Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

Ah I see. I get what you're saying. Well, I still doubt anyone who originally got the 1st version bought it just to re-sell it later on for $300. Tat would make them kinda crazy. heh. Though I guess I can see some people buying the re-releases just to re-sell them latter for high value. :/

Speaking of Pier Solar... I really need to start playing it. :lol. I've had it for so long, but barely played it so far. My original Genesis had issues with sound, so could never use it. I played the demo back in 2008 and that is literally the farthest I've gotten. Last time I got stuck early on and then forgot where to go. I need to restart.

It may not be the case in 2008, but now, which those homebrews selling for more than US$ 300 on ebay, I guess a lot of pre-orders for upcoming homebrews are just from people who want to re-sell later.

Nah, I am just being grumpy because I did not buy the game at the right time...

They are not. The cover is different, and even it says "Reprint Edition" in big letters.

Well, I guess it is a reward to the ones who really pre-order the game, but it inflates the price of the original print.
Doesn't the first print also come in a cardboard type box like later Genesis games. The reprint comes in a plastic clamshell case, like standard Genesis/MD games. I have the reprint edition.

Yeah, that is true. The first print also has several different versions, one each for Genesis (red bar style I believe), Megadrive (Europe), and Megadrive (Japanese) case design styles. The reprint has only one version, which is a more generic style. I do like that plastic case though! That's the version I have.

Oh? The reprint doesn't look like this?

Thinking back. I have no idea how I heard about the game in the first place. I wasn't on twitter, no gaming forums. Well maybe IGN forums at that point, but didn't hear it from there.

Weren't they planning an XBLA version of Pier Solar?
Yeah, was part of their kickstarter thing, along with Wii U, PSN (I think), Dreamcast and I think PC and possible others.

The reprint edition looks like this:

It has the plastic hardshell case and it also doesn't come with the enhanced soundtrack CD.
They do offer the songs for free to DL and burn your own CD from a link in their forums I believe. I got the enhanced soundtrack CD when I bought the Pier Solar soundtrack. It came with it.

For some reason my Sega CD soundtrack doesn't work on my Sega CD. It will play the background music/sounds whereever I am, but then after 11 seconds will make a loud noise and start over. And repeat.

I went to their website and downloaded the cd audio from them, I'll eventually burn it to a CD and try that to see if that works.

Many of the discs were defective (or it's your sega cd, depending on who you believe), hence the image uploaded to their website.

So, I'm thinking of buying a PAL version of Zero Wing.

Judgement in my game tastes aside, should it work on my NTSC Genesis? It's Model 1, had the cable that could output stereo with the headphone jack (before my rabbits destroyed said headphone jack, may they RIP), but it doesn't say Hi-Def graphics on top.

I'm looking everywhere, but I'm getting mixed answers, wiki saying it won't work, forum-goers from 2010 saying it should work.

Can I get a yes or no before I drop $15?

It will play in 50hz most likely wont it? Unless you have a region switch I don't think it'll work. I could possibly be wrong though.

Also I came across a local 3do original model for $50. They said it works and showed a pic of it booting the "Welcome to the Real World" screen. Don't know if that means it works, or when people say they break they mean they just won't boot games. Is $50 a decent price on it? No games but has all the cables and a controller.

I like 3DOs more than most people so I might've said yes...
But the original tray-loading FZ-1 is unreliable. I wouldn't pick up a second-hand one without testing it myself. If it were the later top-loading FZ-10 model on the other hand I'd be more comfortable recommending it for long-term use too.

Sounds a lot like Sega CD Model 1s versus Model 2s. Personally went for a Model 2 since they're more reliable and less prone to breaking, but them Model 1s are sexy.

$50 is a pretty good decent price I think, but yeah, you'd want to know that it works. The FZ-1 is much better than the Goldstar, but yeah, probably isn't as reliable as the FZ-10 (toploader).

Ok, I need your help guys.

I bought the Sega Genesis Classics packs 4 and 5 on Steam the other day. I intend on playing the Phantasy Star games, but I'm somewhat intimidated on trying PS2 because I keep reading the game is frustratingly difficult. I also know people consider PS3 the weak link of the original 4 games.

So what do you think. Should I give PS2 and 3 a try, or should I go directly to 4? Will I miss much if I start in 4?

Also, Shining Force 1 or 2?

I know most people like to shit on Streets of Rage 3's soundtrack, but if you're one of the creeps like me who loves it, I just ran across some new live stuff by SoR3 co-composer Motohiro Kawashima. Great FM-sounding tunes!

Part 1
Part 2

Incidentally, Kawashima's stuff in the SoR3 soundtrack is actually the more listenable, melodic half of the soundtrack. Koshiro's half is typically the more frog-jumping-on-keyboard half of it.

Welp, just dropped the money down for it, and it should arrive between July 8 and 10. I'll report back with my findings. If it doesn't work, I'll see if I can invest in a cheap second model 1 to tinker with and make region free (my current Genesis has sentimental value, given to me by my Uncle, and I don't want to break it).

Just moved back to my hometown. I've got to get the rest of my collection out of storage butI had ordered some ebay games before I left and did some hunting at the flea market and the local retro store yesterday.

HNwA3LG.jpg

eBay: Shadow Dancer, Ghouls 'n Ghosts.
Flea Market: Doom Troopers (slight label damage), Air Diver.
Local Store: Exodus, Gaiares, Game Genie.

I should be able to post pictures of my whole Genesis collection later tonight.

Just won a copy of Contra Hard Corps for $13.49 shipped on eBay for the girlfriend. We're both stoked to play it in RGB on our new monitor :D

I loved PS2 when it came out. However, I had a ton of free time, and most importantly, that fat hint book of maps that came with it. I never would have finished the game without that. It's a brutal game.

I also waited impatiently for PS3 to arrive, only to be disappointed.

My love for Contra 3 is endless. I never had a Genesis/MD as a kid, but in retrospective Hard Corps (especially the JP version) is probably the better game.

goddamn that's a good price for Hard Corps, i struggled to find it for twice that at one point! congrats

It's a loose copy, but I'm still happy with the price. Now just need to come across a few more before I have most of what I want for genesis. Dynamite Headdy, Ristar, and Steets of Rage 3 being the main ones I'm looking out for. After that I'd be happy with an Everdrive for playing hard to find/ overly expensive games.

Contra 3 is such a great game but the overhead stages do nothing for me. I otherwise love the game, but I don't like the change of pace in those levels.

Genesis Ghouls N Ghosts seems even more challenging than Super.

I love/hate that game. Beat it and then immediately sold it as I *never* want to make the mistake of playing through it again (during which I will not stop until I beat it). Great game but waaaay difficult.

I just got a complete copy here. I remember it being ultra hard when I was a teenager. Now with less reflexes and aging, I doubt that I will manage to beat it, but I have to try.

lol, I assumed my Genesis had something wrong with its audio due to an annoying hum, turns out I just had to swap my AC adaptor with my Famicom's (which was using a 9v when it was supposed to be using 10v). Sounds nice and clean now.

Next game I'm playing is probably Alisia Dragoon. Seems cool from the one attempt I made last night, didn't realize it had limited continues.

I had a 3rd-party multi SNES/SFC/NES/Gen AC adapter and experienced the same humming issue a few years ago lol.

Alisia Dragoon is great. Good challenge and I love the soundtrack.

I wonder if Taromaru plays anything like it. Not that I should be buying a game that expensive though, lol.

Same here, except I agree with the US version's lack of a life bar. Invincible slide tackle makes it pretty fair.

Overhead stages in Contra 3 were pretty easy, so it only served as filler and eye candy back when mode 7 was a big deal. I see why they included them and erred on the side of making them easy, but yeah, they don't really hold up.

I have to admit i never liked those levels either. Level 3 is GOD though :)

Wasn't the GBA port a mix between Contra 3 and Hard Corps?

I believe so; I remember the contemporaneous magazine reviews stating as such. The original monochrome Game Boy version of Alien Wars stripped the overhead bits too. I wonder how that turned out?
