Hey all, going to be getting my first tattoo soon. It's an excerpt from the Russian novel, "Roadside Picnic". I have the English translation and a friend who knows Russian well enough to converse. The phrase I'm getting is bolded (posting whole thing because it's AWESOME):
I'd like to get it in the original Russian, but so far the closest I've found (short of buying a Russian version of the book) is, oddly enough, a statue in Russia with this very phrase on it (click for super large):
I'd LIKE to get the entire quote and incorporate it into some sort of design, but barring that, then definitely "HAPPINESS FOR EVERYBODY, FREE, AND NO ONE WILL GO AWAY UNSATISFIED!". My question is, does anyone know of any good resources for Russian typography/fonts? Really not sure where to even start looking or how to look for this. Thanks for any help!

It is a reference to a Samson's riddle: "Out of the eater came forth meat, and out of the strong came forth sweetness."
I am not a religious person, but the riddle and legend of Samson killing the lion and bees making honey in the lion's skull is one that combines multiple pieces of imagery I had long considered for a tattoo. The lion for my Zodiac sign, the skull for my interest in animal physiology, bees as a symbol for renewal in alchemy and white magic. And most importantly, I just thought it would look cool and I knew Jason would design something really amazing, ha ha.
Taking a break till fall then I'm doing a forearm sleeve.

Anyone have a good link to a tattoo FAQ? Was talking with a friend and he said not to get a tattoo if you tanned recently...? Any other little things I should know for pre and post care?

Some rules of thumb for post care:
- Keep contact (with anything) to a minimum on the area where the tattoo is
- Always keep the tattoo moisturized with a moderate (not too thin but not too thick) lotion, but...
- Only dab the moisturizer on; never rub or smear it
- Same goes for soap: lightly dab suds on and gently rinse with warm water
- KEEP IT OUT OF SUNLIGHT
- DO NOT SCRATCH IT

A small amount of Aquaphor over the surface area as it heals works wonders. I had never used it until my most latest tattoo but the artist recommended it to me as part of the aftercare regimen, and it definitely helps. A little goes a long way though, you want avoid smothering the tattoo.

Done on my right chest. Hurt like hell.

This one I got done for my mom. I got it done for free a couple years back.

To add to the after are discussion I've heard so much, but my parlour recommends to keep the cling film on for about 3 hours, wash it with antibacterial soap/scent free, then use a light layer of bepathen (Nappy rash barrier) and loosely wrap with more fresh cling film, twice a day for three days

Ok tattoo-gaf, I need advice. All of my tattoos are for people. Puzzle pieces for my autistic sister, triple 7s on my arm for my aunt who died (loved the casino), bluejay with a small rose in it's mouth for my grandparents (grandfather loved bluejays, grandmother loved roses) but I need ideas for my next piece.
My mom really likes my tattoos, and said she'd be honored if I got one based around her. Obviously I was going to get something later down the line in honor of her, but I don't mind jumping the gun and getting something this summer.
Here's some things...my mom, like my grandmother, LOVES roses. She is also diabetic and has fibromyalgia. The symbols for diabetes are a blue circle, grey ribbon with a blood drip and the symbols for fibromyalgia are a purple ribbon and purple butterfly.
So I wouldn't mind creating a quarter sleeve out of all this, but I'm really lost on design. It's going to be difficult to get a rose, butterfly to not look feminine.
So right now I'm just looking for ideas on this piece. It's in it's really early stages.

Your best bet is to find a good shop and get an artist there to draw it up for you. They'll take an outline of your arm and see how much space they have to work with and will then come up with something based on your description.

There are so many different theories on tattoo aftercare, the gist is that the body is a pretty fantastic organism and is pretty good at healing itself. I've seen great results from people that scratch the crap out of their tattoos and put no lotion or anything on them, then some people pamper them to death and they look good too.
I personally keep the wrap on there for a couple hours after the tattoo, then I wash it off in the bathtub with warm water and gold Dial soap. Something unscented is what you want. When I got my rib piece done it was hurting so bad that I actually soaked it in a bathtub for about 10 minutes or so the first night. Different opinions on that too, but as you can see below it healed up pretty well. I wouldn't do it after the first day, I know that. So after the first day I've been drying mine out lately for a few days by not putting anything on it and taking a shower twice a day and washing it with unscented soap, and then wrapping it at night so I don't get plasma all over the sheets. After 3 days are up I start putting unscented lotion on it for a while.
Here's a couple of mine.
Father's day piece on my forearm from last year that I got for my daughter. There are 5 hearts in it, in case you didn't notice. Just something my artist through in there.
This is a pinup for my wife.. Yeah, ribs suck, hard. Stomach sucks pretty bad too.

I could honestly get my arms tattooed for probably 6 hours, rather than getting my ribs done for 1 1/2 or 2. Thankfully that rib piece only took my artist 2 hours because he's freaking fast. He's also got a hand like a sledgehammer so it hurts worse. But I'll take the increased pain + shorter time overall.

I sort of want to get a tattoo, but I don't know what I want to get and I don't want to get something unless it has a meaning behind it. My fiancee has been bugging me about getting one; she has eight. I told her I might just get the image used for my avatar and put it on my ass or something, but that goes against my whole, "I want it to have meaning," thing.
