Polygon - Nintendo confirms you will have to pay to use the Switch 2’s C button

"Nintendo has made its own Discord-like chat app for the Switch 2, and it’s going to charge you for it. Once the free period is over on March 31, 2026, GameChat, and the C button that activates it, will require a Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) membership."

"But unless you have an active NSO membership, you’ll have a whole button dedicated to nothing on your Switch 2. It doesn’t even sound like you can remap it to something else. It will just be a reminder of the $19.99 you may or may not be handing to Nintendo every year."

It should be usable regardless of a subscription, obviously online features would be from a paid online service but uhh... wtf nintendo? Let people have fun with it.

Polygon speculates here, I'm pretty sure the trial period until next year is to figure out what to do with the button if not used for chat, not leaving it unused

I think people are taking their eye off the real problem and falling for clickbait. PS has a share button as well. You can technically use it for captures still, but it's kind of pointless without their sub.

The issue isn't the system price. The issue really isn't the controller having an "online" button. The issue is software pricing.

1) Raising the price of software
2) Sub only BC games

Every bit of news about the Nintendo Switch 2 scares me.

It's going to be the new Wii-U if it continues like this.

I mean that was a given, this isn't news if you watched the direct. They made it clear this was a chat button that navigates users to the chat system and that after the trial period you'll need a subscription to use it.

All we're going to see here are people whining about how shit they believe this generation of Nintendo is going to be, much like every other Switch 2 thread.

Cause it's new and they don't know how to handle it. Like they had a long trial period for the online, after 18 months they came up with what they gonna offer, how it's gonna work.
Figuring out how to remap a button does not require a user trial. This is the sort of stuff engineers and marketers should think about when they are designing the machine and its value proposition.

Well that's kind of shit. I didn't expect the voice chat to be free but I thought you might be able to send voice messages or something. Not that I would use it.

We've known this since the Direct. Nintendo stated outright that video chat would require an NSO subscription after the trial period ended. Polygon is just engagement farming, as usual.

Fucking dumb decision. Like when a keyboard or a controller has a dedicated subscription button. That said Nintendo Switch Online is worth the cost.

I mean who thought this would be free? Surely kept behind their subscription.
The button thing is dumb if thats what the outrage is. lol

Unfortunate that the voice chat isn't available for free, even if it disabled the video sharing, as playstation and xbox both don't need a subcription for party chat.
