Seems sus. What happens when I stop subbing to GP but not purchase the standard game?
I did this with Forza horizon 5 as well. Paid $30 and played the game early and got all the dlc. But yeah, if you aren't subscribed you can't play lol. But I have gp till 2025, and at this point, I want to keep it until forever lol. So it's a no brainier for someone like me. Regular price for starfield premium edition is like $100. But if you are a gp sub and think you will stay as one, totally worth it for $31 in my mind

Kind of like buying new tires for a rental car to me. Not going to tell you what to do with you money though. For me, if I'm going to pay cash then I'm going to own the whole thing.
I don't expect to unsubscribe from gp. I expect to always buy on sale and be 3 years ahead. Plus once I beat it, I dont need to go back to it.

And like others have said, you can just buy the game later, digitally or physically, maybe on sale

If that works for you then fine. I am currently unsubscribed from GP and I bought the game for $50 more than you paid for an add-on to a rental. To me, that is a far better deal and I don't have to worry about buying it later. I bought it on sale already from green man gaming.

Yeah I'm mainly doing it for the 5 days early, but yes it comes with everything. Premium edition standalone is like $100. I'll rather pay $31 to get this, and keep gamepass which doesn't just give me starfield but every other game on there.

Story dlc is great, the piddly stuff is usually throw away, only good for early game. Would be nice if it was a usable feature good for the whole game like the canteen item you got in New Vegas. Made the hardcore mode much more manageable.

That seems like the worst of the two deals for me. But that's why options are great lol. I would turn that extra $50 you spent on another 3+ months of gp instead. But this is from someone all in on gp, that I've remained 2-3 years ahead, not a month to month thing for me. I don't really expect to ever buy starfield tbh. I'll just be a subscriber

I did this a few days ago when I decided I was going to want early access. I am prepaid for over two years of Game Pass. I will make a final purchase of the game at some point in the future. I will double dip but I expect a good sale price so my final costs are probably going to be about the same.

I don't understand xbox fans mind. Don't want pay for games but think it is ok to pay $31 for an upgrade to play a game 5 days early you don't own. Wtf
You don't own any games on a walled garden system. At most you own a disk that's worthless without an internet connection, since what's pressed on it is a buggy mess. There's no legal reason either Sony or MS cannot revoke the liscense you purchased at any time for any reason, and there's no reason they cannot disable the liscense handshake even if you are using physical media with a system-level update.

The apocalyptic PR disaster is the only reason they haven't attempted this yet when things get de-listed, but you have no legal leg to stand on if they decided they wanted to burn every ounce of goodwill they had to the ground.

With old Forza games I think if you bought any DLC whilst on Gamepass, you got to keep the whole game when they got delisted (I think)

So that's a strange 'win' for this kind of thing, if you want to justify it to yourselves.

I expect to be playing Starfield for years just like I did Oblivion and Skyrim. Renting just doesn't make sense for games like these to me. 5 months of GP would have paid for the game.

I've completed one game the last year and a half on Game Pass. Thankfully I only used MS Rewards points. Going forward I'm stockpiling my Rewards points and only subscribing to GP in special instances. Just isn't worth permanent subscription, imo. Maybe that will change.

If MS or Sony revoked licenses on purchased content they would have a massive lawsuit on their hands. Don't blindly believe owning digital isn't owning anything. You paid for that license and unless a court of law says otherwise then these companies have to abide. Neither Sony nor MS want that case to ever go to court.

I get it. Just different points of view. I don't ever play games for years. I play and i move on

Bro Sony already revoked the liscense for hundreds of purchased films in Germany and Austria.

Sure there would be a lawsuit if you got a lawyer silly enough to take a case that would be immediately thrown out of court. Every time you blow through the, "I accept the relevant terms and agreements," when you click 'Buy' you agree to a contract that grants you a liscense to use the software that can be revoked at any time for any reason.

If you stop subbing to GP then your premium upgrade is useless until you sub again. Stupid to buy DLC or addons for games tied to a subscription, imo. Just buy it or don't.
I had multiple years of GP stacked up because it was Gold that I got for free from using Bing that converted into GPU for $1, then I continued extending the GPU for free, so I have it till 2025 (longer if I can keep extending for free with MS points). By then the base game will have some kind of deep sale, so I can get early access premium for cheap now and then fill in the base game on a deep sale later before my GPU runs out.

It's already been mentioned, but on Xbox you can buy the Premium Upgrade for $31.50 if you're a GP subscriber, then if you ever decide to unsub you can just buy the game. By that time you'll probably be able to get it on sale, or buy it from a key reseller.

How much is the Xbox Premium Edition running? $100? $95 from a key reseller?

I dunno man, there's part of me that feels like if you're making me pay for access to the game than trying to make me buy DLC for it is quite shit

$99.99

It includes the first story DLC if you get the premium upgrade, or get the premium edition.

I mean, buying the DLC now and later buying the game will still get you access to the DLC content you would lose after unsubbing.

Or, buy the upgrade and play on gamepass now. Then pick up the game on a sale down the line if you let subscription expire.

I'm in no rush. But it's a good option for people who want it early and not looking to make bad analogies.

Yeah but just give it to me, I'm already giving you 15 dollars a month for the privlege of renting it. Why on earth am I giving you more money to access additional content I lose if I stop subscribing?

I'm not sure what you're asking for here. You want all DLC for any game on game pass to be free ? That ain't ever happening. Your $15 a month is giving you that catalog of games. Not any DLC or premium upgrades tied to it.

Not every game, but at least first party.

But it's more like leasing a car (time period) and you have to maintain the tyres when you lease the car. Plus some places you have the option of buying the car cheaper at the end of the deal. Like poster could buy game cheaper in the future. 😉

Feels like many of you think this is just for the early access….
The price is for the future expansion too.

I’m personally not getting the upgrade as I’ll either get the expansion or not when I know what it is, but I can’t see a good reason to hate on people that want to.

You’re buying the expansion for a rented game.
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that and you can rent it indefinitely if you like.
