all good things
I've had him since I was 13 and since I'm 26 now I guess he's been here for half of my life. His health had been declining and when we took him to the vet the blood test showed his kidneys were failing but the vet said they weren't really far along so we had hopes he'd live another year with a different diet. That was 2 weeks ago and since then he had gotten quite a bit worse. He hadn't been able to walk really without me giving him support for a few days and yesterday he couldn't even sit his body up. I'd just pick him up when he needed to go to the bathroom and help him sit up to get water.

Anyway, I thought he was going to die last night and I was going to get him put down today but I couldn't bring myself to do it. He never really cried and I wasn't sure if he was suffering... I hope he wasn't suffering. I was going to take him tomorrow though if he had lived through the night.

I laid on the floor with him around 8 and we just looked at one another in the eyes and I told him to just let go over and over and tried to sooth him. He motioned a few times like he wanted to lick me but he couldn't do it. An hour and a half later he started to convulse and I just went over to him and put my hand on his head and within 30 seconds or so he was gone. I gave him a kiss on his head, picked him and moved him out to the back porch until I dig a hole to bury him in.

Its only been 2 hours since then and It's just not going to be the same without him, he was truly my best friend. I started having problems with depression and anxiety when I first got him and things got really bad in my early 20s so hes been there with me through it all.

I didn't think it was going to hit me this hard.

I'm going to miss you so much Rocky. I love you.

I lost my 14 rear old dog back before Christmas :( It's tough. Sorry to hear that.

Feel free to post more pictures. I think finding and posting pictures of my dog really helped me.

Wow I teared reading that. My cat of 18 yrs old died last month and im still not over his death

My condolences

Oh boy. That was a bit of a tough read.
I know how tough it can be to lose a loved pet.
It sounds like both your lives were better for having known each other though.
Sorry for your loss, man.

I'm so sorry for your loss. My cat (who was 16 and I adopted him when he was a kitten) died two days after Christmas and his change of health was pretty quick too. I still cry from time to time over his death.

I think it's important to know that even from reading the OP, it sounds like your dog was pretty awesome and loved you lots. You gave him a good life and he was happy.

happened to me this past week, its been tough but we just gotta move on, remember the good times and how we loved our dogs which were our companions in our good times and our bad times.

I'm so sorry.

For what it's worth, him having his best friend with him up until the end is the best way it could have happened. We, and our pets, should all be as lucky.

RIP to your dog man. Can't imagine it since I never had a pet so I can never even imagine experiencing this.

side note: I tripped the FUCK OUT when I clicked this thread. The person in that first picture looks exactly like me. Like....enough to trip me out. Almost identical. Makes it double sad!

Losing a pet from your child definitely is rough, its like one your last remaining keys to a simpler time. When you didnt have to worry bills, life or whatever bothers you. In the past 2 years I've lost all 3 of family pets from my childhood. All 3 lived long lives like the op dog did. So for that I am thankful, but I tell you what. My last childhood dog died about 2 weeks before I visited my family for thanksgiving. That house sure felt empty without my bootsie roaming the house.

Rocky, you brave, courageous hero. You have changed one life irrevocably for the better. May your legacy burn as bright as the love you instilled in this man. Rest easy.

Sorry to hear that. I got my dog when I was 6 years old, and I had to put him down two years ago. Hardest day of my life. Growing up as an only child, he was like a brother to me. I miss him so much.

13 years . . . that is a good life for a dog. You have served him well. And I know he has provided with with much joy, comfort, and companionship.

That's what dogs do. They truly are . . . Man's best friend. Goodbye, Rocky.

*all teary*

Thanks again guys. I'm not really sure what else to say but I think I'm going to go lay down.

He used to sit in a chair that's in the room I'm in right now and it doesn't seem right not hearing him breathe while I'm on here.

I'll be okay though.

This story in particular touched me when it comes to the loss of a pet since being here on NeoGaf. I've never experienced this before, and it's one of my biggest concerns before I get some dogs this year. I'm sorry for your loss OP...

Very sorry about your loss. I lost my beloved Beagle of 14 years last year, also. It was very hard, but they never really leave your heart and memory. All we can ever be is grateful to have spent the time we did with them while they were here.

I am so sorry, man. My heart goes out to you.

I just recently got a dog off of my friend, who couldn't take care of him anymore. He's a really hyperactive chihuahua that knew me from when I would go over her house and hang out with her. I don't know what I will do when his time comes... that scares me so much.

Both my dogs are getting old and I still can't handle just the idea of them not being around.

I'm sorry for your loss, he looks like a such wonderful friend.

I had a similar situation with my dog he was with me for about 20 years. It never gets easy because a dogs friendship is a honest and loving one. But those good memories will be what you remember most
