Project M Demo: Smash Bros. Brawl with Melee Gameplay! [Update: Out Now]

Man, I expected this thread to move a lot faster. All my pro melee friends are currently playing it non-stop this weekend. (they recently held a Melee tournament a couple weeks ago, and M2K was here, yadda yadda). Hopefully when all the characters are done and we have an OT we'll get more discussion and excitement going.

Not much can really be done, haha. Pretty awesome to hear though that your Melee friends are playing it a lot! The best thing anyone can do for us right now is to have side events for PM at Melee tourneys or something. And of course video footage! :)

Videos would help spread the word, as would word of mouth! (But IGN sort of did that for us a bit, we've had a hectic few days because of their coverage).

Perhaps I'm just an idiot but I haven't been able to get this to run right yet. Do I have to delete ALL of my save data, in addition to the stages data? I don't know if I can part with all of my data...

Yes it's a shame. I think all it'll take is one big tournament to get a lot more people to try it out.

They were talking about getting a capture device for general gaming reporting and recording, so at least in my social circle, I can see that coming down the pipeline.

I'm dreadfully awful at Melee, but they are some of the best players around.

Hmm, odd. I'll try it again later today

Additionally, make sure to use the installer! Also, be sure you pick hackless (it's not the first option). And make sure you have the Nintendo specific custom stages deleted as well (the ones they send you and/or any default ones). Wii console AND SD Card, to be perfectly clear.

M2K is ok, I'm currently running his 64/Melee Stage Expansion Pack in Project M with no problems. :D

I was even able to merge both gct files from the Stage Expander pack and Project M, into one single file without any issues! So i keep the physics and things of PM but have all the old stages from 64/Melee in the Melee Stage Selection Screen:

It now looks like it did in melee, like this:

If anyone wants the files you can drop into your SD card, PM me. They work fine with CFGUSB Loader when you enable Ocarina Cheats.

I'd love the files, but to activate it all can I just start it up like I do Project M in the stage builder stage, or do I have to download any additional homebrew software or whatever onto my Wii to get this to work? Thanks.

Um, by M2K, he means Mew2king (the competitive Smasher). Not... Mewtwo2000 (the stage maker) LOL.

Mewtwo2000 is commonly written as M22K to cause less confusion.

Oh man, even I was confused by his reply. Not to mention that website was all kinds of borked. Thanks for clearing that up (for the both of us).

Yes the files should work just fine with stage builder mod as well.

2 Bugs:
-The Melee Stage page has 4 stages that are shown but not used ( because the community hasn't completed them yet, if you click on them your game will freeze). Icicle Mountain, Pokefloats, Brinstar Depths, Mute City.
-Also trying to edit the Melee Stage Page Music in "My Music" will freeze the wii as well (not like you need to, since the imported stages have their appropriate music imported as well),

Everything else is fine... Nostalgia Trip, Ahoy!

The files are 313MB, where can i Upload them to?

Asked in the chatroom and they said a PAL version is going to get made once the original Project M is completely finished and made. Soooo any guesses on when that's going to be? D:

When it's done. Expect it to be called Project M Forever.

Kidding, but they don't have any sort of timeline as far I know. Just whenever it's ready, you don't rush greatness. You can probably bank on before Smash 4 though.

You could try this:
http://www.filefactory.com/u/local

Or you could upload two different parts on http://www.sendspace.com

:)

I've heard maybe within 6 months ~ the end of the year, but no promises.

This is the most fun with Smash I've had in 5 years.

I had a heated series of fights with a friend over the weekend. So much fun, so tense!

I haven't played the first Project M demo in months but I feel like I'm having a harder time running and picking up an item now. My friends and I were playing it over the weekend and we were all turned off by the loss of momentum.

So will the Hackless version work with cards greater than 2GB? I went out tonight and couldn't find one less than 8GB and picked that up.

But I'll keep at it though!

No, Hackless will not work with cards greater than 2 GB. The reason is because Brawl doesn't recognize SD Cards bigger than 2 GB because it was released before the Wii got the 4.0 update which allowed it to recognize those cards. And since Nintendo can't patch Wii games, Brawl was left in the dust in regards to this functionality.

Hope you find a 2 GB one soon though.

That makes sense, hm. Will pick one up off of Amazon Prime then, thanks

Played a bit yesterday with Wario. Man, he's leagues more interesting to play as than in Brawl. I had some mad trouble with faster characters and definitely Marth, but I suck.

Down air + down air + fart is so awesome. Like he's trying to slam out that fart and it finally comes out. Sweet release.

You're probably not used to 0 buffer. Turn on Buffer in the options and put it at 100% (100% = 10 frames, Brawl's default).

Otherwise, if you didn't have that trouble with Demo 1 I'm not sure... what could be the problem. Nothing much was changed as far as sensitivity goes from Demo 1 to Demo 2.

What's even awesomer is he has an easter egg like Falcon does with his knee with the taunt button except for Wario it's his Dair. Without spoiling anything, you should certainly attempt to check it out. ;)

I noticed Luigi's down tilt makes a funky noise when it lands. My friends and I found that pretty funny since it's considered one of the worst attacks.

It has been awhile so I could have easily just gotten used to regular Brawl in between the demos. I'll definitely try the Buffer option though.

Got a chance to try this today with one of my buddies. The game felt a lot better to play (a lot more like Melee). Being able to do short combos again was awesome, and it felt a little bit faster/more responsive overall. Capt. Falcon in particular was pretty much back to his old self for me, which was really awesome to see.

We noticed a few bugs while playing too. When I got some of the spicy curry as Ness, I lost control of my character, and when my friend knocked me off, the death animation played but I didn't lose a life or respawn. He had to suicide to end it and it showed Ness as the winner! Another bug we found was Fox performing Foxfire (up+B) while slowed down from the clock power-up. He flew from one side of the screen all the way to the other side to his death. Is there anywhere we can report these?

Overall it was pretty damn awesome. I'm just waiting to get a few more friends in on this and trying out some big ol' 4 player free-for-alls like in the old days. :)

Bugs with the items are known. Right now the devs are focusing in itemless balance, when they finish that, they will fix everything else.

Ah, I see. No complaints there.

Man... this really is putting Smash back on the radar for me. Brawl never seemed to have the ridiculous staying power that Melee had, but now that may change.

Been playing this for a while now and its a ton of fun. Ness actually being really good (for once) makes me all kinds of happy.

I've mostly been messing around by playing CPUs, but I get a good game in when I play against my bro.

Does this have PM's skin/color scheme?

Also I'm salty. Bought a new GCN controller because my Wavebird just started to show its age... and it turns out the damn thing's busted right out of the box. smh

yes it should contain all of PM's skin/color schemes. The stage expander shouldn't edit anything but the stages in the melee stage selection page.

Can anyone let me know if it has worked for them?

@Revven: From what I understand, you're one of Project M's developers, right? Me and my friends had a go at both demos and we're having a blast! It's obvious there's been much effort and love put into this, so thank you very much.

I just tried it (copy pasted the files on the root of my SD card) and it didn't seem to work on my unmodded Wii.

did you go to the stage builder menu in order to initiate the the mod on an unmodded Wii?

EDIT: Also, for anyone who DLed the mod combo so far (30+ it seems) I will be reuploading it with a fix to a mismatched level loading issue where SSB64 Intro loads Metal Caverns, 64 Hyrule Castle loads Temple:M. This happened because I forgot that P:M has custom melee stages that have overwritten some of the Stages from the STage Expansion mod.

I will be switching the Melee Hyrule Temple over to Temple:M. And I will include both files in case some of you would like to switch between them, with instructions hopefully.

The version I will be uploading will be for unmodded Wii's... but you can load it into CFGUSB-Loader by moving the file inside the codes directory into the codes directory inside of cfg-usbloader's folder.

Is there any way to enjoy the tweaks made by Project M without the removal of all the stuff that was taken out (like characters, stages, and the ability to use custom stages)?

IntelliHeath

As in "Heathcliff"
I am curious if anyone think Ike can be little too strong. I was surprised that he could take characters out at 40-50%. Do random usually would pick Mario out of all characters for like 80-85% times. for yall?

I don't know about custom stages, but regarding characters, if they're not in, it means they're not done. So if you were to put the missing ones back in, they would be as they are in vBrawl, and you wouldn't really be enjoying anything.

IntelliHeath, Random defaults to Mario where it would select a character that isn't part of the demo's roster.

Just wanted to add that not only will they be vBrawl, but they also won't have the necessary coding to work with a bunch of very key gameplay change codes (such as L-canceling, the air dodging mechanics, etc.) and would likely have chances of freezing/glitching out anyway or otherwise be completely unplayable/imbalanced compared to the rest of the cast.

Come on guys, the reason we're not putting in these characters isn't just because we're not done with them (though that is a primary reason), but it's also because if we did they wouldn't be balanced with the rest of the cast (which isn't very conducive to competitive play and tournaments, being able to pick characters we haven't changed could throw off the feedback we care about), would be buggy with our codes, etc.

The final version will have every character completed.

Additionally, if you're on an unmodded Wii, custom stages are disabled because if you entered the stage select screen (without them disabled) the game will just freeze every time. There's no way to fix that for what I hope are obvious reasons (because it's not like... the mod launches from Stage Builder or anything and... such). So they have to be disabled, at least for that particular method.

Yes, I'm a dev. And you're very welcome! :)
