It's honestly a lot slimmer than I'd like it to be.

Speaking of Alisia Dragoon, it arrived from the Ebay yesterday. Unfortunately I have not been able to get the game to work; I just get a black screen. I have cleaned it several times with alcohol to no avail. My other games all work so I figured that it must just be the game, but I did notice that my system does not grip this game quite as hard as the others. This leads me to think that it may be that my cartridge slot needs the pins tightened. I gave the game to a friend to test out on his system to see if this is the case. If he can't get it to work either, I was going to ask the seller for a refund. Has anyone else ran into this issue with genesis carts and has anyone had issues returning games bought off of Ebay if they do not work?

One of the reasons I bought a Game Genie. I don't care about the cheats, but as a pass-through device, its really useful (epsecially since 2 of my 3 Genesis systems are kind of old (My model 1 being one that was purchased in March of 1990)

A few more:
Robo Aleste
Time Gal
You play as a guy in Robo Aleste, not a girl. In the Aleste games, you play as a male character in Aleste (Power Strike), Space Megaforce (Super Aleste), Robo Aleste, Aleste Gaiden, and Spriggan, Spriggan Mark 2, and Power Strike II (SMS) if we count them, and a female character in Aleste 2, MUSHA, GG Aleste, and GG Aleste II. There is a female co-pilot or computer operator or something in Super Aleste (JP version), behind you in your ship, but for whatever reason they cut her out of the intro and redid the ending in the Western versions so as to not include her... but then added her onto the box art. Yeah, that one still doesn't make sense to me. Whoever drew that must not have known that they were cutting her from the actual game...

Also so far we were only listing Genesis games, not Sega CD/32X... in addition to Time Gal, the Sega CD also has Popful Mail, Keio Flying Squadron, Annet Again, and Magical Girl Silky Lip for games with female leads. As for games with gender choice for the main character, Dark Wizard has that (it has separate campaigns for each character, some of each gender). Some of the RPGs, such as Eye of the Beholder and Might & Magic III, let you create your party of course. Oddly enough the Sega CD Dungeon Explorer game has male characters only; the other Dungeon Explorer games all have female playable characters, but not the Sega CD game.

Popful Mail was actually listed in the first post asking about this subject. I didn't list Sega CD or 32X games because I'm not quite as intimate with their libraries, and as such didn't think of any examples that weren't already listed.

A far as the 32X goes I can't think of anything with playable female characters other than fighting games. And I can't think of any fighting games on the Genesis, Sega CD, or 32X which have a female character as the games' lead character...

Sixfortyfive listed Anette Again and Popful Mail
You're right, but no other Sega CD games had been mentioned, so I thought it was mostly just a Genesis list... guess not.

Sorry, you're right about Robo Aleste (I remember checking a video when looking into this earlier but somehow got the protagonist confused with one of the antagonists which is female).

The others should be correct though.

gonna beat me some strider returns today
striderreturns_zps17bd21fd.jpg

Strider Returns is an okay European action-platformer. It's nothing like Strider, but that's okay, I never liked Strider all that much anyway... (Well, the NES game is good, but the Genesis/Arcade/TCD game... eh.) Strider Returns gets way too hard, but honestly I'd probably rather play that than Strider. Yeah, I'm probably the only one, I know.

Not sure if threadworthy or already mentioned, but I read in EDGE today that the guy who did the sensible soccer book kickstarter is doing one on the Mega Drive. Includes insight from Naka and Suzuki, never before seen art from sega archives, the original streets of rage design doc, controller prototypes etc. Out in June.

Full title is Strider Returns this US Gold shit to Funcoland.

US Gold

oh god the same company responsible for the Game Gear Mega Man game..

see i dont remember even seeing that one, saw it at a garage sale and dude thought he had saturn MM8 or something, wanted a bunch for that + a game gear. glad i didn't bite, haha

I never liked Strider all that much anyway

So I finally stopped being hardheaded, bought some brasso and cleaned the hell out of Batman & Robin (brasso, alchohol, pink eraser, the works).

It works...and MAN!

Why are people sleeping on this compared to the SNES version?! Its amazing! Its like someone fused Gunstar Heroes with Batman: Return of the Joker. I can see the learning curve being a bit of a barrier to entry like most high action run and gun games, but the patterns arent hard to learn by any measure. The music is appropriately driving and very bass heavy, perfect for this type of action.

It's a good game. I think people are tuned off by both the difficulty and the fact it plays nothing like you'd expect a Batman game to play.

okay one more time before i order & be done with it: model 1 genesis, model 1 sega-cd, 32x, over RGB to upscaler:

- i have the cord that plugs in from the 32x to the RGB/serial whatever port on the genny
- I have a trio so AC is good
- ordering an RGB cable from retro_console_accessories, since SCART carries audio i think i don't need to wire shit into the genny's headphone port

i should be golden here yeah? cause last time i was missing layers of the level/visuals so i dissected the mushroom head & cleaned alla contacts, i think i'm good to go with this setup now though

*edit ahaha of course she's away until next week

...wait, i thought i had stereo out from it currently, really? lemme go boot up Sahnic, that's crazy

*edit oh wait wait haha that's right, my genesis RGB cable has a cord that plugs into the stereo jack, forgot about that! now it makes sense - still, i'm unplugging that cable since i'm pretty sure the first one i mentioned (cord going from 32X to Genesis) plugs into that exact port, yeah? in which case you're right, i'd be listening to mono which is booty. it doesnt look like she sells a 32x one like my genny that brings the sound cord so i don't know how to resolve this.

Can you not run a 3.5mm male to male audio cable from Genesis 1 to the Sega CD?

My Model 1 actually had a stereo mod done to it in addition to the S-Video mod. Sound is actually cleaner coming through that than through the headphone port, personally, and it outputs Sega CD audio through there too, meaning I don't need any mixing cable business.

Just need to get a female 3.5mm to male RCA adapter at some point so I can actually use it; right now, my RGB cable's male 3.5mm cord is plugged into the headphone jack like you'd expect.

Yes you can. That's why the Sega CD has a 3.5mm audio-in jack. Then use the Sega CD's composite audio output jacks for the audio.

I'm not entirely sure what you're asking, but the Genesis-32X cable connects to the Genesis's AV output jack. Obviously for a Genesis 1 you need that Genesis 2 to Genesis 1 adapter, because the Genesis 2 has that new AV jack which has stereo sound output in it. Then you connect your Genesis 2/32X AV cable to the 32X. The 32X came with a mono AV cable, I believe, but there's also a Genesis 2 stereo AV cable, or just get the stereo sound from the Sega CD (that's what I do).

I think he's wondering if connecting a 32X to a Model 1 Genesis means you can only get mono out of the 32X directly, ignoring that you can probably get stereo out of the headphone jack as usual.

Speaking of Model 1 32X's, I picked up a 32X last night. Unfortunately it only came with Model 2 cables, so I had to order new cables to get it to work. What 32X games or 32X Sega CD games are worth picking up? Behold the tower of power in all its majesty.

Well yeah, since the Genesis 1 AV output is mono only, of course a 32X connected to a Genesis 1 would only have mono output from its AV cable. Unless you have some kind of mod, with a Genesis 1 you must use that headphone jack for stereo. The Sega CD makes that easy, as I said, with its audio-in port and red and white rca audio jacks.

I didn't play Strider when it came out, it's a game I first played in the '00s sometime... and I was thoroughly unimpressed. Maybe I'd have liked it more if I'd played it back then, but generally games I liked then I still like, so I don't know... I just don't have all that much fun with it, and it's not rewarding either.

I have used this site in the past to hook up my Sega CD and used it to figure out how to hookup my 32X. It goes through each possible configuration step by step.

Virtua Racing Deluxe - My personal favorite version...I like it better then even the Saturn version.

32X Space Harrier is fun..

Afterburner Complete

Metal Head was pretty cool

Knuckles Chaotix - people either love this one or hate it

Kolibri - quirky 32x free range shmup

Shadow Squadron - 3D wing commander style game, its a bit plodding, but there is fun to be had out of it.

Corpse Killer 32X - yes, FMV games are usually terrible, but if you can find this for like a dollar you'll get some amusment out of it.

This tower actually serves a purpose and could have easily been someone's legit setup back in the day.

i currently get stereo out of my model 1 because of a specific RGB SCART cable retro_accessories made, which is negated since the 32X need to plug into the port where said RGB cable currently is. trying to find a way to maintain stereo sound when running RGB back out from said 32X directly.

I think he's wondering if connecting a 32X to a Model 1 Genesis means you can only get mono out of the 32X directly, ignoring that you can probably get stereo out of the headphone jack as usual.

what do you typically plug into the headphone jack (as usual) from the 32x to do this?

Model 1's headphone jack, not the 32X's. You'd get the video from the back of the 32X, and the audio from the Genesis's headphone jack in the front (via a 3.5mm to RCA converter). Pretty sure the mixed audio will still come out through there (although not having a 32X, this is mostly conjecture on my part).

Yup. That's what I do. Well, I actually have the headphone output connected to the back of the Sega CD and then use RCA cables to get it out from that, but yeah. Basically the same.

(32X doesn't have a headphone jack, by the way. Hah.)

That's how I have it setup on my Segazord, although it's a Model 2 Sega CD with my setup. Basically you mix the audio from the Genesis into the Sega CD, and then use a male-to-male RCA cable from the CD to your TV.

What 32X games or 32X Sega CD games are worth picking up?

Knuckles Chaotix is a popular choice, but one of the least impressive early Sonic games. Kolibri's an interesting little game, it's a hummingbird shooter! After Burner and Space Harrier are nearly arcade perfect ports from what I understand? Virtua Racing Deluxe beats the Genesis version and is very cheap. I've heard Virtua Fighter is a pretty good port although I heard Virtua Fighter Remix on the Saturn is suppose to be better. Shadow Squadron and Star Wars Arcade are kinda nice if you like space flight games. I like Tempo's style a lot.

Most of the 32XCD games are pretty shitty. Basically they just took FMV games that were already on the Sega CD and the 32x just makes them look a little better since the 32x has more colors. I picked up Night Trap mostly for lols, and you're guaranteed that it's the uncensored version.

I wish they made a 32X housing to match the Model 1 setup. Looks like such arse on anything but an M2 :/

Looks great in my CDX! ;)

As for 32X games:

Star Wars Arcade for sure!

I would say After Burner and Space Harrier as well, unless you have a Saturn, maybe get Sega Ages instead.

NBA Jam TE is pretty damn good too. Virtua Racing is fun.

Not a ton of stuff really. Been meaning to try out the WWF games but eh and Star Trek Starfleet Academy.

Even though I for some reason really like Knuckles Chaotix... erm, it's really not a very good game IMHO. Music is great though, along with the boss fights. The game does have a lot of interesting concepts going on, just not executed very well. I guess it's essential, so go for it.

Just picked up Tempo. Seems like it's actually kinda difficult to get a good condition copy that isn't sealed. I ended up biting the bullet on a sealed one, but I managed to pay under $50, so I'm pretty happy about it.

Last 32x game I want to get is Space Harrier. After that I think I'm about done with the 32x.

Cross-posting in multiple retro threads...

Went to the NWCGE Swap Meet in Portland this weekend. Didn't find anything on my want list, but picked up a few unexpected items.

PS2 stuff!
Found a slim PS2 with carry case and memory card for $10. It's the first model with power brick, but for that price I ain't complaining. (The only other PS2s I have are old fatties.) Got a $3 copy of SFEX3 to try out the slim in the hotel room. I was missing the soundtrack disc in my SH3, so I was happy to get this one for $5.

SEGA Genesis stuff!
$10 for a 6-button stick. Now I've got a pair, for even SF2 matches! Added Alisia Dragoon and Dick Tracy to the collection. And found the elusive pink Konami Justifier, $5 for the blue/pink pair. Looks like someone took exception to the pink and tried to rub it all off. lol

More SEGA stuff!
Fatal Fury Special and Ninja Gaiden for GameGear, but it's gonna be hard to play them, as the system's packed away somewhere in the garage. I hear Sega Rally 2 isn't all that hot, but I figure it's worth $3 to add to the DC collection. I already have Virtua Cop 2, but the disc is a Not For Resale one, which irks me to no end. So I bought another regular one. =)

Turbografx-16 stuff!
Don't know much about either Sinistron or Valis II, but looking forward to another shmup and some anime cut scenes. Surprised to see a decent selection of TG-16/PC Engine stuff at the show, as it seems they make fewer appearances than Nintendo/SEGA stuff.

Manuals!
Waded through stacks of manuals and found a few to match my cart-only copies of Illusion of Gaia, World Heroes 2, Super Bomberman 2, Fatal Fury Special, and Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!

Nintendo Power!
I really don't need more magazines cluttering up the house, but these two issues have features on Illusion of Gaia, FFIII/VI, Super Mario RPG, SFA2, and Super Punch-Out!!

All-in-all it was a fruitful event. Met some cool peeps, got a few good deals, and spent less than I expected to. Can't wait to do it again. =)
