I know that. But their projections had it climb to a category 5 somewhere in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico, then drop back down to barely a category 4 when it makes landfall.

If I was in New Orleans when I Katrina hit, and decided not to move out, I would be moving out now.

Yes and no. I have watched hurricanes for over a decade. Whenever a hurricane's strength peaks, it is MOST times far more likely to weaken. So if it hits Cat 5 well before the LA coast it will prob come in as a weak Cat 4, or even less.

But keep in mind, not all hurricanes follow this logic. Gilbert, Hugo, Andrew, ignored it for the most part.

Gustav is following a deep sea warm water current which is whats giving it so much power. they say the water could be as warm as 98 degrees that its following. Lots of power build up fast with that. Hopefully it will lose some of it before it hits

I cannot argue on storm surge, that is true. A hurricane typically carries it with it.

Yes, sorry. Perot basically used mockery to help drive creationism out of public schools in Texas. Interestingly, since Southern schoolbooks are frequently targeted at Texas curricula (because of the raw numbers) the change spread outward from Texas.
