I'm proud you guys put a stop to that smear bullshit. Sometimes people can be real hypocrites when it comes to politics but I'm glad the admins here recognized the problem right away.

THe biggest problem with democracy is that it lets anyone vote.acksman said:I would rather her vote than not, and she gets it, with her belief system and not yours.
See, attacking like that does no good other than drive people off and not partake in the this great democratic system we have. If we drive everyone off and no one votes, we may lose more rights than you wish.

That's the thing - it's the good thing as well as bad thing for democracy.acksman said:I think about it quite a bit, what do you think is the correct answer if we only let certain people vote and how do we decide it?

Juice said:Hmm, thinking about improving the democracy, I'd probably start by introducing range voting with a run-off election that intermingled candidates from both parties.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Range_voting
If there were any reasonable way to come up with a system to introduce a civics exam (a la Chinese meritocracy) as a prerequisite to voting (or offering a double or triple vote to those with particularly high aptitudes), we'd probably be better off in the short and long term.

Juice said:Well, to a Christian individual who either drinks the Kool-Aid or actually reads the scriptures, it's easy to make the case that human life begins at (or in some cases, pre-) conception. If 'God knit you in your mother's womb', then to cancel that process out on your own at any time would and has been construed to be counter to God's will, selfish, sinful, etc. etc.
Racists, sexists, etc. kind of throw your "belief system, America fuck yeah!" argument out the window. But as Frag said, a necessary evil.acksman said:I think about it quite a bit, what do you think is the correct answer if we only let certain people vote and how do we decide it?

Byakuya769 said:Though the argument could be made that being omnipotent and ever present God knows you because you existed. (past present future.. means little to a being who knows it all before it plays out). So he knew me when he created me in the womb, simply because I exist now.
However, perhaps those aborted fetuses are never known. Think the issue has be oversimplified, even theologically.
Juice said:It's a valid line of reasoning, and I've tried it on Christians before, but it's never gotten the slightest bit of traction. The largest barrier to conceiving (har) the idea is that God didn't "knit you" in the womb for fun, he did it because he needs to because we're so complicated and there's no way a bunch of goop in a vagina would figure out how to form itself into baby parts on its own.
Therefore, if aborting a baby results in a fetus that looks like a bunch of baby parts, that means God did some knitting, and you done gone unknit it.

In the GAF-sphere, if you see statements like mine, you can either think I'm serious or I'm being sarcastic. Take your pick.

I don't often quote Dennis Miller, but:Fragamemnon said:Regarding that Pledge/Founding Fathers thing-earlier in this thread I mentioned that she was going to have a debate performance even worse than that of Admiral Stockdale in '92-I still stand behind that, because he just isn't a very smart person.
"Now I know (Stockdale's name has) become a buzzword in this culture for doddering old man, but let's look at the record, folks. The guy was the first guy in and the last guy out of Vietnam, a war that many Americans, including our present President, did not want to dirty their hands with. The reason he had to turn his hearing aid on at that debate is because those fucking animals knocked his eardrums out when he wouldn't spill his guts. He teaches philosophy at Stanford University, he's a brilliant, sensitive, courageous man. And yet he committed the one unpardonable sin in our culture: he was bad on television."
