Riverdale |OT| Teen Peaks (or: Archie's Weirder Mysteries) - Thursday, 9/8c on The CW

Liked seeing Archie take action for once. Need more of that from him.

I think Cheryl did the right thing, metaphorically at least -- there was no other way her and her mom would be able to break away. But ... I didn't see grandma Rose out with them ... Oops.

I'm hoping they kind of make Sabrina like really, really good ... I mean, I have no problems with her releasing evil in the world and causing epic drama, but everyone in the show has so much darkness in them - having someone that just, well, doesn't would be great for the show, I think. I mean, you generate conflict just from that disconnect. Just my two cents.

Good episode. Think I turned away for a little while when Archie was punching the ice. Happy it got a second season. Should be some different dynamics next season, could be interesting.

They knocked it out of the fucking park. Fantastic season.

Nevermind the plot (which was great - engaging to the end) - the characters all have such amazing chemistry together. Props to Cole Sprouse on his Jughead, and Camila Mendes' phenomenal Veronica, in particular.

'dat cliffhanger...
Also hoping he's not dead, really liked the character.

That said, I hope to god they aren't stupid enough to introduce a supernatural element next season. I'm 99% sure if they will completely shit the bed if they do, this first season is far too grounded in reality. Would love for this show to not go down the toilet like Arrow did.

So... Where's grandma Blossom? I didn't see her out there as the mansion in flames. For a second I thought they were gonna go Afterlife (not that I've read it) with season two with Archie being the one getting got.

I know it's just a play on Prince Valiant, probably making it a relatively common reference to make but Veronica mentioning Hermione sleeping soundly in the arms of Prince Valium reminded of Beetlejuice. >_>

What if Jughead's foster family is the Spellmans. Sabrina made her debut in Jughead's comic after all (in the current Archie universe). That would be a neat twist.

That's what I was thinking.

I just realized.
If Fred is dead, then Archie would probably have to move to Chicago right? So chances are next season they won't kill him off. Thoughts?

He'll most likely live because
the robbery was most likely a cover, and was probably a hit on Hiram. No one jumps on a counter like that to commit a robbery...

That, and the only other 'gang' in Riverdale are the guys from Montreal that Hiram hired. It's no coincidence that crime was going up at around the same time.

I mean I figured it was probably Hiram. Jughead implied someone was behind it. But I wasn't sure if they would kill off Fred or not. I was reading an interview with of the heads behind Riverdale, and he attributed Fred being shot to like Bruce Wayne's parents being shot in front of him. I just wasn't sure if they would actually kill off fred or not.

Full Quote: ”What is he going to do on the other side of that?" Aguirre-Sacasa said. ”When we talk about what happened, when Archie sees his father shot before his eyes, we really compare it to a moment like when Bruce Wayne sees his parents gunned down or when Peter Parker learns his uncle had been murdered by a burglar. That is a huge, galvanizing moment for those characters and so it will be for Archie. He'll go on a hero's journey but it will go to a dark place of revenge, a place of violence before he starts to turn back towards the light of being a hero."

Should fans be worried about Fred making it to season two alive? Aguirre-Sacasa thought for a moment before answering carefully. ”We think of Peter Parker and Uncle Ben in that it's difficult to imagine Archie without his father, but I will say he has an amazing mother played by Molly Ringwald," he said. ”Fred has done an amazing job raising Archie and instilled some very core values, so even should the worst happen, I think Archie would be able to carry on with the spirit of Fred advising him."

Even based on the quotes
I think he will come back alive. Maybe rehab or hospital for a while but I doubt he is gone. There is still story left to tell with him

Regarding Fred, I think he pretty much has to live, otherwise Archie would presumably have to move to Chicago to live with his mother, and that's obviously incompatible with the show continuing.

That finale was lit!

They got me hooked for the second season now...

Poor Archie's dad.... only decent guy in town left! :(

Archie actually did some things this episode, actually bad ass during the rescue scene. +2 respect points for him.

Also he got to tap dat.

Show went out really strong. That might've been my favorite episode of the season. Betty was a damn thug, which I loved.

My favorite moment was Veronica having to restate what she said because Archie didn't know what 'wistfully' meant. Not everyone at Riverdale High has a Masters in English Lit lol. It was a very real moment.

Jughead being a Southside Serpent should be fun. Can't imagine that'll make Betty's life any easier.

Yooooo! He put the jacket on!

That and Cheryl's suicide attempt were very well done moments.

I thought Archie was about to revert back to peak fuck boi but he hulked out and saved Cheryl, plus he didn't break up with Veronica to be with Betty like I thought he was about to do.

Betty was still the MVP. Again.

I don't know. Some people might want to learn about the cameo of
Melissa Joan Heart
by themselves. That along with Jughead's line
"You know Betty... I really am the GhostWriter24 of Us."
could leave many people legit shook if they are waiting for the Netflix premiere.

Good thing this was renewed, because I couldn't live with that fucking ending.

And I will hold onto every last bit of hope for Sabrina next season. They don't even need to make the supernatural a big element, I just wanna her around in case they do something for the Halloween.

Few stray predictions for next season:

It was Hermione who ordered the hit and the target was Archie, she wanted Fred out of the picture and what better way to convince him other than target his boy? Hey, it worked on FP. Either that or Hiram wasn't comfortable with the idea of a redhead and his daughter getting too close.

Bughead will be over and Archie and Betty will finally be a thing. I can see the first couple breaking up because of the Serpent deal and Archie being in a constant flux between the two girls.

Josie will be more involved with the plot since the mayor is now doing everything she can to clean her image. And because Ashleigh Murray is probably less busy now.

Should Sabrina ever be a thing and, by extension, the supernatural. This is not the last time we saw Jason.

There is no way she'd freeze, gingers have the core of the sun inside of them

Also they don't want him at Southside High, he'd be with the normals. They also !also zombies there

And Betty continues to be the worse character

Damn, that ending.

I wasn't sure what to think about the show at the start, but by the end it definitely won me over.

Solid season. Our "heroes" can be so dumb though. Sure they save Cheryl, who could very well could have died from hypothermia, but instead of bringing her to a hospital or anything, they take her to Veronica's house and then leave her alone right after her suicide attempt.

I'm operating under the assumption that Veronica sold out Archie's dad for the hit. She knew exactly where he would be.

I don't actually believe that, but hope it is true lol

I only watched up to episode 6 and loss interest. Now that the season is over I was wondering if you guys would recommend watching the rest? Does it get better?

Okay here's my thinking...

  • Loved the episode right from the beginning. That music. The two writers!
  • Scooby Doo shout out. That spinning camera around the kids as they chat.
  • FP scenes were fun. How did Archie get in there to talk with him?
  • Archie says "I'm useless!" The entire audience says "I know!"
  • Hermione really erring on the side of evil this episode. I suspect her arc next season will be a question of how bad she'll go.
  • Madchen Amick slayed again this episode. You can tell she really is a decent person behind an awful husband and some big mental troubles.
  • Jughead is apparently completely at home on the wrong side of the tracks? Being around good people made him emo?
  • The scene with Cheryl was so tense. AND FINALLY ARCHIE PUT TO GOOD USE. All that he has are his muscles and lack of brains. Turns out that's enough to punch through ice.
  • Archie and Veronica are cool. Nice couple. I hope they stick to having a good relationship, no bullshit drama between the two, let third wheel hateful Hiram handle that.
  • Fred seems to want to try and keep the Lodges on the straight and narrow. So he gets a hit on him. Brutal.
  • I got a milkshake after watching this episode.
  • Cheryl setting the world ablaze! Thata girl!
  • Teens shouldn't be having sex.
  • Seeing Jughead and Betty being really sexually aggressive seemed kind of out of character for both of them. And Jughead putting on the jacket seemed WILDLY out of character. That was the only thing I outright disliked.
  • Fred'll survive. You don't tease that kind of animosity between him and Hiram and not intend to show it. Only way I could see that changing is if Molly Ringwald gets a regular deal.
  • I need Blake Neely's soundtrack ASAP. Unfortunately if it's anything like the other shows, it won't be out until like September.

The deleted scene is AMAZING. Can't wait for main character Reggie next year. These two as well:

'Riverdale' Boss Breaks Down Finale Cliffhangers and Season 2 Plans
Riverdale EP On Introducing the Supernatural, and Sabrina the Teenage Witch
tldr; yes Sabrina is was under serious consideration, they didn't they could fit her into the packed show and the tone wasn't quite there yet.

Also, more of this. This is what should be making Jughead smile most of all:

I had the same thought while watching. Especially when they didn't say the foster families name and we didn't see them. I thought the big reveal would be Jughead staying with the Spellmans.

Okay here's my thinking...

  • Jughead is apparently completely at home on the wrong side of the tracks? Being around good people made him emo?

Yeah, Hermione was in straight up soap villain territory in this episode. Her and Hiram are gonna be scheming next season.

I particularly liked the subversion there, where we expect to see Jughead in trouble at the new school and he's actually flourishing. Betty will have to bring out her darkside to keep up with the newest serpent...THUGHEAD!

God dammit I wanted Sabrina. If they're doing Sabrina next season they really should have put it in the finale. It would have gotten some amount of attention.

That was part of why they didn't put her in. They didn't want a showstealer and they'd have to devote time to her.

Nah, you reveal towards the end. During that Imagine Dragons song, you show Sabrina and the black cat.

Cole, can I get a writing job please? Warning: you may have to kiss Archie next season.

The cast soundtrack is available on digital platforms (or Spotify at least) already. Good if you want Archie serenading you while you sleep. Still waiting on Neely's work.

I mean, clearly you're a better writer than Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, replace him asap.

Sabrina, as fun as she would've been, would drastically change the show. That's clearly not what they want to do yet.

what a boner killer for betty.

Cheryl just erasing her past. First water, then fire. waiting for Earth next.

also fucking archie always trying to save the day got his daddy shot.

need the product placement again.

On a superficial note, Archie was really filling that gray t-shirt in the first half of the episode... appreciate that he barely wore the jacket over it.

Riverdale Parents: A Definitive Ranking

1. Fred Andrews: Fred was the best parent on the show right out of the gate, and he pretty much kept it up throughout the season, other than momentarily being insensitive to Jughead in episode 12. That's why the other parents decided he had to go.

2. Sheriff Keller: Keller is a terrible cop, but as a father he seems perfectly fine.

3. Mary Andrews: Seems like a nice lady, but still packed up and left her son behind without (apparently) much contact for years.

4. Sierra McCoy: Sort of similar to the above entry for Keller, McCoy is a bad mayor, and her parental encouragement of Josie is at time unhealthy, but as we saw in the one real spotlight episode on their relationship, she does try to provide emotional support.

5. Hermione Lodge: The parents most clearly straddling the line between good and evil, at times she's been a really good mother, at others, particularly in this episode, an outright terrible one. She'd have ranked in second place at the start of the season; time will tell whether she falls further.

6. F.P. Jones: I really struggled with ranking F.P., since the final episodes leave no doubt that he has a real love for his son and is willing to make sacrifices for him, but he still deliberately rendered his son homeless at one point, and was a sufficiently bad parent that forced his son to leave the house in the first place. Call him "most improved" over the course of the season.

7. Alice Cooper: The Coopers were presented wholly negatively at the start of the season. Alice became more sympathetic over time, but I'm not sure I'd really call her a good parent based on anything we've seen, since even her well-intentioned actions tend to be dickish. And when the opening stretch revolves around you imprisoning your pregnant teenage daughter in an asylum, the bar for redemption is a bit higher than anything she did subsequently.

8. Hal Cooper: In the early stretch of episodes he and Alice were a tag-team of terrible parenting, but with Alice in the forefront; after the focus shifted primarily to Alice, he mostly faded into the background. Despite returning to the family by season's end, he did little to really warrant that.

9. Miles McCoy: Pretentious asshole, loves jazz more than his daughter.

10. Mrs. Jones: In her defense, nobody wants a weird son.

11. Penelope Blossom: At least she's not Clifford.

12. Clifford Blossom: Need I say more?

I can't believe people liked this finale. It was a hot mess. Way too much stuff crammed into a single episode and way too much melodrama even for a teen show on the CW.

Episode 12 was pretty good, even if they did go with the most obvious person being the murderer.

About the supernatural bit, I feel like the time is easily already there. I mean, grandma Rose was definitely borderline. And, it doesn't have to be like Supernatural, it can be subtle & sub-plot material.

Yeah. I think an overt acknowledgement of the supernatural in Riverdale would be weird. Like on the show 'Felicity' when they introduced magic and time travel. But #spookyshit dancing around the edges and then being explored in a Sabrina spinoff would be dope.

That was a pretty solid finale. Lots of content to chew on, satisfying conclusions for most of the main cast, some legitimately gripping moments and a banger of a cliffhanger. Really excited to see where Archie goes in the 2nd season, since he's definitely not going to be in backseat anymore.

Cheryl better join the Investigation Riverdale Team in season 2.

When will season 2 casting news be released? I want to know if my boy Kevin/Casey Cott has been upgraded to a regular cast member.

My guess is that Archie/Veronica saving Cheryl is going to be what provides the route for Cheryl to move further from enemy and closer to friend on the "frenemy" scale. Especially since her brother's death will be wrapped up and she's kind of been reset as a character with this finale, I think we could see her join the main crew in a somewhat sassy, biting way. Perhaps she'd still butt heads with Kevin and be snarky with Betty but ultimately be on their team.

Cheryl trying to kill herself and Archie getting her was the best part
Episode was a bit too packed to let everything breath.

Thought this was a fantastic first season. Really interesting take on the Archie franchise, and all of the characters were wonderfully realized, fleshed out, and portrayed well by their actors. Straddled the line between CW teen drama and gripping murder mystery better than I would expect, and it was engaging throughout.

With all of the interesting threads they set up for season two, between Betty having a long-lost brother, Jughead joining the Serpents, Hiram coming back, and how Archie's gonna react to someone killing (or trying to kill?) his dad, I'll definitely be back in the fall. They better give my girl Josie more screentime and something to actually do in the story though smh, they put her in the main cast and barely used her. Bump Kevin up to a main role too, dude is great.

I really liked the last episode. Since the murder mystery was wrapped up in the previous episode it could have been a bit anti-climatic and tum-te-dum but there was a nice mix of the emotional aftermath and a last bit of high school antics stuff with the Jubilee and the setting up of the next season.

One of my favourite bits was when it was like:

[Internal: The other high school]

JUGHEAD: Hahaha! I'm so happy here!

RIVERDALE KIDS: OH MY GOD, WE HAVE TO GET YOU OUT OF THIS HELLHOLE!!!
