Circana December 2024: #1 Black Ops 6 #2 Madden #3 College Football #14 Indiana Jones ; PS5 #1 Units + Rev, NSW #2 Units + Rev

PS5 dominating sales in the US and also in accessories, it is already the third console that has generated the most income and it is only 4 years old, it is normal for Switch to drop so much ... it is 8 years old, Xbox is a total debacle, the only thing they have achieved after spending 70,000 million on ABK is to sink the console by selling almost half less and that Sony takes 80-90% of COD sales for its console (Depending on territories), Indiana Jones another sales disaster, it was clear that despite many damage control threads that were made the game had sold little, even Astrobot surpassed it.
It's funny these days the PS doomed threads when real numbers come out.
LOL @ all the posts on here and on Reddit about how Astrobot only sold 1.5 million in its first month and so it didn't deserve GOTY, while simultaneously cursing Dorito Pope for not considering Indy for GOTY. They were so convinced that if the Game Awards happened in January then Indy would have won

I think if there are people who own both a home console and Switch and bought the game on Switch (and enjoyed the gameplay but not the technical performance), then they are more likely to buy the sequel on a home console than not buy the sequel at all.

But that's just a guess.

I would not have enjoyed the loading times and I doubt I would have finished the game, especially as a kid.

The PS Portal must be doing some serious numbers.

I wouldn't go that far. It's kind of the misleading nature of these sales charts.

PS Portal leads in dollar sales not unit sales, which isn't to say it isn't selling well but if you compare it to the Dual Sense, the Dual Sense would have to sell 3 units for every portal and the PS5 comes with a dual sense. So to get even close to those numbers on an annual basis, you're going to really need to sell to PC consumers more and more.

PS Portal has only been on the market a little over a year, where as people already have 4 years of dual sense sales.

Outside of the Dual Sense, there isn't really a clear cut accessory that would push for the lead spot on the market in dollar sales.

PS Portal's ranking in dollar sales for accessories is probably more an indictment on PSVR2 and Sony's failed headset line than it is a success story for PS Portal.

LOL @ all the posts on here and on Reddit about how Astrobot only sold 1.5 million in its first month and so it didn't deserve GOTY, while simultaneously cursing Dorito Pope for not considering Indy for GOTY. Goes back to the constant astroturfing in gaming today. Astro Bot is a failure because it didn't selling 7 million copies in 2 months or only sold to x percentage of PS5 owners...

It's crazy how talking points get passed around and stick, but then simply fall off. It's also a bit weird how Sony doesn't always update their game sales or how they've really not pushed Astro Bot marketing even after it won GOTY. I feel they put more into advertising Lego Horizon, but who knows they may have been contractually incentivized to more heavily market that.

True. Though at least they did get something for their billions. (Side eyes the Bungie purchase)

70B that has a 10% correction in value is more than twice what Sony paid which is completely lost unless they can turn the business around. So many game publishers have gone down in value since 2022 when MS announced the purchase price, from EA to Ubisoft. Activision has probably evaporated the value of their corporation just like the rest.

We should find out soon enough.

I'm thinking global Q3 (Oct to Dec) 2024 shipments (millions) will be something like this:

numbers in brackets are for Q3 2023

PS5: 8.1 (8.2)- The data seems to suggest it is very close to last year with November being higher globally but October and December slightly down
NSW: 5.8 (6.9)- Japan is flat but Europe and the U.S are 15% to 20% down
XBS: 2.2 (3.4) - Substantially down in the U.S and Europe

Microsoft's quarterly earnings release is on January 29th, Nintendo's is on February 4th and Sony's is on February 13th.

If Gran Turismo belonged to any other publisher, they would go all out in making it more successful. Not sure why Sony is doing the bare minimum.
Because Sony isn’t any other publisher. They are a platform holder. The purpose of GT is to get people to buy their platform over the competition. The goal isn’t to maximize unit sales. It’s to maximize PS market share.

Those goals can go hand in hand, which is why you see games like Spider-Man and God of War on PC now.

GT on PC would make the PS5 version even more popular with more players and more interest surrounding the franchise.

Gran Turismo fell behind other franchises because it was limited to PS3, a major blow for Polyphony Digital at the time. Could and should be the biggest racing game on the planet.

They don’t go hand in hand. Which is what MS found out the hard way. And this is ignoring the fact the GT7 hasn’t fallen behind anything. The franchise has remained a consistent seller and remains one of the biggest in the industry. GT5 was a huge seller and a major contributor to keeping the ps3 alive. There wouldn’t even be a ps5 today if not for that and other high quality exclusives. What “huge blow”? Was it a huge blow to ND that uncharted was exclusive? If Sony put all those games on PC or 360 like every other publisher their console sales would have collapsed.

Do you also think Nintendo fell behind by not porting to PC? Pretty sure Zelda would sell quite a lot on Steam.

And why even stop at PC? Why not bring everything over to Switch 2 while they are at it? It would result in even more sales and even more “success” right?

Pause and read what people write.

I said Gran Turismo fell behind on the PS3. GT7 is not on the PS3, so am I referring to GT7?

Microsoft porting games to PC didn't hurt them. Not releasing games that people want hurt them.

Absolutely, if Nintendo ported their games onto PC, they'd be double the size they currently are. The one caveat I'd add is that Nintendo's hardware is sold at a premium whereas Microsoft and Sony largely subsidize. That makes a big difference in terms of the balance between software and hardware sales.

Like I said, I think Sony would be really smart to put Spider-Man games on Switch and Switch 2 depending on their handheld plans. I'd bring Gran Turismo over too, because why not.

What did gt5 fall behind to on the ps3?

As for the rest of your post, you are clearly misguided. There is a reason Nintendo isn’t multiplatform. They aren’t run by short sighted morons. The fact that gt7, DeS, and BB haven’t been ported yet tells me someone at Sony might still have a brain left.

Gran Turismo was the pinnacle of franchises for Sony and it fell behind titles like God of War, Uncharted, The Last of Us, Horizon, and Spider-Man, which you'll notice are all on PC.
All of those franchises surpassed GT without ever having been on PC, which barely added any sales to the total figures after all was said and done. Sony creating a bunch of new popular franchises doesn’t mean GT fell behind. All they accomplished was that in the future when someone googles one of them after watching a movie or show the top result might be a link to the Steam store instead of PS.

They're just examples. Games like Madden, CoD, Fortnite... all do significantly better as well because they're available on multiple platforms.

Sony is making hundreds of millions of dollars with their PC push and it is still early days.

People don't buy games via google. They buy the game on the platform they already own. If they don't own a platform, the question isn't which of these two links should I buy it on, it's what platform makes sense for me to buy, i.e. nothing changes.
