You can charge and play using a USB-C to USB-A cable so not sure what that is about. I think there is some understandable confusion since there are so many different terms and ports being thrown around.
The short of it is if you are using a power source (battery brick or AC plug) that is outputting the appropriate power rating, with a cable also rated to carry that, then you won't have any issues.
If you are buying everything fresh you might as well go USB-C for everything and get the highest rated sources it supports. If you are trying to repurpose something you already have you will have to dig a bit more in the nitty-gritty to see if anything in the power chain will be a problem.
Edit: also worth pointing out that Reddit post, while having a lot of good info, was not the most... Uh.. scientific endeavor testing 4 units the dude had laying around (though still appreciate their effort.) I wouldn't be too quick to declare the recommended unit as 'the one to get' or whatever, but it seems like a perfectly good option.
