Playstation Portal Cloud Streaming for PS+

I’m not a fan of cloud/streaming for games and will always be physical for as long as I can.

I must admit though, this is a huge new feature and completely changes what this device is.

We can have zero interest in something but still realize it's value. I'm not buying one of these. I'll wait for a real handheld, but this had the potential to get A LOT of people into gaming at a relatively low price point. I'm sure it is high margin, but they should consider dropping it to 150. You make up for that in PS+ premium subscriptions so easily.

Eh, isn't it still the best-selling gaming accessory?

Always room to sell more. I think at 150/LCD and 200/OLED you get significantly more robust sales.

Is that even possible?

Yeah, it's actually pretty easy actually. Maybe the confusion is around his use of the word "native." You could spin up PS1 and PS2 in pretty much any VM and run them on servers across the globe. You don't need native hardware for either of them.

Mckmaster uses MasterCard to buy Slave drives
Sony needs to release a Portal Pro, OLED with HDR at €350.

If possible for that price 120hz as well.

I'd buy it for $300 LOL!!! And sell my current PS Portal to someone for $100.

I called it. Said this was going to be Sony's handheld push. Was just a no Brainerd.

A $200 PS+ streaming console.

Yep, I was saying the same thing last year and earlier this year. It was so obvious. For $199, it blows my mind how good of a buy this device is now.

I own doom eternal and its on my PS5 and cloud save. I booted it up first time on portal and it didn't ask a thing. It just said continue, new game, load, game, etc.

I hit continue and it picked my cloud save and started me where I left off and all settings.

Yea this works well. Just don't be In a cold spot for your wifi. As long as it has good signal it feels local.

I think most of us knew this day was coming. I posted about it when the portal came out a year ago. It was obvious it was made to do this.

I'm loving this update

So, do the games running through Cloud Streaming run at PS5 Pro quality?
Good luck with that lol but I honestly think an Arcade approach will be the best way to push streaming. By that I mean give us games not yet available on home consoles , basically PlayStation 6 / Xbox Next games before the consoles release.

Running the games on the servers are not free & they also have to compensate the game makers , losing $50 upfront to make it back slowly through PS+ will only work if it's bringing a lot of new people to PlayStation (which isn't much of a problem for PlayStation)

Do you have your PS5 hooked up through Ethernet? For me Remote Play on Portal & even my tablet seems just as good as playing on the TV .

Yep, i do, it wasnt bad its just not as consistent as cloud has been so far and the image quality is much more consistent as well.

Not sure why

That's not quite true. Even if you convince someone to change from PS+ Extra to Premium, you're getting an extra 3 dollars per month. Within the 5th quarter of them having PS+ you'll have equaled out the revenue difference. But that's not the only equation. Getting people who have PS+ Essential to go to premium comes with an 8 dollar a month premium. That equals out in just over 6 months.

The more subscribers you have the better the margin is on your subscription service. Doing everything you can to boost that number is key.

What I'm saying is that's not free money so the return isn't as fast as it appears. In most cases companies lose money on streaming.

Think you're fundamentally missing why that is.

The biggest cost is infrastructure and content. The higher the users the better your margin is even if utility goes up.

I wonder if they will release a set top box. Yeah yeah I know. You can use other ways to stream to but an actual dedicaded device like the pstv would be nice.

This now makes me wonder if we'll ever get another dedicated handheld from Sony again, despite the rumors of one being in development.

The PS Potal is so much in Sony's favor vs dedicated handheld.

Cheaper to produce,
No game optimizations,
No issues of developer support,
No storage problems,
Increase PS+ subscribers,
Etc.

With the only downside of requiring an internet connection, which isnt really an issue in these times.

PS6 may actually turn out to be the last generation before game streaming takes over.

That's the entire issue though. It's why Xbox is struggling due to GP.

Correct, which is why I'm saying reducing the price of the LCD Portal to 150 would be a really good idea once an OLED model is released. It'll generate more subscribers and upgraded subscribers than probably anything else.

Maybe just PS Portal 2 with an HDMI out.

Plus:
OLED
Bluetooth
Native PS1 - PS4 Games 😛
I think that's what's gonna be the next Sony handheld. Possibly play downscaled ps5/ps6 games aswell.

They are probably waiting for the next generational leap like valve is before introducing their first handheld.

I tested it out earlier and it both looked and felt better then streaming from my console somehow.
I think people's network is really hurting the streaming when doing remote play.

If they did somethibg that allowed ps5 to directly stream to portal that might help, assuming your close enough. But that will probably introduce it's own issues.

What’s annoying is I have 1GB down fiber, and I’m in the same room as the router with my PS5 hardwired.

Now we do have a mesh network (2 routers one in the back room and then the living room) which I guess could affect it?

Could be the mesh network. Is the mesh network hardwired or is one of the APs running off Wifi?

Yeah possibly.

I use to use ps cloud streaming alot a while back, it was great when the connection was direct to the router, i setup a mesh network which my ps5 connected through and it made the cloud streaming unplayable. Remote play could be effected similarly.

So the main router for the mesh is hardwired into the modem or whatever (all router functions disabled on the modem from the ISP) and then my PS5 is hardwired into mesh router. There is a second router that’s in the back room that my girlfriend uses an an office/game room since she works from home. She has to have wired internet for her work computer and the mesh have Ethernet ports which helps us keep a huge ass Ethernet cable running through the whole house.

We mainly got the mesh because the default AT&T Fiber router is ass cheeks and because of the aforementioned need.

Yeah possibly.

I’m starting to think it’s the fault of the mesh.

We actually originally had all 3 routers running but when I looked into it the third router was causing my PS5 to have horrid download speeds like 15 down and as soon as I went down to 2 it shot up to 350 which is about the best I can seem to get.

Bugger. Link not working.

Edit: yay works.

So, seemed to be an Android 13 OS issue? Google fixed it.

I said it before... Sony needn't and likely wouldn't ever make a dedicated handheld ever again.

There is just no sense in doing so with the existing PS portal. There are just too many benefits to having something lie this than making a dedicated handheld. As is, limited library and required internet connection aside, PS portal is in effect, the most powerful handheld on the market.

I also feel they will always have a balls-out home console though, as at the end of the day, PS portal is just there to run "some" of the games that is made for the home console.

If anything, its more likely that we see a cloud streaming handheld push from Steam and/or Xbox rather than more companies trying their hand at $400+ handheld devices.

I'm guessing not all games in the catalogue are working?

Just tried DBZ Kakarot and it says it can't start the game. Same with Doom Eternal. Same with Miles Morales.

The one that I did managed to play (Killer Frequency & Daxter) had very noticeably delay input.

I have 1GB / 500 Mb internet, so my network isn't an issue.

The more indie and older games seem to work.

The more recent AAA games, I've yet to be able to test one that works.

Not convinced at all by the beta.

So when PlayStation allows your to stream your game library and PS+ titles, I'll have no reason to own the console

As a matter of fact I'm thinking of going all in now

I think PS5's variable clock rate kinda opens the door for for a portable that can run PS5 games at a lower resolution. Add AI upscaling to the mix & you should have something that's not about to catch fire in your hands lol.

But yeah through the power of streaming we already have a portable PS5 in our hands

1080P looks great on a 8 inch screen. While the console can stream 4K.

I've been experimenting with different games. TLOU looks unbelievable. The quality experience is there in both looks and function.

Yeah the main advantage with a handheld streaming device(aside from the cost) is that it is essentially compatibility agnostic and doesn't have to rely on developer support. So it can just keep interfacing with newer and newer hardware and those pre-existing libraries. PS5 yup, PS5 Pro yup, PS6 yup.

But everyone that buys the Portal at $150 isn't going to sign up for PlayStation+ Premium .

If they're waiting for a $50 discount they're probably not going to pay for PS+ premium for long

Still haven't managed to try DBZ Kakarot and Doom Eternal, but managed to try out Witcher 3, Ghost of Tsushima, Miles Morales, Kena and Dying Light 2.

Gameplay wise Control felt really good.

There's a very small latency in most games, but they are all perfectly playable and image quality looks good.

This just makes PS Portal a much more interesting device in my opinion.

Anyone know if they will update the Android app to allow this? I feel like that would be too coinvent. If not I may night had to sell my PS5 for finance issues a couple years ago but this would be nice, I don't play a lot of PS games.

What about games built around the SSD?

Not sure why that would matter being that the games are playing from your console.

Edit: I'm mixed up thought I was in the other thread lol

But that shouldn't be a problem because you can also have a fast SSD in a handheld
