Makes you wonder why they waited 10 years to announce 160 millions then. Are you trolling?
Your article is January 4th 2013, they couldn't sell 5M from March 2012?

Yeah, can't think why. Not like it's the 30th anniversary of PlayStation or anything significant like that.Makes you wonder why they waited 10 years to announce 160 millions then.
though I think the BC aspect was more attractive
The system being relatively more available also doesn't tell the whole story. There was an influx of people looking for systems to pass the time casually with, the PS4 and Xbox One were also viable choices. I think Nintendo won with the fact that it was cheaper than every other offering, coupled with its library and wholesome reputation . The amount of people that were looking for a PS5 /series x and got a switch instead do not make up the bulk of those pandemic figures. It also had an incredible boost for 2 years since it was the only console widely available during the biggest pandemic that has ever existed since consoles are made and the world population was sitting around at home. People never mention that. The console would be nowhere near these numbers nor would it have peaked at 30M consoles sold in a single year if not for covid.
If PS2 has the "It plays DVDs" excuse, then we should also do this for both sides. Both had huge boosts when they were peaking for different reasons. Animal Crossing was arguably the game of the pandemic tbh.
wait until he hears that people bought more than one SwitchThat's going to be the case for any console. Are you going to suggest Xbox or Switch sales numbers are actually less than reported as well?
Seriously. Some brain leak takes in here.Yeah, can't think why. Not like it's the 30th anniversary of PlayStation or anything significant like that.
No Sega killed themselves by making all sorts of bad decisions and losing money. Idk why they didn't make the Dreamcast profitable from the start. Changing the price to $199 instead of keeping the original price of $299 was a big mistake.
RMA, Demo units for stores, conventions, expos... 160 million sold when 160.6 million were produced... bullshit
they are scared Nintendo will overtake them.
watch them release a mini ps2 and boost those numbers again when Nintendo is getting closer.
just like avatar re-released in the cinema, when endgame took over. lmao
That's made not sold. I owned two PS2's, I'm not doubting it was popular but Sony are claiming that 160+ million were sold, that picture if it is proof says 160.6 million were made, and that's why it doesn't make sense. Things like the yellow light issue that PS2's had would have led to lots of replacements but those 2 numbers can't account for them.
Every time I drop by this site there's always posts like this that make me regret it. Many clowns in this thread. So they sold 5 millions after ending production. That's still amazing. Well done Sony
They're buying every piece of hardware ever produced still out there to improve the total number, but Switch is going to surpass that anyway at this point. Is over, rest now.
Could be worse, could be on a piano. One slip and it's dead.Last ever PS2 console produced and whoever has it has it on a 3D printed stand.
That's true to an extent, but of all the platforms released the PS2 is the one least impacted by its successor.Switch had a way longer life with no successor, if PS2 had this luxury it would definitely sell more.
PS2 had only 6/5 years (released 2001 in Europe, RotW) before being replaced by PS3 in 2006
Both Sony and Nintendo went from two pillars to one and both saw their profits rise. Yes that absolutely counts as a victory.Dunno why Ninty fans are so obsessed with Switch overtaking PS2. Yeah after losing their stranglehold in the handheld market by discontinuing the DS/3DS and going one pillar not to mention having their marketshare and profits shrunk is it really a victory? Thank God Steam Deck and Asus ROG are out bc I sure as hell don't want the Switch's success to initiate a trend of underpowered hardware with joycon drifts and half-assed ports with crappy framerates.
Because in 2012 Sony combined their console and portable hardware numbers.Makes you wonder why they waited 10 years to announce 160 millions then.
This is like Jake Paul declaring a win over old has-been Mike Tyson. Congrats? You beat up a senior citizen, or in PS2s case, a long dead system that's not even competing anymore.A lot of butthurt fanboys in here being salty about the numbers.
Don't worry, the Switch will still overtake it before they stop production.
Yeah but the handheld market wasn't really that important to Sony like it was to Nintendo. They had a clear monopoly in that market before it got shut down. Both Sony and Nintendo went from two pillars to one and both saw their profits rise. Yes that absolutely counts as a victory.
In the 2010s/2020s, it is no longer feasible for a publisher to support two seperate software ecosystems like in the 90s and 00s.Yeah but the handheld market wasn't really that important to Sony like it was to Nintendo. They had a clear monopoly in that market before it got shut down.
The thing was, by shutting down the DS/3DS production line, they have made the massive library of handheld games esp from the GBA era inaccessible to fans, esp retro enthusiasts who now have to resort to either emulation or buying out of print titles online at scalped prices. A good article on why this was a big deal.In the 2010s/2020s, it is no longer feasible for a publisher to support two seperate software ecosystems like in the 90s and 00s.
It didn't make sense any more for Nintendo to make one product for the Wii audience and a seperate one for the DS/3DS audience.
Instead they could make one product that targets both audiences.
That's been the more profitable move and they didn't have to shut down anything.
From an emulation perspective, I can see why someone would wish Nintendo still produced the Wii U and 3DS.The thing was, by shutting down the DS/3DS production line, they have made the massive library of handheld games esp from the GBA era inaccessible to fans, esp retro enthusiasts who now have to resort to either emulation or buying out of print titles online at scalped prices. Why is it a victory if Nintendo makes a profit? Serious question.I don't think it makes any sense to say that the Switch profits aren't a victory because Nintendo don't make the Wii U and 3DS anymore.
Because that's the goal of the business. Why is it a victory if Nintendo makes a profit? Serious question.
It took them this long to figure out how many they sold and it’s still a generic “over” x number so if any other console gets close to it we’ll never know for sure which one sold more.
Nice.
But victory implies defeating an opponent while undermining their advantage at the same time.Because that's the goal of the business.
Or to flip the question round, why is it not a victory if Nintendo had their profits shrink, as per your original statement?
She's cute.Nintendo fanboys right now
I used to watch that show!
I was mocking the Lyin’ Jim Ryan mantra
But the results of Nintendo releasing the Switch were rising profits, not losing profits. And we know stakeholders didn't take their money elsewhere because the share price is up a lot since the Switch came out.But victory implies defeating an opponent while undermining their advantage at the same time.
It's not a victory bc by losing profits, it concerns their shareholders as well as undermines their ability to take more calculated risks. If investors don't see continued growth, then they take their money elsewhere.
Given our discussion in the past, do you now agree that 160 million is the official number for the PS2?Can’t wait to see the next update in 2025
I'm referring to as of late, when profits fell 60%. Share price has been more or less the same for the past 4 years. When you compare last quarter to last year with the roaring success of the SMB movie and ToTk, it makes it look pretty bad.But the results of Nintendo releasing the Switch were rising profits, not losing profits. Victory was the word you used, but maybe "succes" would be the better term in this case.
It does, but that's just because this is a transition year before the Switch 2. As long as they don't fuck it up, profits should rise again when that comes out.I'm referring to as of late, when profits fell 60%. Share price has been more or less the same for the past 4 years. Unless Sony updates their official information, the PS2 sold to the public 155M not 160M. So the Switch needs 10M to take the crown.
IF Sony for some reason make a million Special Edition PlayStation 2 Fat ( of course ) for Playstation 2 25th anniversary, do you guys thing it would sell out ? and how fast ?
They stopped making ps2s a decade ago.Well yeah, as long as they keep selling PS2s.
