Project M Demo: Smash Bros. Brawl with Melee Gameplay! [Update: Out Now]

Is there any way to enjoy the tweaks made by Project M without the removal of all the stuff that was taken out (like characters, stages, and the ability to use custom stages)?

The characters weren't like deleted off the disc. They have just been removed from the character select and thus you can't pick them. If you play classic mode you will notice they still pop up as enemies and allies and perform just fine. Adding them back isn't too tough if you know how to modify the character select. Just note that they will be like the vanilla versions of the characters instead of with the Project M physics. You may want to do this anyways if you want to mod in PSAs over characters that aren't currently on the select screen or something.

Just wanted to add that not only will they be vBrawl, but they also won't have the necessary coding to work with a bunch of very key gameplay change codes (such as L-canceling, the air dodging mechanics, etc.) and would likely have chances of freezing/glitching out anyway or otherwise be completely unplayable/imbalanced compared to the rest of the cast.

Come on guys, the reason we're not putting in these characters isn't just because we're not done with them (though that is a primary reason), but it's also because if we did they wouldn't be balanced with the rest of the cast (which isn't very conducive to competitive play and tournaments, being able to pick characters we haven't changed could throw off the feedback we care about), would be buggy with our codes, etc.

The final version will have every character completed.

Thanks for working on Project M, I'm having a lot of fun with it. That being said you shouldn't take too much offense for people wanting to access the entire roster anyways be it to actually play the vanilla incarnations or mod those characters in other ways. Like it or not most people that use this mode are just flat out not going to be using it competitively. While I am sure some will run tournaments for this it is still a mod and its primary use is going to be just for fun. That isn't meant to undermine your work though, it is still great. Aspiring to balance it for competition is a good idea but you have to acknowledge that isn't going to be its primary use.

Played this some more last night, with more players this time. Yep, it's still awesome. I was fooling around with Lucario a bit and he has some very cool mechanics (which I actually read up on before playing this time, I thought the glowing hands were a graphical bug at first). The "super bar" idea is very well implemented considering the constraints that had to be worked around in this kind of game/engine.

The Project M mechanics definitely hold up even with 4 players. Everyone was enjoying themselves, dare I say, more than when we used to play vanilla Brawl. (I hate to make the comparison but there's really no way not to.) I probably already said this, but still, I'm really looking forward to seeing what the team does with the rest of the cast.

I'm really enjoying this, though the game froze on me yesterday when I was playing with a friend. He was playing as ROB and broke a Smash Ball. As soon as he pressed B to activate it, the game froze.

Also, will the final game give Smash attacks to Charizard, Squirtle, and Ivysaur? Currently, when Charizard breaks a Smash ball, nothing happens.

I just want to echo that the game froze for me when trying to activate ROB's final smash as well. I also noticed a freeze when Wario's Bite move hits Captain Falcon.

That's exactly what I want. I like the changes made to the modded characters (especially Sonic), but I also want to use them alongside the rest of the vanilla game until the final version is released.

I am curious if anyone think Ike can be little too strong. I was surprised that he could take characters out at 40-50%. Do random usually would pick Mario out of all characters for like 80-85% times. for yall?

Yeah, my circle of friends have found Ike's side B to be godly.

Also, Pit is now completely worthless. None of us will even touch him.

I'm away from home until thursday so hopefully someone else can help you out. If not I'll whip something up for you late next week.

Yeah I agree. I replaced my pit with waluigi.

So what's the word on a PAL compatible version right now? Are we just shit out of luck?

edit: nvm I just saw the discussion on this page. hmm when it's finished? Since the PAL version is using different codes or whatever, I suppose that means they'll have to make a new one from scratch for PAL. Probably never gonna happen then.

nvmd i put my wii sideways and it worked, lol

i consider myself a intermediate-advance smash player, i cant tell much diff except the game feels slightly faster, but that;s probably placebo from reading online remarks and i havent played ssbb in like 2/3 years

the game still looks amazing, and this is coming from a guy playing wii games at 1080p 60fps

did you go to the stage builder menu in order to initiate the the mod on an unmodded Wii?

EDIT: Also, for anyone who DLed the mod combo so far (30+ it seems) I will be reuploading it with a fix to a mismatched level loading issue where SSB64 Intro loads Metal Caverns, 64 Hyrule Castle loads Temple:M. This happened because I forgot that P:M has custom melee stages that have overwritten some of the Stages from the STage Expansion mod.

I will be switching the Melee Hyrule Temple over to Temple:M. And I will include both files in case some of you would like to switch between them, with instructions hopefully.

The version I will be uploading will be for unmodded Wii's... but you can load it into CFGUSB-Loader by moving the file inside the codes directory into the codes directory inside of cfg-usbloader's folder.

Hmm... It don't work for me

I fixed it to work for Non-modded wii's, try v2 below (make sure you delete anything left from the old one):

Download Link: Project M + SM64/Melee Stage Expansion V2 162MB (compressed) @ mediafire
  • If you use CFG-USB Loader, just put the .gct file from the "codes" directory into CFG-USB Loader's "codes" directory.
  • I also fixed it so the original brawl stages are back in and the correct stages are loaded when they are selected.
  • Instructions for using Original Melee Hyrule Temple instead of Temple:M are included.
  • Instructions for upgrading/swapping out custom Stages on the Melee/64 Stage Select Page are included.
Let me know if you encounter any bugs aside from these three:

  • The Melee Stage page has 4 stages that will freeze your game if they are selected: Icicle Mountain, Pokefloats, Brinstar Depths, Mute City. (they are shown but not used because the Brawl Modding community hasn't completed them yet).
  • Trying to edit the Melee Stage Page Music in "My Music" will freeze t your game (not like you need to, since the imported stages have their appropriate music imported as well).
  • Backing out to the Title Menu wil freeze the game.
Everything else should be fine... Nostalgia Trip, Ahoy! v2!

fixed, and updated with instructions to add in stages and swap between Temple:M and Original Melee Hyrule Temple.

let me know how it runs for ya.

So far it loaded just fine, but stupid me. I picked pokefloat out of excitement without realizing that it don't work.

Edited: Thanks. It worked.

Thanks, Cuban Legend, for taking the time to do this and share it. I haven't gotten a chance to try it yet, but I'm very much looking forward to it. I hope you'll be willing to update it once the full version of Project M comes out!

Thanks man, I'll give this a shot a bit later.

I had to play an hour of vanilla Brawl today because some of my friends were desperate to play Kirby. Wow at the difference. Snake and Ganondorf feel so sluggish and eh :/.

I completely forgot about kirby, wow. and samus, and probably some others, been playing strictly P:M since Demo 2's release.

So I want to do this but Im not fully sure how it works.

I understand the custom stages must be deleted, not an issue...

...but how does using this affect all the saved data like stats and stuff?

Does it over-right that? Or does it in effect create two versions? IE If I load brawl I get my stats, and when I load M I get a new set of stats?

Stats carry over between them.

I downloaded this and replaced the codes file with the wi-fi and non-wifi codes from the Project M page. It's not showing all the stages, the Melee/64 page only has a few of them. o.o

That's probably because your switched the code files, I custom binded two .gct code files to make the one i have in the stage expansion+PM Mod... why use wifi codes anyway when you wont be able to sync stages in Multiplayer due to the new Stage Expansion mod?

Switch back to the original files in the download and you should be alright, I've tested this in both modded and unmodded formats and it works as intended. Regardless, please report back if you get it to work or not. :)

So even if you and your friend have the stage expansion mod, you can't make it work on wi-fi? So it's local only? I see then.

Oh i see what you mean, you want to play it on wifi?

Well if you want to do that then I'll have to make a code that is for the wifi version, you should've just said so. :)

I'll get on it when I get home from work today.

Edit: Here it is, use the wifi-safe version, you can switch back to non-wifi by replacing the code file, and vice-versa.

Played for a few hours over the weekend. Went back to play vanilla Brawl and my God, it was nigh unplayable. So damn floaty and sluggish.

At the same time, I did miss a few of the characters, but it will be interesting to keep tabs on this mod.

Also nice to see Capt. Falcon flying around with his knee out all over the place again.

Any chance we can get the new patch updated with the stage extension thing again Cuban Legend? Or will that codes.gct thing from the first expansion download in the fusion program work here too?

It likely will not work as there's a bunch of new codes in Demo 2.1 that fix some things up. He would have to remake it with the new demo 2.1 file.

As long as the new codes don't interfere with the stage extension codes, joining the 2 gct files shouldn't be a problem. I'll get on it this weekend.

The only thing I'd have to do is replace the Stage extension's Fourside/Dreamland 64 with the P:M versions, while also keeping P:M's Green Hill Zone/Dracula's Castle on the first page. The First page P:M Stages might load but you might not see their custom menu logo, Only so much I can do with file swapping and code merging.

Project M is like a brand new game now, isn't it?

It tweaks a very great deal of stuff, and replaces official stages with some fanmade ones, but most people won't tell the difference. It's more for Melee enthusiasts that love the faster gameplay. Can't wait for the final version.

Hey guys! It's been awhile. This thread needs some bumping because...there's some new news!

First of all, Project M Demo 2.5 has been announced (Trailer here)

This new update isn't a small sized patch like 2.1 was. This update will include new characters (well, characters re-added to the roster), engine fixes, bug fixes, and balance adjustments across the entire cast of released characters. There is no ETA for the release date but stay tuned for that!

Secondly, a new character has been announced! It's Ivysaur, making her return with a slew of new aspects and two new moves! (Reveal trailer here)

There will be more announcements in the coming weeks, leading up to when the new demo is released. Stay tuned for more news!

Also, if you want to see how Ivysaur plays, you can check out a recorded livestream of her from yesterday that has quite a lot of matches of her.

Anyway... get hyped! (I wish I had control over the OP, since Anth0ny mysteriously got banned :<).

Note: Before anyone asks why I'm addressing Ivy as a "she" is because in the Japanese release Ivysaur's voice is distinctly female. Smash needs more females so I recognize Ivy as a female. :p

There should be another live stream coming up tomorrow night, I'll probably link it when it's up. More Ivy action and general 2.5 previewness.
