Xbox-exclusive, yes, even Call of Duty. Game Pass? Sure, but only for old-ass games. You want the latest and greatest? Buy an Xbox.

And before the regulators start crying, fuck it, pay the damn fee, grease the wheels, whatever it takes. We can afford it. Hell, I’d even split Xbox off from Microsoft just to make the bureaucrats happy, while keeping an “obviously open partnership” moving forward. They can whine all they want, but we’d still be running the show.

Next up? Dropping a new Xbox so powerful it makes high-end gaming PCs look like an abacus, yeah, we’ll sell it at a loss, but with every major franchise locked down, who gives a shit? We’d own the industry.

And just to twist the knife, I’d hit up Trump and be like, "Bruh, America First, right? Sony’s from Japan." Then, I’d throw whatever money we need at the winning political team to keep regulators off our backs while we take over the damn market.

You want dominance, Microsoft?

I remember reading an article about when Sony first started with the PS1 and head of Sony at the time wanted their games to be multiplatform. I can't remember who it was but they told them no and said that is not how you make a successful console. For all this talk, Phil is just a yes man who don't know how to run a successful studio. Satya cut off his balls and made him his bitch. That's why buddy has aged like out of date milk because that stress of being someone's bitch has taken a toll on him.

Get a couple exclusive JRPGs again and this is a genuinely golden plan

I just purchased gold membership in hopes I can use the N word once. This is my way of saying thanks for letting me be myself for once neogaf.

It's incredible how for an entire decade Phil Spencer was treated like the savior of the Xbox brand, a kind of messiah for his fanboys and in the end he destroyed the brand despite the infinite money of M$, a real incompetent who I don't know how he is still in the position (and Greenberg, etc...).

Ultimately money only goes so far. Spencer’s plan of acquisitions and Game Pass may have worked, however I never truly felt like the acquired studios were able to escape Microsoft’s oppressive cooperate stranglehold.

For a plan like this to work you have to truly allow the creatives to create. They need an environment that they want to be a part of. You could see from the Double Fine developer briefing held by Matt Booty that the people were not happy with the new terms imposed upon them. Their faces told the entire story.

Even their internal studios like 343 and Turn10 are struggling despite getting much longer dev times and budgets compared to past games, both fucked around for 6 years with only having a shell of a game to show for it. Sometimes having strict deadlines is more beneficial for the end product, people work better under pressure to a certain extent.

They killed him and cloned him, didn't they?? The real Phil Spencer would never lie or contradict himself.

I mean, at least Ryan was quite straightforward and wasn't trying to play a good guy. Funnier still, he was spot-on on a few occasions too.

Phil has this used car salesman aura he never managed to shake off and it has nothing to do with other public figures.

Jim Ryan is nearly the complete opposite of Phil Spencer if only by virtue of not having to yap all the damn time. That used car salesman shtick isn't just Phil Spencer though. It is Matt Booty, Aaron Greenberg and most recently, Sarah Bond with her proclamation that the next Xbox would be the "greatest technological leap in a generation".
