As part of Sony's Consumer Electronics Show briefing this week, the company announced a huge new milestone for the PlayStation platform. In December 2023, the entire PlayStation ecosystem reached 123 million active users, which CEO Kenichiro Yoshida said was a new record.
According to VGC, MAU is defined by Sony as the approximate number of unique accounts that logged into the PlayStation Network to use a service or play a game.
The record figure follows news last month that PlayStation 5 sales have surpassed 50 million units worldwide. The console reached the sales milestone on December 9, 2023, a little over three years after it launched in November 2020.
PS5 has outsold Xbox Series X/S by almost 3-to-1 last year, according to data released by research firm Ampere Analysis.
Sony is aiming to ship 25 million PS5 consoles during its current fiscal year ending in March 2024. If achieved, it would beat a 25-year-old console sales record set when the original PlayStation shipped 22.6 million units over a 12-month period.
