Rolling Stone Releases 50 Greatest Video Games of All Time List

Can anyone actually justify why BOTW is the GOAT beyond just mindless Nintendo deep throating? There's barely any fucking content in the game.

It's one of the blandest open world games I've ever played. I got around 15-20 hours and dropped it because it's so barren and tedious to traverse. Didn't even bother picking Tears of the Kingdom.

Looks like a list made by someone who doesn't play games much, just the popular shit.
Yeah thought this was one of those hipster snark lists where a a magazine not known for games tries hard to be "woah, we play games tool" with an article like this.

Tetris at number 2 because you want to appear to have historical knowledge & like your paying respects or something but Breath of the Wild as number 1?

Fuck offf

pretty decent list. Obviously some wonky shit but the great hitters are there for the most part. Botw as 1 is a joke but well, i can respect the list as a whole.
Glad to see Minecraft and Sims there, may would probably not think about those games. but they had huge impact. as well as the original counter strike.

List is surprisingly good, except a few places where I literally don't understand the thought process at all.

There isn't a world where BotW would make my top 100, let alone number one. Last of Us is not my cup of tea, I get why people like it...but #5 ALL TIME? Nah. Those two look and feel like gotta have some recency bias in the top. I'm not used to seeing SMW in the top 5 (It is for me).

Other ones I don't get:
18. Madden? I used to play alot of Madden and can't really think why 04 would be considered a top game of all time
33. NBA 2k11? I enjoy sports games, but I'm not sure any deserve to be a top 50 game of all time, let alone a forgetable early entry into a series like 2k.
39. GoW 2018? Not even the 3rd best GoW game, let alone top 50 of all time
43. Celeste? Nah not even close

Link to the Past, Symphony of the Night, and Hades all deserve higher spots on this list.

Usually these lists are just complete jokes, but this has a surprising amount of good choices, minor rearranging and they're set.

Breath of the Wild shouldnt even be in the top 30, let alone number one spot lol. The game hasnt inovated or changed the gaming industry with its title like DOOM did. It was new for a Zelda game but nothing in it was new for open world rpg folks, actually it was barebones as fuck.

This reminds me how antiquated it feels when Wikipedia continues to source now-online publications like this when they create stupid lists. You'll read eg. The Shining wikipedia entry and in the details under Legacy see something like "was rated one of the greatest films of all time by Wired in 2020" and I just think... these old outlets are no longer noteworthy in any way, they're all basically buzzfeed online now. There's nothing notable or worthy of record about their latest lists.

(also: BOTW was absolutely one of the top-3 moments in my life of gaming and I'm in mid 40s, it's a genuine generational landmark)

No Heroes of Might & Magic 3, no Age of Empires II: DE, no WarCraft 3, no Super Mario Galaxy, RDR2 doesn't even the deserve to be on that list, GTA 5 instead of San Andreas or Vice City. Where is Final Fantasy VI? Final Fantasy Tactics? Fallout 3 instead of 1. Why is Witcher 3 in this list? Tony Hawk's 1 instead of 2? Elden Ring instead of Dark Souls 1 or 3? I wouldn't put Breath of the Wild at #1. It's in the top 5, though.

That list is all kinds of fucked.

Once the Chrono Trigger Pixel Remaster happens, they can use this article in the ad:

No Super Mario 64? No Ocarina of Time? Yeah, can't take it seriously.

Honest to god I played through it at it's best on a PC emulator and the whole game just blurs together in my mind, it's like I didn't play it yet I did, for 100 hours. It's not even in the top 10 open world games I've played.
For a casual audience, Breath of the Wild's rules make more sense than most videogames. If you see a box made out of wood, you can burn it. If you see an island in a lake, you can freeze the water to get to it. It's naturalistic puzzle solving is incrediblefor people who don't spend a lot of time playing videogames.

I disagree that it is number one of all time, however.

Bloodborne missing is a travesty. Resident Evil 4 is too low for having created OTS. RDR2 should be higher than GTAV. TOTK is better than BOTW. Dark Souls is influential af and should easily be top 10.

Meh

Breath of the Wild at no. 1? What a bold and unusual choice. Could they even tell you why? Of course they couldn't - just some waffle about a 'sense of adventure' that they can't substantiate because Nintendo reminds them of being ten again.

A safe list, in my opinion. This is the list of video games you could show someone who's never played them before to give a broad survey of what the medium's about.

Then, if they show further interest, that's when you get into the more niche stuff and other franchise entries that are arguably better games but didn't have the same mainstream cultural impact that these did. Like the Yakuza and Persona series, Deus Ex, nearly any Metal Gear Solid entry besides 1, Bioshock.

I'm not a NFL football gamer, but Madden 2004? Was that NFL game that good?

No Terraria? I would had thought a solid game which sold a ton and is a unique kind of game would hit the list.

On any Top 50 or 100 list, I'd put Streets of Rage 2, Ultima Underworld (1 or 2) and Heroes of Might Magic 3 on them.

As a primary sports gamer from youth into my 20s it’s widely regarded as the best madden ever. But a top 50 of all time? Sorry if any sports title (not racing) made that list it would be Tecmo Super Bowl or MAYBE NHL 94

Not into sport games but I think International Superstar Soccer Deluxe for SNES or PES6 for Playstation 2 would have deserved a place because they are more massive than any NHL or NFL game. However, they all pale against NBA Jam TE, which is I think the only sport game that should have been in that list.
