RTTP: Deadly Premonition - The Best "Bad" Game Ever.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Worst game I completed. I don’t exactly remember what happens but I do distinctly remember thinking the ending being batshit crazy.

What about D4?

I quite liked the characters in that.

I've never played D4 despite owning it.

P.S, if anyone has some time to spare, here's a 2 hour interview with Jeff Kramer, the voice of Francis York Morgan.

Been a while since I saw this but IIRC he mentions a lot of development stuff in the game, like how all of his voice work was completed in 5 days (which is fucking impressive considering the sheer amount of voice work the game has).

And that he was called a year or so after finishing his initial work to re-record all the lines where the character's name is spoken, cause they changed the character's name and some other things which led the publishers of the game to be called by the Twin Peaks license holders for being way too similar.

Fascinating stuff for fans, really.

Based adamsapple adamsapple making quality threads.

I still have both DP games on the backlog, but your thread might make me play them sooner.

My advise is to play DP1 and forget that DP2 ever existed.

I will never, never, never forget this game and how it made me feel.

Batshit insane indeed, janky as hell in every gameplay aspects, but it oozes with heart, passion and talent (and lack of budget also) and has genius ideas.

Thanks for reminding me I need to play it again someday.

That's an incredibly apt way of putting it. There are a million 'better' games I've played but this is one of those memorable ones that always remains in your mind.

Kinda like Final Fantasy VII, or Resident Evil 4 for me.

It's also one of my favorite games, and I love being able to play the Xbox 360 version (the best version) on my Xbox Series X with Auto HDR and locked 30 fps.

Xbox series X, the world's most powerful console, now starting at 599…
Xbox, when everybody plays we all win®

I love Twin Peaks, but the game is so crap on a technical level nothing can save it.

One of the few games that actually needs to be remade, by a competent dev.

The game has leaderboards for all kinds of shit. After completing it I decided to focus in on one of the more obscure ones and so for a while I was the best in the world at checking the weather forecast in Deadly Premonition.

I hate to burst your bubble but those leaderboards aren't actually connected to any online service :p

They're just locally calculated things and the game gives you the arbitrary rank on them based on how well you've done by its own internal logic.

You're not actually comparing or competing with anyone else.

So, this is like Shenmue meets Twin Peaks?

This is a *way* better and more ambitious than Shenmue could ever dream of. Not to mention it's an actual complete game. 🤭

In our hearts, we're all #1 at Peeping.

Just pulled this off of my Xbox, you can see how it's broken lol, the overall rating at the bottom puts me at Rank B but on the top there's a huge "S" tag.

Shit's broken, but still very entertaining to see just how many minutes you spent peeping, doing fortunes on the coffee etc etc.

I bought a 360 for this game after hearing a glowing review on The Hot Spot podcast lol

I remember getting all the achievements was a pain. All hard mode did was massively jack up enemy health. Isn't that right, Zack?

They can remaster it at 720@30 with dips. Gentlemen, we have the technology. But working on modern systems.

One of my favourite games of all time. One of the reasons to buy again a SX for cheap when it all crumbles Dreamcast style.

I'm gonna raise my hand here and say I prefer the PS3 version. I've played some of it on 360, completed it many years later on PS3. The extra scenes added throughout the game are interesting, though as stated in the OP, non-canon. However, the controls are much better on PS3 than 360, especially when driving. This seals the deal for me as the superior version. As for framerate issues on PS3, I only noticed them seriously at times that didn't matter, usually when picking up an item and you're given a close up of it. It's annoying but since it doesn't happen during combat it doesn't break the experience.

I personally have never gotten the PC version to run properly. I hear that if you can get it running right with all the mods installed it's a dream, but it's not been a go for me. If you can get it running with those mods, it's arguably the best version.

I can say that on the PS3, it's a fun game to Platinum that really rewards you for doing all there is to do in Greenvale. If you don't care about such things and can't get the game running right on PC, then using a reliable PS3 emulator that can help offset some issues is definitely a viable alternatie.

This is not a bad game on the 360 and you may have some serious fun with it there, just be warned that some parts that are very frustrating had controls streamlined on PS3 and PC. I've not played the Switch version, so I have no comment on that particular port.

However you play the game, enjoy! Go in as blind as possible and just enjoy every moment in the weird and wonderful world of Deadly Premonition.

Yeah, and they also removed the difficulty option from all future releases, they all have a single mode which is iirc equal to the easy mode on the X360 version. Odd decision, but like mentioned earlier, SWERY was not a fan of adding combat to the game at all, but it was required by publisher mandate. So he did whatever he could to mitigate it.

If you ever play in the future, even on Hard though, the Infinite Wrench you can get from the Becky / Quint sidequest pretty much hour 1 in the game, it can get you through 99% of the game, you just need a reliable ranged weapon for one specific enemy type (the wall crawling ladies).

Wait, there's no way to play this on a PS5? I thought the game was on PS+ Premium streaming but I can't find it in the catalog list.

Damn, that's bullshit. Sony, this is prime candidate for up-rendering and a native re-release. I'll buy it ASAP if they do that.

I loved it playing on broken PC version. So much so that I pre-ordered Deadly Premonition 2 coz it had 30% pre order discount on PC but that game sucked.

I have every version of this. I adore it. Despite my profile pic, I cannot bring myself to try DP2, because no matter how much I enjoy it, it will never surpass my original playthrough years ago on the 360.

I just wanted to pop in and say that I love this, more than nearly anything else I've ever played. There will be nothing like it ever again, and I still cannot believe it exists.
