Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

I was weird I guess because I took one look at the game (back when I REALLY wanted a Genesis as a kid), after opening one of the Genesis cases at the video store and saw it's screenshot on one of the posters inside. Something about playing a girl and her dragon really appealed to me. Still need to add that to my collection, but ultimately I'll probably track down a JP copy for the boxart especially.

Round 2 with Alisia Dragoon. Finally found it CIB for a decent price and it works this time. I picked it up a few months ago and the cart was dead, so I returned it. Game is pretty fun, though it is deceptively difficult.

There are a few hidden lightning power ups that help you max out earlier than usual. Makes a big difference.

I've been considering picking up a NES or SNES for a while now, but with most of my gaming ressources going towards my MSX collection, it hasn't happened yet.

Anyway, doesn't look like I'll go the Nintendo route anytime soon now that my sister gave me her old Mega Drive II.

It came with a few games too. I guess Aladdin and the Sonic games are real classics. I remember my sister playing Aladdin A LOT. I think I only really played Sonic 2 back in the days, and actually beat the game.

The copy of NBA Jam Tournament Edition is the only game I picked up myself this week. I remember playing that game on PC (and having a lot of fun with it), so I assume it will be just as fun on the Mega Drive.

Anyway, looking out to pick up some more titles. I got my eyes on copies of Bloodlines ("The New Generation" over here in Europe) and Strider.

The only problem right now is that I'm having some trouble finding the channel on my TV. :) I've ordered a 9-pin mini din to SCART cable, but in the meantime I would already like to get this thing to work through the antenna connector. I have a Philips 32PW8651/12 CRT. Anyone got any hints on how I could get this to work?

You're quite safe with that list of games, your sister had good taste / was well advised. They're all god tier platformer, except maybe the Jungle book, which would be just A-tier. I can't say anything about the sports games except that I'm surprised your sister had a football and basketball game.

Go get Sonic 3 to have that proper Sonic 3 & Knuckle experience.
And Sonic because then it would be complete.

Does the (I assume) French Megadrive even work with RF? French consoles usually had some output quirks due to the country being SECAM and SCART only. If I were you I'd be patient and wait for my RGB cable, I wouldn't want to even lay my eyes on ugly RF signal. I have no experience with RF but I assume you would plug it in, start the console then start a channel/frequency search? Anyway that's a nice TV you got there, you should get a Saturn and enjoy some nice widescreen gaming on that :)

World of Illusion. Nice!

I did exactly that, scanned frequencies both automatically and manually, but the TV didn't find the Mega Drive. Ofcourse the console could be broken too (although it used to work and has basically been sitting in a box for years), but at least the power light works... I'll see that when I get the cable in.

I assume the console works with RF, since that's the only cable that came alongside it, and it used to work on an old CRT my parents had back in the days. I'm not in France, btw. Belgium here, and I'm not sure if we have/had the same output quirks as the French. :)

I think my sister got a few games from a friend, which probably explains the sports games.

Thanks for the tips. I'm not getting that Saturn right away though. As said above, collecting for MSX is a really expensive hobby. Mega Drive games cost peanuts in comparison. So until I'm satisfied with my MSX collection, I'm not gonna take on too many other platforms. :)

Hey guys...I figure it works...but...I need to be sure. A video out cable from a Genesis 2/3 will work on the Nomad, correct? Local retro shop has them for $10.

I want to fire this thing up but also want to be sure MUSHA boots up etc before I decide to part with it. :p

Was rummaging through some old stuff at my parents' house and found a Game Gear that must have belonged to my brother. Unfortunately it seems like the power adapter is broken. I got it to turn on with some batteries, but then realized the screen was pretty much dead too. Oh well.

Lots of GGs have bad screens and sound because of the bad capacitors in lots of Game Gears. The problem can be fixed by people able to replace capacitors... and it'll be needed on lots of GGs, given how many have issues.

So last Saturday I went to a game store about half an hour by car from here, which is not considered "local" in this tiny country.

I was going there to pick up Strider mainly, but got a little excited. Ended up picking up these:

So, i figure i'll lay it more out in plain english!

We could either do a decathalon: 10 Sega Genesis games, post scores or whatever the task at hand is, the best players from all 10 games get really nice prizes! (Like, some 20-30 dollar carts, winner chooses, and we go down the list. I'll try to put something special out there for 1st place)

Or, i can just do some regular, one-off challenges, and i can provide single prizes for the winners (maybe not as extravagant, but still some cool oddities and maybe a few uncommon CIB games)

I may also propose this over at SegaAge, but i don't wanna step on other people's toes.

There is an alarming lack of high score challenges in Retro-GAF and GAF in general.

I'd like to be the man to deliver this to all. I mean, i could do something on a grander scale, but i feel if i made a big thread, it would be much harder to give something cool out. I mean, to the random gaffer, a CIB copy of Warsong or Cadash or even just a lot of games could mean nothing, but to you guys, its like a goldmine waiting to be had.

^it totally is! if you do a high score challenge, are you looking to pick common stuff many here have or what do you have in mind?

Alright! I got my SCART cable in, and everything seems to work as it should. No idea why it didn't work with the RF cable on my TV. But now that I can use SCART, who cares?

I tested a few games so far.

I noticed that some games have this 'multicoloured dotted line' (don't have a better term for it) at the bottom. Is this normal?

Wouldn't that be overscan? Maybe check your tv geometry.

That's a common occurrence in Genesis games. That outer edge of the picture tends to get obscured on old CRTs (overscan), but flatpanels show it. Adjust zoom settings if you want to hide it.

I see. Thanks guys!

It's only a few games that seem to have this 'feature'. :) So, as you said, I can indeed just adjust the screen ratio/positioning in such cases.

Inspired by James Rolfe/Mike Matei and a bunch of discussion over at Something Awful, decided to break Toe Jam & Earl back out.

I quite like this game, but man can it get pretty BS at times, what with difficult-to-avoid whirlwinds, faster-than-you enemies and such. Still, I took the SA goons' advice and opened a lot of presents on the lower levels, so I have a pretty good set of identified "good" presents (and at least one "bad" present, the Earthlings) to go off of (helps that the present-identifying carrot guy showed up a fair bit on lower levels, too). Around level 12 in the Fixed Game, right now (I'm going to beat the Fixed Game one of these days...).

^it's my secret favorite roguelike! haha...and yeah that's great advice, honestly if you can get the randomizer identified (most of my $ goes towards this effort) you can take your time trying out the other gifts, but SA's absolutely right that you need to know what all of them are before it starts getting mean.

like Rampage and others, you get this balance later on where you weigh in staying longer (to hunt gifts) with the damage you potentially take, and as the game progresses you largely find yourself just looking for the elevator or the part on that level...until a mole comes around and jacks your shit. i used high-tops a lot, springs on the lower levels cause later there's stuff that they just don't avoid well.

i used to beat this game like every year on the regular...when you get the rocket shoes, don't forget about hidden level 0 in the lower-left corner of the first map!

I actually made an attempt to reach Level 0, but I died on the way down, and my Rocket Shoes didn't wear off fast enough when I did reach it such that I wound up falling right off and back up to Level 9.

I need to make another attempt at some point - I'm assuming the 1Up's still there, since I didn't end up getting it.

I see where some where saying Gunstar isnt all that hard now. Was messing around with it earlier today and happened to try the Homing + Laser weapon combo.

Man thats like an insta-win button. Just shoot it once and hold the shoot button...all you have to do is make sure to dodge when needed and it pretty much wipes the screen clean. I made scrap metal out of Seven Force faster than ever.

Yeah, that's a really powerful combo. Makes the game kind of boring, though.

Yeah im probably going to stay away from it...maybe crank up the difficulty too if there is an option for it. I dont think i've ever checked the options menu for Gunstar.

It's definitely weak damagewise on the harder levels. If you want a good challenge go for the Lightsaber "Fire+ Lighting" on expert. Great damage, and it kills bullets, but a risky weapon overall due to short range - you have to get mad close to your enemies.

Wow, holy crap at that guy trying to sell the 'fake' repro MUSHA on eBay. That same auction was at like $300 the other week and the buyer must have backed out and left feedback accordingly.

I know people have faked GBA Pokemon carts in the past but geez, I never knew this was a thing on Genesis.

I kind of like rapid+homing. It still makes things easy but it's not as broken as lightning+homing

I remember people in the SNES thread saying an English Star Ocean reproduction went for an exorbitant amount on ebay. In the NES thread recently brought up a blatant Little Sampson bootleg as well.

It's definitely not limited to GBA fakes.

How do you guys spot a fake Genesis title? I'm pretty sure I'd be fooled at least until after it got here, unless they get the cover/label art horribly wrong.

From what I've been told it's not that cheap to reproduce a cart. I've been told it costs around €40 to make one. So anything you buy below that amount is maybe a little less suspicious.

I've also been told that in order to be entirely sure whether your cart is fake or not, you have to open it up, and look at the EPROM, see if it's a genuine one.

But I'm completely new to this scene, so this is just my two cents.

You'd have to open the cartridge. First thing to notice is if the cart is sealed with normal Phillips head screws instead of security screws. People making reproductions for themselves tend to replace the screws so they can have an easier access to the innards should they have to. Bootleggers may put the original screws back.

By looking at the PCB you'll see easily if it has been tampered with or not. If there are wires on it, more than one PCB, lousy soldering, etc. If there is a sticker or a hole on a chip, it means it's an eeprom and definitely bootlegged. Check google images to see what I'm talking about, put pictures of yours here if unsure.

Ok. If the only difference is with the innards, I'd probably be content enough to just stay ignorant and assume anything I had is real. If it plays the same, not a big deal to me. If I knew it would annoy me though.

I don't have any I'm suspicious of at the moment, just the talk about fakes being sold made me think about it. If I were to try to buy a high profile game right now, I don't think there's any way I would notice it was a repro until after I was finished paying for it.
