About all I think I know about this is that it is a spiritual successor to Suikoden.

Is this real time combat or turn based?

Turn based. It's very much Suikoden, except you recuit 120 people instead of 108. The story is okay but not great, and it felt a bit short overall. Absolute nightmare to platinum though.
