Selling review code

Yeah, I'm not supposed to am I? It's old Xbox 1 code, for about four games. I usually have this everywhere, but all that I kept with me is a few games.

I was thinking of Ebaying them, but I think the whole Microsoft Confidential on the front of them means that I...shouldn't.

It's Panzer Dragoon Orta, Splinter Cell, Mortal Kombat and TimeSplitters 2. Review code for the original Xbox versions.

What's your guys take on this?

Never seen review code that wasn't marked NOT FOR RESALE or wasn't implied as such.

I wouldn't do it, though in the case of those games I don't think it matters much outside of principle.

Are you high?

No you can't ebay them.

So I can pick up all those games at EB for 15 bucks all together. You are gonna get 10 bucks from them at best (shipping, ebay charges and etc).

And you are willing to take that kind of risk for $10? How much would it take for you whack somebody? $50? $65? 99.99?

Is it any different to the retail code, anyway?

From what I understand, the review build of Panzer Dragoon Orta contains a remake of Panzer Dragoon Saga that was cut from the retail version of the game.

Dumb question: What is this review code?

Review games sent to the media that usually have no manual or proper cases and is just the disk in a jewel case or similar and it has big "NOT FOR RESALE" stickers slapped over it and printed on the CD

Even retail Xbox and Xbox 360 games say "Confidential Unpublished Work.

Check it out on any game if you don't believe.

Review code is basically a build of the game that the publishers have OK'd for game journalists to review. However, due to the process of submission to first parties and the time a game takes to physically manufacture, there will sometimes be bugs still in the review code that the publisher will note that will be fixed in the final retail copies.

This is more of a major issue for magazines, as they have to get out review code earlier to them due to lead times that it takes to publish a magazine.

In any case, it's extremely unethical and illegal to sell review code.

Thank you (and VOOK) for the answer.

I've never heard of him, but if he would be a better analogy then please provide a link.

Google is your friend. But since you haven't done that, think Microsoft employee who sold pirated Microsoft software to the tune of $9M.

As a rule, don't do it. Sure, you might get some cash for it, but if you get caught, you'll be in a shitload of trouble.

you can "give" it to a friend and they can let you "borrow" money indefinitely for it.

but seriously, it says not for resale on it for a reason......

I understand that it's generally unacceptable, but the examples you're using are flawed.

The two cases refer to, for example, a guy who sold $9 million worth of software, which doesn't really compare to four games from a last generation, out of production console.

And then there's the pre-release prototype preview code (for example, Sonic Xtreme) that gets sold for thousands of dollars, and yet you guys don't seem to be bothered about that, even though it's of far greater magnitude.

Am I missing something?

Yes, that multiple people have told you it's illegal. But hey, go ahead. Microsoft reps read this board, and I'm sure you'll find a 'buyer' quick enough.

It's illegal not to mention damaging for media-publisher relations, and I cannot fathom why anyone would take a risk like this for a few bucks.

Are you a professional journalist?

How did you receive the code?

.

Most of the review code that we get can only be played on special debug units.

Doesn't that mean these disks would be unusable for most folks?

This thread is the worst condemnation of game journalism I've ever seen...

Why? We don´t even know if he is journalist and everyone here is telling him that this is illegal and stupid.

Show me that "condemnation" you are talking.

If he is, than it's sufficient evedence to say that a retard could be a game journalist. He implies he is, but I'm not really sure he is. But, boy, if he is...

On second thought, I think you should totally Ebay it. Bubba sure has a couple of "games" he will want you to review.

By that logic, people as Janet Cooke or Stephen Glass would "condemn" jurnalism as a whole.

Generalizing doesn´t go anywhere.

It´s illegal, no matter how old is it. Don´t do it.
Thread didn't need to go any further than this.

Morals of this story:

1. Don't sell review code
2. Don't post stupid topics asking if you should sell review code

There's something I don't get:

Just what is so "unethical" about selling review code? Isn't it similar to selling a retail copy of the game except for the fact that you got the game free because of your profession?
