Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

Yar. Last notice I got, same I'm sure you got, was saying that they would just make all the remaining orders when their next game went into production. Just hoping we get the boss as fuck plastic clam shell cases and of the same quality of the earlier production runs.

Not that I'm condoning it, but it would be hilarious if these new reprints were in the later styled cardboard boxes used in the US.

I guess. The packaging is intricate and orgeous, and there's no reason it should get damaged. We're not 12 year olds anymore you know?

I think you missed the conversation back there about the hate for cardboard MD games. They seemed to be so flimsy they got wrecked no matter how much older than 12 you were, hehe.

Besides games that I bought that had beat up boxes already, pretty much all of my cardboard boxed games are perfectly fine, and I've had most of them since I was kid...so I wouldn't call them flimsy myself. But maybe I'm just lucky. Hah.

So i picked up a yamaha pss-270 keyboard at the flea market for $5 yesterday. Not knowing anything about it i was pretty stoked to see it has the same type of yamaha fm synthesis as a mark III.

Now im circuit bending it and swear its making sounds exactly like genesis sound effects. Ive heard attacks, lava, guns, waves, literally everything. Possibly the best $5 ive ever spent.

All mine are fine except the few MD ones. The part that the carts sit is in particularly nightmarish!

I didn't miss anything, I just disagree that cardboard boxes are inherently bad. I much prefer Watermelon's cardboard Pier Solar to, say, Super Fighter Team's piss-poor clamshells with the flimsy construction, too-glossy front, and off-standard width.

I own lots of the original cardboard releases. I use inexpensive foldable plastic cases to protect them from bookshelf wear, but I don't feel the need to do that with the cardboard Pier Solar box. It's sturdy and doesn't seem ready to collapse like the original red inner trays did.

That said, it wouldn't be too much to ask for WM to include glossy sheets for people to include in their own cases for a "roll-your-own" clamshell design.

yeah, leaning in this direction myself...even as a kid though, i paid $100 for PS IV; you can be damn sure that box stayed pristine.

this is actually really cool!

Nice pickup! I'd love to fool around with something like that.

They aren't just covers. The whole thing is paper.

Truly the devil's work. Every 32x game is like this too.

I thought as much myself but was surprised to find that NBA JAM T.E. for 32X actually came in a hard case (I picked up a copy a while back).

god i hope any of you with a complete 32x collection didn't pay much for Web of Fire somehow

I don't have a complete collection (nor do I really want one, haha), but I got a CIB copy of Web of Fire (US Version) for ~$30 at a used game store in Japan back when I lived over there - talk about luck! :D

anyone here have a sega nomad?

I'm in the process of doing the Sega Nomad Battery Mod, I have the Sega Nomad Powerback, a Sony NP-F550 Battery and charger. I've already done the Nomad LCD mod

I opened up the powerback removed the battery cells and cut out the platic pieces inside the pack to make room for the sony battery.

I have seen numerous videos of finished battery pack mods and read a somewhat vague tutorial,
however I am a little lost as to what should be soldered to what when putting the Sony Charging circuit into the pack. Here are pictures of my sony charger circuit, which also seems different from that in videos and tutorials I have stated above.

I understand that the original charging circuit can't be used but I'd like to use the original dc port and replace the led with the new charger led (red and green), however again I only see finished results of this mod on youtube and no tutorials if anyone can help with some clarification it would help me out alot!

Thanks for your time and help!!

Makes sense. Acclaim also had unique cart designs with nonstandard gamebit screws unlike regular Sega licensed releases.

Huh, you're right that Acclaim has its own Genesis cart shells -- they say Acclaim on them and use different screws. Their 32X games are in standard Sega 32X cart shells, though, with the usual gamebit screws and Sega labels... but the cases are plastic. I guess Sega made all 32X cart shells, but still allowed Acclaim to put them in their own cases.

^past an Everdrive, replacing Shining Force 1 is near the top of my want list (after Alien Solider, heh), and i rented Marvel Land at least twice...it's a weird game, post your thoughts!

also you can't go wrong with PSIV or bomberman.

Not a bad little haul. Pirates of Dark Water was supposed to be above-average, wasn't it?

And don't forget the cheats for Robocod: Collect the Cake, Hammer, Earth, Apple... and the last thing that begins with a "T", and there was another one which I forget (but it's obvious when you see it). I think CHEAT is invincibility, the other is infinite lives. So that might be L.I.V.E.S at the next area where there are items to pick up.

PS. CRANK IT!

NyMartin mentioned doing that mod already.

It really does help.

Thanks

After alot of trial and error I have reached success with the battery. The Nomad runs off it perfectly, now is a matter of testing how long it gets from the original full charge run it down to zero and see if it charges in the actual battery pack. For some reason the led doesnt light up for the battery when plugged in to the charger, which is strange since it should light to indicate that its receiving charge if anyone whos done the mod already can help it would be really appreciated.

Here are a few pics (as you can see I still have the screen protector on from the new LCD):

It's been blocked here for ages. Try something else, like Imgur.

Thanks for the tips, though I don't typically use cheats in games.

I haven't played any of the games yet, but I did watch my brother play them for a bit. He liked them all. I didn't play because I had a headache. I might play them in a little bit, though.

Thanks I joined like a year ago but didn't know how to post images.
Perhaps now that this thing is actually portable to keep a battery I may carry it around.
My next mission is to try and do a similar LCD/ Battery mod for my Game Gear.

I'll be honest, I was kind of just boasting that I could remember the cheat code for the game ;) I struggle day to day with things I'm supposed to remember but don't, but can remember cheat codes for games I've barely even played. MK, Ecco, SF2SCA... there's probably hundreds more.

I remember walking into an EB in '97 or '98 and seeing one of these there. I could not believe there was such a thing as a portable Genesis. It seemed like some weird Chinese knock off. It had to be. I was a huge sega fan and never heard of this thing.
I asked the guy at EB about it and he said it was something Sega released and it never sold well. He said it was on clearance and I could get it for $40 with the Genesis 6 Pack Cart + the non-rechargeable battery pack. I'm pretty sure something like that can never happen again in my life. :)

I still have the same Nomad with a battery pack, It has a bit of a nasty scratch on the screen. Haven't looked into replacing the plastic screen yet.
But doing an LCD mod on it just seems wrong. The battery pack mod would be pretty worthwhile though.

on a related note, local shop currently has a Nomad working for $100. i don't even know if that's a great price but man do i wish i could justify it.

yeah, figured as much...found a forum listing for one for $40, no battery pack - figure that's an expensive part?

yea there aren't too many battery packs around any more so the price has gone up in recent years, which kind of sucks since 20 year old batteries won't work, it'll require a mod to be used.

yeah, id been reading about the screen & battery mods, neither of which look cheap...it'd be great to find a unit with these already done though.

This came yesterday. I tried out the first level and it is a pretty awesome run-and-gun game. Now I need a second controller.

Gunstar Heroes is pretty fun but I can't help but feel it's overrated. When people call it the best run and gun on the Genesis I wonder if they've never played Hard Corps.
