PS2 is one of the biggest-selling video game consoles of all time, with over 160,000,000 consoles sold worldwide since 2000

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
I like how people discussing PS/PS2 just resort to sales to "prove" some contemporary system/game people may love factually sucks but somehow that sales correlation didn't happen when it came time for Wii, that's totally the only time popularity (or lack of) didn't necessarily match merit!!1:pie_eyeroll:

If you two want to believe that in 13 years of production that Sony didn't replace, lose, have damaged in transport, stolen or gave away any more than 636,884 consoles allowing them to sell at least 160,000,001 consoles then that's fine. I'll think the number etched in the picture has to be incorrect if they did sell 160 million.

Somebody pays for it directly or indirectly whether it's lost, stolen, damaged, etc. Whether Sony wants to call it a "sell" well that's a whole other thing.

Last Sony console I owned, those were the good times. I still have all my PS2 game boxes stored away, should start checking for disc rot...

Where have I said otherwise? I want to know the exact total of sold PS2s, that picture claims they produced over 160 million but by such a small amount that it's unlikely they could have sold 160 million. So let's ignore it and go back to my original post.

So you think retailers out there are just sitting on 600k unopened PS2 out in the wild? That make zero sense.

They know the total. It is 160 million.

I buy a PS2, it gets the YLOD, they send me a new one. Sony produced 2 consoles but I only purchased 1 console, apparently they only produced 160.6 million consoles but are claiming they sold 160 million of them.

The likely answer is that, the picture is nonsense and they produced millions more than sold because of all the issues we've mentioned. They can say exactly how many were sold but are choosing not to.

They’re reporting the numbers as everyone else does. Why do you want them to specifically exclude replacement units when no one else does? They’re all on an even playing field. No one counts the numbers sold without replacement units, so requesting Sony to do it is unreasonable.

YLOD was PS3, not PS2.

Just stop.

As I said previously, and as you conveniently left out:

"Whether Sony wants to call it a "sell" well that's a whole other thing."

That's all it is. Nothing more.

got one at launch because my parents wanted a dvd player and it was the best bang for the buck at the time. I had a PS1 but was mostly a Nintendo kid but once I got the PS2 it was curtains.

Although I'm not too fond of the console, it had a kickass library of games. Some of them are still trapped there, begging to be re-released.

Haunting Ground
Ico
Gregory Horror Show
Stunt Racer
Project Zero 2: Crimson Butterfly
Drakengard
Echo Night

And many more. Get on with it. Show the PS2 library some love.

Either way, it is a bullshit argument
I'm not the one who posted a picture claiming they made a mere 600k more than they sold, and that because of the vague "over" qualifier to the 160 million total, it means that possibly they never had a single failure or loss in their entire production pipeline. I said I wanted to know the exact number when some started arguments in their heads and responded to me as if I said what they wanted to reply to.

Re-reading the thread, Daniel Ahmad says 161.8 million might have been sold, which would mean more consoles were sold than manufactured. I don't see any other company managing a trick like that to over take them.

Bought ps2 day 1, but ended up liking the Xbox game lineup more. GameCube and Ps2 were tied for 2nd place for me.

6th gen was the best.

Ahmad's numbers are not official. Sony's are. You don't have to like it, but the official sold number is 160 million.

Legendary console, total phenomenon in the early 2000s.

Also imagine if its successor didn't appear mearly 6 years in its lifespan, its sales would be even greater than 160m

I have a love/hate relationship with the ps2. On the one hand it has an unreal library of all-time classics but on the other it was my primary console when my interest in console gaming started to wane. I never really know what to think about it when I'm asked.

RMA, Demo units for stores, conventions, expos... 160 million sold when 160.6 million were produced... bullshit
they are scared Nintendo will overtake them.
watch them release a mini ps2 and boost those numbers again when Nintendo is getting closer.
just like avatar re-released in the cinema, when endgame took over. lmao

Impressive but its days are numbered. The Switch is almost 8 years old now and still hasn’t seen its first official price drop. I remember paying $149 for my PS2 Slim in 2007. The only way the Switch doesn’t beat it is if Nintendo decides to stop manufacturing them and focus solely on Switch 2.

Don't waste your time. They aren't thick enough to not see that, they just want to troll.

Nonsense. PS2 continued selling after Sony last announced numbers for the console in March 2012. Daniel Ahmad estimated the number to be around 160 million last March based on Sony's prior reporting.

RMA, Demo units for stores, conventions, expos apply to all consoles, not just PS2.

PS2 being around 160 million has nothing to do with the Nintendo or Sony being "scared". It was over 160 million before Switch even existed.

"Nintendo games are like indies, and worth at most $19" 🤡
3rd Developers complained that the EE, GS and the Cell was very complicated but they are actually very good design and architecture that even medical field has use this tech. I hope PS will go back to its own custom designed CPU and GPU, but this time it not be that difficult for 3rd party developers.
Devs like x86-64 but as gamers we just lose, that's why we have more pro consoles and fewer games.
