Rumor: Microsoft to limit playtime of Fortnite when using xCloud

I don't want to act like this service suddenly matters cause that's pure hypocrisy for consoles sales shills.

Typical MS to be honest. Promote something, it doesn’t make them money or relevant, revoke it. Shortsightedness.

To get console like gaming on devices with less power.

Yet it appears now xCloud doesn't give you "console like gaming" when it has limited playing time. Your argument on "just switch to a different device" also fail when that less powerful device don't have such game or incapable of running it.

That's because it was only made free from April 2024. For most of Fortnite history you needed Xbox Gold to play it.
news about the change

I didn't know you need a subscription to play certain demos. It would make sense if those demos had an online component, but the wording doesn't seem to indicate that:

Demos of games that require a pre-order or purchase...

Does that mean most demos are pay walled? The article is from 2022 and I'm not familiar with the Xbox ecosystem - is that accurate?

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

No, I haven't seen any game demo be pay walled so far, or one that explicitly requires a sub service.

I tried to do a little digging, but only found years old comments affirming Gold was required. Perhaps the article is incorrect or the policy for demos changed after it was written.

We had discussions years back on how Sony and Nintendo made free to play games not require paid subscription, and that Xbox was holding out for no reason.

Here was the original announcement of the change.

Yeah, I remember they held out for a while. I think for stuff like Netflix too. But I was referring specifically to demos and it appears the article was incorrect about that. Or, at the very least, it's no longer true.

Is it confirmed epic was paying? I assumed it was done to get people to try and pay for it to stream other games.
No, it's not confirmed. I was just curious if they were. Microsoft could just be eating the cost to boost engagement and now they're reaching a point where they don't want to subsidize it like they have been.

These fortnite kids spend way more money on microtransactions than standard 60 bucks, they should get preferential treatment if anything
It's because MS is good at spotting threats and Fortnite is a parasitic rival platform, period.
F2P multiplat games like Fortnite make host platforms 'lots of money' at the detriment of other games and the ecosystem as a whole.
In the long run it's better for a platform to pull in $500 from 10 different studios than $1000 from Fortnite.
10 studios getting paid $35 each benefits the platform more than rival platform Epic getting paid $700.
If one of those 10 games is an exclusive the platform can gain loyalty which is something that no amount of Fortnite money will ever buy.

It happened in the 360 days, Gold had demos 7 days before Silver players. I think since the xbox one they've stopped doing that.

You will own nothing and like it. You will also only be able to use it for the amount of time i let you. You will like that too.

Every time I see that dude wearing the Cocteau suit, I think he did it on purpose.

It was 30 days.

Every new profile you create on the console, gets 1 month of gold for free. This can be done to 5 new profiles/GT's, and yes, it can be done even if you refurbish your console from Microsoft for an RRoD.

This indeed was stopped from the Xbone generation, because people were exploiting it too much.

I meant game demos, Silver members could only download them 7 days after release.

Oh, my bad. That's true.

I didn't read the entire context of your convo with the other member, and assumed you meant new GT's when you mentioned demos.

They had a lot of shit behind the gold paywall back then. The most egregious ones were Internet Explorer and the Facebook apps.

That makes sense for cloud gaming, streaming games like this takes CPU/GPU time and some people pley them for some almost infinite amount of time... it doesn't work really well with the way their business makes its money I suppose.
