Secret Level IGN Review: 5/10

Verdict

If Secret Level isn’t quite a transparent marketing ploy, it still falls victim to the sort of fatigue that results from mainlining one video game trailer after another. Beyond a few highlights, it is too often a humorless smear of action-heavy conflict that fails to convey the breadth of the medium, all while suffering the usual pitfalls of the anthology format. If nothing else, the series accurately represents what a season of Love, Death, and Robots might be like if it were all about brands.

I blame Concord.

I didn't even want to watch it from the very beginning. It's not really a movie, it's just a collection of ads for several games, well, those who agreed to pay for the film adaptation =)

I kept seeing references to Secret Level in posts but never bothered to find out what it was.

It might be worth a shot for the franchises I know, but the free Prime games are more appealing by the sound of things.

No clue what this show is about but there's an Unreal Tournament episode so I'll watch.
Depending on how old you are, if you remember youtube AMVs or fan animations (like recently with Dragon Ball Legend), then expect that but with a big budget. A love letter to specific video game I.P.

I am once again convinced that video games don't necessarily translate to good media and vice versa, the audience of these forms of entertainment are very different so just let stuff be as it is.

I would agree if there wasn't existing evidence elsewhere that proves your post to be false.

I'm 100% certain that if video game TV shows and movies were given the 2000s screenwriters who adapted books like LoTR and Harry Potter into movies or hell even the early 2010s Marvel screenwriters, this wouldn't even be a point of conversation.

By problem with secret level is the same problem i had with love death + robots. The episodes aren't nearly long enough to create a compelling narrative because they're having to jam everything into this insanely small runtime. The episodes for this should've been 1hr long hbo style because then you could get alottttt more time with these characters to expand the lore and to tell people about them and the world they live in.

For those that have seen them all (the 8 released, at least) is there any adult content such as nudity? My son wants to watch it today after school, but I'm not seeing much on content just yet.

There's extreme gore and very harrowing stuff in the D&D and 40k episodes. Not sure how old your kid is but I wouldn't let little kids watch this under any circumstance.

Appreciate it. He's 7, so I figured the easiest "no" for me would be 40k. Just given the nature of the franchise, if it was anything close to that, it was going to have gore. With Love, Death & Robots I only let him watch a couple of the lighthearted eps but majority were a no. Figured maybe the Pac-Man unless they slipped something into there as well.

New World is a banger episode too, very funny and elevated by the voice acting.

I don't know how this is a 5/10, every show so far is awesome, Armored Core is the only mid one.
