PlayStation CEO Don’t See Consoles Disappearing Anytime Soon; PS5 Likely to Last Through Next-Gen Similar to PS4

In an interview about PlayStation’s 30th anniversary with Japanese publication Famitsu, Hideaki Nishino, Sony Interactive Entertaniment (SIE) Platform Business Group CEO, was asked a few things about the future of the brand.

Nishino states (translated by DeepL), “As of today, many PS4 games are being played, and the number of PS5 games is increasing rapidly. It is unlikely that this will suddenly change tomorrow, so there is no doubt that home video game consoles will remain at the center of our business for some time.”
Continuing with the thought, Nishino adds, “However, we are also seeing an increase in the number of PCs and other different styles, so we are in the process of thinking about how to increase the number of PlayStation users overall, including those on the PSN. Some people may misunderstand me when I say this, but if you have cloud gaming on PS Portal and PS5 games running, some people may think that we have already entered the era of cloud gaming. However, you still need a controller and a screen in your hand, and we believe that hardware will not disappear just yet.”

PlayStation Boss Doesn’t Think the PS5 Will Affect the Release Timing of the PS6

Hideaki-Nishino-ps5-pro.jpg.webp

Nishino says, “We believe that PS5 will have a long lifecycle, just like PS4. However, I don’t think it is right to delay the timing of the launch of the next product that incorporates new technology because of the long time it will take. The timing for the launch of new hardware is related to the time frame in which technology evolves and the time frame in which we are able to implement that technology. Therefore, I think it is important to offer new products while people play the ones that are currently being used, and to expand the total number of games we offer.”

If PS6 releases with a handheld version, you will see cross-gen lasting for a very long time.
Which makes sense, it's not like you'll need the latest hardware available just to play My Summer Vacation 6 (we'll get 5 before that, right?).

Well at least people who invested in PS5 will be able to see it be supported for a while yet. Also, nice to hear him say consoles arent going anywhere anytime soon.

the ps4 released 11/2013. the ps5 released 11/2020. so, we're 3 years away from the ps6? i'm thinking we're looking ahead to a few cross-gen exclusives...

Yeah, 2028 seems to be the target date.

And hopefully longer shelf life will allow for some hardware discounts as I believe Sony is leaving a lot of their uses behind as they haven’t upgraded to PS5.

If Sony managed to drop the price to $350 in a year and $300ish at PS6 release they could get a lot more folks to buy into the ecosystem.

You want the old controller buy the old system.

Xbox tried the new controller that didn't change much from the last console & the result isn't good.

Xbox realized there was no need to add more stuff to the controller and raise the cost. The Xbox controller is great as it is.

Sony keeps adding more and more features, the cost keeps going up, and they're compromising by making them cheaper and more fragile. I'd rather they innovate by keeping feature parity with the Dual Sense and making it more reliable. Give us hall effect sticks, a battery that doesn't die so quick, and build quality that doesn't see buttons breaking after a year of use. That would be some great innovation. But none of that would make the existing Dual Sense incompatible with the PS6.

Stop it my PS4 & PS5 controllers are still in perfect condition

Not cheaper nor more fragile than the XSX joypad with its delicate, super fragile LB, RB bumpers, sticky Y/A buttons, grindy, plastic on plastic vibration sound, triggers that make contact with the plastic shell resulting in grinding sounds etc etc.
Meanwhile, my X360 joypads still work normally (minor analogue drift aside).

So no, the Xbox/XSX/Xss joypad is far from "perfect" - are they all like that ? Obviously not but let's just try as not to make hyperbolic statements.

Also : I also thought that MS's joypad was "perfect" as is until I held a Dualsense in my hands, those fuxking haptics are the real deal

I've had the same experience going from PS4 to PS5 personally.

Have a bunch of DS4's that still work perfectly fine, and have bought 6 DualSense controllers and had problems with 4 of them. Triggers that just became "limp", stuck buttons, just outright not working. It's possible I'm jus unlucky but hard for me not to question the relability of the DualSense.

It's all anecdotal though, but it makes me pissed off I can't just use DS4 on PS5 lol

I believe you man, every 4-5 months I have to clean and lubricate those fucking springs which reside under the triggers otherwise it's sqeaky-squeak time, and the O button on my 2nd DS was getting mushy after a couple of months - nothing that some contact cleaner couldn't fix though.

Let me put it this way : quality has gone to shit when it comes to...everything, 2000+ Eurodollars TVs which have their MBs fried after a couple of years, joypads, coffee makers, kitchen appliances, PC peripherals...everything.

Meanwhile, my late grandfather's SABA tv is still fully functional after 40 years, my 8+ years old MS BT keyboard still works, my PS2 /OG Xbox joypads still work, my...you get my drift 😉

Yeah totally.

I do think adding complexity to something can multipl7 the effect though. The trigger mechanisms for instance in the PS5 are just inherently more likely to have a problems.. I mean you are basically fighting against a motor by design.

I don't really use Xbox controllers anymore though so can't really comment on their reliability lol Was big big OG/360 fan and preferred the basic design for a long (partly due to having huge hands) but switched over to only PS in the PS4 era personally.

I would say it makes it sound worse? According to the news the PS6 is not going to be delayed, so you paid $699 to play slightly better versions of PS5 games and downgraded PS6 versions when for less money you could have the PS6 in a few years.🤷
The case with every Pro system

What guarantees you that there will be PS6 versions of, say, Dragon's Dogma 2 or Lies of P in the future?

At this rate even late 2028 sounds too early for PS6. We're not looking at a PS4-to-PS5 scenario. PS5 does not suffer the same heinous bottlenecks and shoddy build quality of PS4. It still feels very much premium both in its performative capabilities and price. PS4 at this stage was like 300€. I have never seen PS5 Disc Edition go below 500€. Sure there is the inflation and all that but rapidly increasing costs and higher profit margins do directly harm hardware migration. This is what happened to smartphones too after all. The incentive for PS6 only games will be even less as downscaling to PS5 should be fairly effortless. Besides, devs hit a budget/deadline bottleneck far earlier than a hardware bottleneck these days. Games like TLOU2, RDR2, FFXV and Ghost of still put most modern AAA titles to shame.

I think it wil be a challenge for Sony to convince PS5 owners to migrate quickly to PS6. The differences won't be that dramatic for end users while prices will have increased even further.

Thinks buying more servers can fix a bad patch
Certainly seems like they are acknowledging that PC and other styles of gaming is the future, and that they will be coping by increasing the number of PlayStation users overall on these areas.

Glad that they are accepting the inevitable while making preparation with the PC releases now instead of later.

Pro just launched and it sounds like they’re already starting to build up hype for the next big thing.
When is PS6 coming? 2027?

PlayStation consoles and accessories still sell extremely well so of course it will continue. That being said PS+ growth has completely stagnated for years and PSN MAU has grown extremely slowly, so they are looking for potential ways to expand the ecosystem.
