Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

Got a problem that googling around didn't give me any help for. Picked up a model 1 Genesis a week or so ago and it was working fine with the RF cable it came with. Recently ordered one of those "retro-bit" composite cables from ebay to hold me over till I can get a RGB cable, since RF is shit, and things are acting up. I get constant static on the screen even when the system isn't powered on, just plugged in. Get sound and video behind that static when I turn the system on. Was wondering if anyone knows what this is? If it is just a bad cable or if it is something wrong with the system itself.

Other details:
Yes the AV cable is for the model 1 genesis
The power adapter that came with the system is also a "retro-bit" one that feels cheap and has hookups for both Genesis 1 and SNES.
I don't have any other AV cables at the moment to test this out, and the local place I bought the system from didn't have any in stock when they sold it to me.
This problem only happens with the AV cable, not with RF.

Bumping for new page. Halp.

I recently picked up a cart and it has some pretty heavy corrosion on the connectors. The cart still works, so I don't want to take any drastic measures, but it's a Shadowrun cart, so I'd like to try and do as much as possible to save it from having the corrosion spread.

I've tried the typical alcohol swab and eraser methods. Is there anything else I can go to before abrasives? I'd really hate to cause further damage to a functional cart if not absolutely necessary.

Brasso will do better. It can't get all the rust, but it's probably the best inexpensive thing short of abrasives.

Im guessing they'd do Alien Solider as well?

literally one of the most common repros ive seen, yeah....big cult classic, way too expensive given how cheap the genesis scene largely is

for real ill get quotes locally & mail shit if you guys wanna work something out, nintendoage sems low on genny repros so stuff like crusader of centy with a new battery felt like a deal, acclaim cart shell and all haha

Brasso will do better. It can't get all the rust, but it's probably the best inexpensive thing short of abrasives.

again i thought alcohol was the big deal but this right here? metal polish will make you realize how very dirty shit is that looks day 1 clean to you. do not underestimate its potential; any cart you sell/drop before trying this is wasted

i was living in ATL as a kid when i got my first used cart, a 2 or so week old (from launch) copy of Secret of Mana, bundled with the big guide for less than new. shit looked - to this day! - like it was never played, but booting it up recently failed. cleaned with metal polish and BAM there's my maxed-out account from '93, same as it ever was.

Bumping for new page. Halp.

sounds like bum cables, could be wrong though. id tell you to get another pair but honestly? genny puts out RGB natively; get a converter and see the magic, man!

Well, my SOP with cleaning carts is that Brasso is for the really stubborn/really rusted carts. I still like to use alcohol as my first go to method. It's effective for most jobs and It has a quick evaporation rate so you don't have to worry about it getting in places you didn't intend to. Brasso on the other hand, despite how highly effective it is, spreads like warm butter and does not evaporate. When I do use it, I'm careful to keep it only on the contacts, and I make sure to clean it off thoroughly with alcohol so as to not leave any conductive residue behind.

ive only used it a few times, so that's prolly sage advice televators...it's a last resort after alcohol fails, and i read to use said alcohol & then dry q-tips afterwards anyway. its just that, the few carts i used it on? i was blown away by the 5 or so dirty qtips i had after i thought it was clean! i was seriously impressed.

I've finally reunited my collection. It's mostly Genesis but I have some decent Sega CD and Saturn titles to include.

Sorry there's a tad bit of glare in the top right. I didn't see it until after I put everything away but some of the harder to read ones will be Pier Solar, Legend of Wukong from the Genesis shot and Micky Mania, Terminator, Brutal, Wing Commander and Ground Zero Texas from the Sega CD/Saturn shot. I think I'll continue to keep focusing my collection on boxed Genesis titles. I also have the Canadian variant of Sonic 1, which as a Canadian probably isn't that impressive but I thought there are some cool changes none the less.
Nice collection you have there. You have Sega CD games, but I don't see your SCD (1 or 2?) hooked up to your Genesis 2 in the pic. Is it just not hooked up at the moment?

So if I was about to buy 100 boxed Genesis games off craigslist in pretty good shape with a Genesis for $300, would I be getting a good deal? About 40% are sports. there are some good ones in there like Castlevania.

BTW, I have no Genesis games at this point, just about 4 lose carts I had from other pickups

IrishNinja

man at that price...you really gotta list some names off the other 60%, cause that strikes me as high. console by itself gets like $20 or so on CL over here, so for that much change & that many sports titles, i'd have to see some real gems

That is the plan, but currently waiting on that ebay seller to get back to get the rgb cables. Just got these to make sure the av socket was working on the genesis I bought, so that is why this has me worried.

Yeah. I've just got a model 2 but I'm low on space and room on the power bar lol. Plus outside of Sonic CD, that part of my collection isn't as compelling to play.

I hope that you sprung on that without us giving you an answer, because A) it's been sold and B) that's one heckuva lot. Even get a Power Base Converter; those are like $30-50 on their own.

Yeah,

There were some good games in there (even things like genny Flashback). But, there were no pics of the actual system. The fact that the listing was pretty good and said most came with manuals was a good sign.

Also, I been playing a bit of Genesis VC this afternoon. Struggled with Beyond Oasis. I've never made it past a hour over the last few years. Just so damn clunky. Is it worth slogging through the beginning?

Alien Soldier. Man, MAN. Game is pure arcade bliss. Insane graphics. Almost Neo Geo-ish. And such complex play. Really a fantastic game.

Nope, missed it. No big deal. More money set aside for another trip to Japan in 5 weeks.

Oh, ok. I thought it might be broken or something. :p

That's one of the things I like about the model 1 CD is that it stacks up instead of on the side which takes up more space, IMO. The extra power brick is still a problem though.

There was a pic of the system in the description (I only looked at the mobile listing) it was a High Definition Graphics Model 1 Genesis. Looked to be in ok shape.

I still want to pick up Alien Soldier myself. I wanted to get that PS2 Treasure Collection (Gunstar/Dynamite Headdy/Alien Soldier) but I can't find it anywhere.(for a reasonable price). I'd rather have the actual cart itself though it is a bit expensive.

Good memories, bought the Megadrive on release day in England It came with Altered beast, sold my tent and went back into town later that day and picked up Golden axe too, amazing like having an arcade machine at home.

Just started Phantasy Star 2. Really liking it so far, but how does the attack system work? The party just does what you set them to do until you press a button again?

Also I gues the more expensive the weapon is, the better...no matter what? Missing the option to sell items though.

Btw figured i ask here before giving sega age or the bst thread a shot, anyone want to trade their Shining force 1 or 2 for Warsong?

do you have it on auto? you should be setting the commands for everyone, every round if not

typically yes, i know it sucks you cant see the stats beforehand but every new town's armor/weapons are better, i think it was paseo (sp?) that broke my wallet hard & forced some grinding for quality ceramic shit, haha

also you should totally be able to sell your current stuff to offset the cost, have you sorted out how? its been years so perhaps you have to have something new to unequip the old, could be wrong but yeah selling does happen

ps do you have the little guide it came with? you need a visaphone as soon as you get Shir!

How come there hasn't been another series like Phantasy Star? Sci-fi/fantasy with an anime theme. Actually there probably has been but it just hasn't been as good.

Wait for http://www.retrogamecave.com/the-sega-trio.html to restock. Know I'm getting one first sign of it coming back in stock even though I have yet to get a hold of a Sega CD yet.
That looks pretty good, although having it in a power brick format like laptop power adapters/Xbox 360 brick would be even better.

I'm only using two at the moment so it's not a super big problem, but if I hooked up my 32x as well, I'd definitely go for one.

It has a bunch of indepth and really fascinating articles that go through Sega's history until the end of Dreamcast. Bad points are that it needs to be edited for grammar and typos and also has a sometimes annoying perspective from a cultish fanboy.

An excerpt which really sounds like a 10 year old annoyed that his favorite team lost the championship:

Crow all you want. I for one don't care for pyrrhic victories. Whether you like it or not, whether you ever admit it or not, the Sega Genesis was the system to beat. That is something no Nintendo loyalist from the time will ever admit, and the mere thought will forever stick in their craw.

I consider the Genesis to be the greatest gaming console ever made. The games were brilliant and the library was expansive.

I can't tell you how many hours I spend gaming on mine (I still have it), but the games... my oh my the games...

I, like many, began with the original Sonic 1, and over time as my collection grew, I found my favorite game of all time, Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Great levels, music, and even story... yes STORY... IN A SONIC GAME! Not much was said, but you knew exactly what was going on.

And yeah, I've been through all the classics: the Streets of Rage series, Golden Axe, Ecco The Dolphin/Ecco The Dolphin: The Tides of Time (my go-to summer games, so incredible), and the list goes on and on.

And I though I was one of the few people that owned Valis III. ;) If they remake this scene on a next-gen console, just how epic would it be?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ze9gqdQNuIw (1:22 mark and on... BOTTLED EPICNESS)

So is there any real reason to own a 32x other then to just say you have one? Like any decent games on it at all?

Also, blast, just missed out on a Lightening Force auction.

Chaotix, Tempo, 30FPS-but-otherwise-arcade-perfect ports of After Burner and Space Harrier, a better version of Virtua Fighter than the Saturn got, etc.

I don't think any of those convince me to forsake my S-Video mod to get a 32X instead, however.

Yes, the 32X does have some good games. The system only has 40 games, including 6 CD titles, and most of the third-party games are ports, but the first-party library's pretty good. Only a few of the first-party games really aren't good, and even those have some redeeming values, mostly (Chaotix's bonus stages are great, Motocross Championship actually can be fun even if it's mediocre, Cosmic Carnage has a definite "so bad it's good" factor to it...). And others, like Virtua Racing Deluxe, Tempo, Zaxxon's Motherbase 2000 (think Viewpoint, not Zaxxon), Kolibri, Shadow Squadron, Space Harrier, After Burner, Metal Head, and Star Wars Arcade are definitely good (Star Wars Arcade and Metal Head a bit less so than those others, but still, they're not bad.). As fort he third party games, Star Trek Starfleet Academy: Starship Bridge Simulator is interesting; it's an enhanced SNES port, and definitely is the better version of the game. Blackthorne for 32X is good too, and has an exclusive level (though it's expensive). T-Mek's also okay, and is the only console version of that game. Most of the other third party games are just standard multiplatform titles, but I'm sure there are a few more of interest.

The CD games though... they're all just Sega CD live-action-video games with better video quality. Most aren't any good, unless you like Digital Pictures (4 of the 5 US releases are from them).

32X? More like Dirty Poo X, amirite?

People told me the Mortal Kombat 2 port was good, but that's not a game I'll recommend in 2013.

I'm really curious about Tempo.

The crazy thing is that the actual book version of it, contains most of the same grammer errors etc.

Why I'm not really interested. Only game I think I'd like that is only on that system is knuckles chaotix. The other things people mention are "good" ports of games you can play elsewhere.

I presume that version still doesn't have an ending to the Dreamcast article, too? But yeah, it needs sources, and error correction.

I love the Genny as much as the next guy, but don't talk folks into buying a 32x, Falcon. That system sucks on many levels, from getting it to actually work, to the games that range from okay to lol worthy. I like Kolibri and Zaxxon, but almost everything else in the 32x library is forgettable.

I just found a second 32x and it's got the same damn problems as my first one =/. Piece of shit. I only spent $7.50 on it so rather than return it I plan on mounting them like stuffed animal heads and hanging them on my wall.

Anybody know where I can get a replacement power adapter for a Model 2 CD? I ordered one that said it specifically was for that on Amazon and it doesn't even start to fit. Irritating.

32X MK2 is a good point, but yeah, there are a lot of ways to play MK2. It is better than the SNES or Genesis versions, but you can play perfect arcade ports on modern consoles, so yeah... I do have it though, and it's good.

No, of the games I mentioned, Star Wars Arcade, Shadow Squadron, Kolibri, Tempo, Knuckles Chaotix, Zaxxon's Motherbase 2000, Metal Head, Cosmic Carnage, Motocross Championship, and some content in Virtua Racing Deluxe (two of the tracks) are all 32X-exclusive, and T-Mek was arcade/32X/PC only.

I just pulled mine out of storage recently. Should probably keep it with my PS2 cart/box etc, but I'll be honest, I forget if I even own it still.

What were you looking to pay? It is in great shape. I would just assume part it towards a fellow collector before throwing it out there on eBay etc. I saw it going for $40 on Amazon...LOL...seems ridiculous.
