Resistance 4 Was Pitched By Insomniac, But Sony Turned It Down

I'll be honest here I loved Fall of Man as an early ps3 game. First time enjoying that shiny HD PS3 era look in a shooter. Also first time playing online shooter games with it's 40 player mode. That was cool.

Resistance 2 I really enjoyed. Thought the graphics and bosses were insane. Especially the ships going over san Francisco bay. I spent an hour just staring at them.

The multiplayer had huge maps and a huge player count. COD4 was out at the time so I didn't play too much.

The online co-op I think was 6 player mission's and everyone working together with different classes. It was kinda like a strike in destiny. That was another fun experience.

Resistance 3 however I just didn't like the story as much and the online was scaled back. I guess I was more invested in Hale and his story.

Was there a strange Resistance 3 apology video by Ted Price?

It looked like a good game but there was negativity around it and same with Killzone games how they weren't as good as COD Battlefield, Halo or whatever. Sony couldn't seem to win with US media and Xbox 360 shooters.

Resistance 1 and 2 were a "we have halo at home" situation and I feel like they sold decent only because the PS3 was struggling with games the first few years. 3 was easily the best of them and the series was finally developing an identity of its own, but it seems like most fans didn't care by that point. There was no way 4 was being released, a sad but inevitable conclusion.

I wonder if a remastered collection would sell now, or most people still don't care other than a nostalgic vocal minority.

Don't blame them. Killzone was always the better fps and Ratchet is better than both. With how long dev cycles are nowadays, why waste +5 years on reviving resistance for the few people that actually liked it?

So, the real Halo-killer was ... Halo itself.

Joke aside, would love to Resistance franchise reboot. Too bad they removed the option of shooting off coolant hoses and the mirror physics in the later games.

I assume most people realize this game would highly likely fall under Sony's live-service catalogue if they would develop a Resistance 4?

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

If Insomniac pitched the project themselves, at the very least it would have had a single player campaign to go with it.

Haze is trash, nothing to talk about it.
Killzone 2 is a masterpiece.
Resistance series was fun. Weapons, enemies, art direction and Nathan Hale's story were cool.

FoM together with MotorStorm were damn good early PS3 titles.
I also played 2 so much, Co-op and MP were fun.

3 had a completely different vibe and the story direction didn't do anything for me.

Live service games don't automatically exclude singleplayer.

No, but the one we all talk about when referencing Sony, Concord, didn't have an SP campaign at all.

So an Insomniac led Resistance 4 with a proper campaign would have been a much better project even just on paper.

What does Concord have to do with it?

The poster child live service game that shaped their current live-service push.

The point is that an Insomniac led game with a proper SP campaign wouldn't be that kind of a failure, even with live service components.

Nobody used it as a poster-child, except for the people who hate it.

Sure, that's why the push against live service 'just because' is retarded.

Especially since a game like R4, with campaign, would likely be part of said live service catalogue.

Remembering back then, trying to get hyped for Resistance brown filter of Man while paying $599 feels weird now. But it was still better than the state of Sony today I guess.

A plethora of Gaf members dumping on a quality franchise like a bunch of filthy casuals, I'm shocked...

The only flaw Resistance had is the story, awesome concept but not handled well. Much like Killzone.

Resistance 1-3 are all still great to play. Retribution on PSP is also a dime, that one is my favorite in terms of story. I never played the one for Vita (I think there's a Vita one?)

Also, Resistance 2 coop was so much fun. Simple in scope but damn fun and the community there were great. Good times and great memories.

Resistance 1-3 existed because Sony needed a FPS franchise on PS3. However, Resistance never hold a candle vs. Halo and Gears of War. With Resistance 3, Insomniac took a victory lap and basically slipped a Half-Life 2 clone under the door. However, the franchise never took off and FPS fans on Playstation were probably looking forward more to more Killzone.

They need to remaster and offer them in Trilogy Collections first. Get people interested in all their PS3 franchises and THEN make the sequel. They have so much IP they can make quick remasters of, even if they dont sell a lot the good will it will create is already enough.

Franchise screwed itself when they forced in R2 to carry only 2 guns approach because it was cool at the time, forgetting what made the 1st so good was the the variety of cool weapons at your disposal to use however the you wanted

Also the ending twist that everyone saw coming a mile away, didn't do much

Third one was good as a separate story, almost new IP if they wanted, a total rollercoaster, but people didn't care much

Also Third Person View would have worked better from the start

In the end Halo killed Halo.
And yet Dead Halo is still better than anything these franchises could put out and still in the top 5 FPS games out there. Infinte and even H5 as a game plays so well, that discounting hero shooters and their various offshoots, id put Infinite's gameplay tied to or just after Titanfall 2.

OT though:

Honestly its good a resistance 4 didnt get made. It would be yet another depressing post apocalyptic simulator that really didn't need a sequel after the last game supposedly stops the chimera invasion. That would basically be Sony's like 6th game with the same kind of narrative but with a different genre at least.
A 4th game retreading the stakes would have honestly been just a waste of time given at the end of R3, its pretty much Capelli that survives from the Sentinels squad.

Also, and this is my opinion, the level design for 3 was dog shit in comparison, and 2 was arguably the best, but still suffering a lot from extremely repetitive sections.

Personally, the story was probably the most fleshed out in 2 and expanded in 3 via collectables (i think) - The main thing that stood out for these games were the weapons. The auger and bullseye definitely still stand up to other game weapons imo. R3 even that mutator weapon that was kinda cool.

Sony did their first person shooters no favours. Too many.

R3, Socom 4, KZ 3 all released within 9 months of each other in 2011. And the Bf3 and MW3 also came out.

2 and Burning Skies did suck big time. 1 and Retribution were good, 3 was great.

Onto the list of most deranged GAF users.
I never finished 2, and never played the Vita game despite being a huge Vita fan.

I’ve thought about going back to 2 on PS5

resistance 2 was better than 1

Can we all agree on that?
I played the early beta of Resistance 2.

The entire beta forum hated the departure the game took away from Quake style arena shooter towards Just Another COD 4 Clone. The multiplayer devs were on my friends list playing COD 4 the entire time between R1 and R2.

Resistance 1 was finally a Sony version of Halo. Today it could have been huge. Instead it chased the latest trend and they ignored feedback. Now we’re talking about its corpse.

I wish killzone trilogy and resistance trilogy and infamous trilogy was all just ported to ps5.
Insomniac is woke and soft. They can't make good games anymore. I am absolutely not excited for anything they do

The first resistance was great. Felt like an old PC shooter at a time when everything was chasing CoD or Halo.
Yea, I'm probably 75% done with FOM and it's solid as can be. Definitely has that PC shooter vibe. Im excited to get to Resistance 2.

Two other great shooters from that gen are Wolfenstein (Raven Software) and Singularity, also Raven. I played through both back in November and thoroughly enjoyed myself.

Sony is afraid to do anything risky, especially with the failure of concord. I would love Resistance 4 but i have known for a long time that it would never happen.
