Sony E3 2012 Conference Thread

Pretty bad conference and all the surprises leaked. No idea why they allocated so much time to Wonderbook.

True, not the right venue for so much time on that. But I thought it was interesting. I'm not sure where it will go post-Potter, though? It's a nice bit of star power to launch a platform with, though - if that's what it's going to be. Just a shame they couldn't scoop a similar level of big-name firepower for a certain other platform that ought to be slightly more 'core'...

I didnt have buyers remorse about Vita until now. I didn't entertain the possibility they'd have nothing to fucking show.

Mind boggling that SCE themselves had nothing really new to show here, or nothing significant, for Vita. Someone really needs to ask Sony straight up about what's going on here. I was hoping we might see Media Molecule's game.

Wonderbook

Basically books that are augmented reality. Like they demoed a spell book and how you could pretend to be doing magic and stuff. Talked about educational books etc

How odd. Is it not a bit late to start pushing edutainment stuff for Eyetoy?

So far I am happy that I did not stay up until 3:00am to watch the conference. I did not look at any news this morning but watched the conference like I would have watched it live. First of all I believe that Sony > MS not by much but that would be my current ranking.

I did like GoW, Beyond, Last of Us, AC3 PS3/Vita and also Sony All-Star Battle looked quite fun. I also will end up buying some if not all of those games but that E3 really lacked some WOW moment this year and I fear that without much support and a price drop the Vita will end up being the PSP of its generation. Maybe I just have too high expectations but so far I am not really impressed by the bigged game show in the world.

So Sony didn't announce anything big for Vita, I thought Yops had said they learnt their lesson with PSP?

The Last of Us and AC3 looked amazing.

The one thing I got from that conference was that Sony simply had nothing to show. Nothing from Sucker Punch or Guerrilla and almost no Vita footage whatsoever. I don't think Sony wants to lose the Vita, but they are trapped because in 18 months time they are going to be releasing the PS4 and need to withold something for its launch.

Even still, the almost total lack of Vita presence was hugely disappointing.

Also, biggest shitty reality of them all, nothing mentioned about a US Tokyo Jungle release.

Spots dedicated to Gravity Rush, localized Tokyo Jungle, Final Fantasy X remaster (and maybe a digital, localized Final Fantasy Type-0), and maybe even Soul Sacrifice seem like a hell of a lot in the context of what was shown. The problem is that there was no attention put on Japanese games. I don't know what that means for the Vita in the west ultimately.

So after this press conference does anybody know what on earth is Sony's plan for Vita? "Pretend that it never existed" does not count :P

It is really hard to say though honestly the situation isn't unexpected. Sonys 1st parties like ND have openly said we wont work on Vita. 3rd Parties remember the PSP all too well and arent gonna commit so it leaves Vita in a very bad spot.

The groups willing to work on it are very Japanese and make stuff the western market wont touch

absolute shit, all of it.

vita is done. sony should just pull the plug psp go style, salvage games that are in a lengthy development phase for psn/ps3 and be done with handhelds.

1. Dump all the money hat budget into Call of Duty Vita and Assassin's Creed.
2. Pretend that CoD Vita will make it for the holidays.
3. Attempt to use the attention that these two titles will draw to convince 3rd parties to come on board.
4. When that fails, show third parties the boosted install numbers after both games have hit the console in what, Feb 2013? and hope that they come over in droves.
5. Meanwhile, wait for people to find out that revenue models for iOS and Android games are actually pretty damn risky. Thus Vita package/download might be a better alternative.

I think that's about everything.

I just hope the system survives until the Senko no Ronde sequel comes out in Japan.

So if I subscribe now can I get in on this PS+ 12 free games deal? I've got to keep my subscription up to date in order to play the games in the future, right? Does it also apply to UK subscribers?

I'm starting to think I'm the only one that genuinely enjoyed the god of war demo. Nothing groundbreaking but damn if that doesn't look gorgeous still and a hell of a fun time.

A gradual transition from first-class platform in its own right, to exemplary Playstation Mobile client, with bits and bobs of premium Vita-only content punctuating things from time to time. A future iteration of Playstation Mobile will encompass Vita content to date, and 'Vita' will just be a iPod Touch style device in the wider PS Mobile ecosystem rather than a significant platform in isolation.

Well, that's the future I can see happening sooner than I'd have otherwise expected if Sony doesn't more aggressively compete to justify Vita as a fully-fledged standalone platform in the vein of PSP or prior dedicated handhelds. But there's not much sign of that..? So I could see the Mobile strategy overtaking it in the next couple of years and Sony quietly entwining them.

there were a few older games on the list( infamous 2, Killzone 3) but I don't get why they would show Syphon Filter as old as it is unless they are making a new one.

its on the screen right before the God of War demo.

Well played ubisoft you won e3 so far

Glad i didnt stay up for sony now, maybe next year i'll skip e3 streams alltogether & find out the news the following day.

Nintendo, what you got?

It actually makes me wonder whether there is a bit of infighting between SCEJ and SCEA/E right now. I cannot believe that they would pad out a 90 minute conference with talking and Wonderbook shit when they actually have anticipated Vita games to show. Perhaps they were worried about how the Vita would demo on stage?

Part of me has to wonder what SCEA's hardware guy, John Koller was on, when he said at CES that between the two platforms, Vita and PS3, E3 would bring more excitement for the former than the latter.

CES was before the Western launch right? Maybe at the time there was a lot of interest in Vita from the big publishers, then it launched and that interest cooled.

look at the sales numbers for Vita. What sane developer is going to want to contribute any funds to a game on that sinking ship?

I am not surprised at all. Vita is the best handheld in concept, but the worst selling, so nobody cares about how good it is in theory.

Sony's conference though just really shows how behind the eight ball they are. They're simply not ready to compete anymore, and the longer they wait to find their footing, the more and more impossible it will be for them to come back. They always fund some interesting games, but that's not enough. They need system sellers.

Maybe Sony saved the big megaton for today to take the spotlight from Nintendo.

~_~

I can picture it now. It will be like some wrestling run-in where Sony's entrance music hits in the middle of Miyamoto's presentation of the latest Mario game... and out walks Kutaragi and Kaz strutting in and mocking the Nintendo fans in the crowd like 'heels' and carrying with them the PS4 secretly developed by Kutaragi in his basement alone over the last 5 years. :p

Just finished watching this. Really liked it, ten times better than Microsoft's conference. Particularly liked The Last of Us and Beyond trailers, and to a lesser decree I also liked and playstation all stars and the God of War demonstration and Assasins Creed footage. Wonderbook was also interesting to see.

I thought their show was okay. Nothing crazy. First party looked great as usual. Vita showing really bummed me out as a Vita owner. Wonderbook seems like a neat idea for young families but not for me. PS + has me tempted but I don't think I'll bite.

I really don't get why Sony would put so much effort into the PS3 anymore. I mean they could have saved TLOU and GOW to next gen. It's really foolish publishing so many games in PS3's last year before a the new console.

Wonderbook was shit. Abysmal Vita show. I hope there are some unannounced games waiting to be unveiled when E3 starts and during the week.

Oh I must have missed them announcing when the PS4 is coming...

If Guerrilla or MM (or both!) are working on PS3 stuff, it makes me wonder about a 2013 release for PS4.

Maybe Sony is just thinking about dear Europe, which probably has two more Christmases to go before PS4.

So what did Sony announce? This is as bad as the Microsoft conference.

'announcing' games we already know about. fucking hell.

Just done catching up. Decent conference. Beyond looked pretty, last of us looked like a more sweary uncharted with less ammo

The 'cross controller' threw me a bit though. Looked like their attempt at a wiiU spoiler, but they didn't really go into enough detail. Maybe just testing the waters with one title for now, but two player multiplayer, with separate viewpoints on ps3/vita sounds quite wiiU-ish, plus the whole 'use vita as enhanced controller for ps3’

They should have secured more PS Vita titles...I was expecting them to kinda save Vita in E3, oh well now it's up to Japanese games in TGS I guess. At least give me a reason to touch my PS Vita :(

Other than that, GOW and The Last Of Us are looking really great. Not to mention Beyond too, loving how the PlayStation has so many different kind of genres for their exclusive games.

Oh and ACIII looking mighty fine too!

People are out of their minds if they say this conference was "dog shit" and worst of E3.

-ACIII looked amazing, Vita version nice too
-Beyond looked very interesting
-Last of Us, great
-God of War, awesome
-PS+ free games, thank you very much
-PS1 classics finally announced
-Wonderbook, ok the demo went on waaaaay too long but this idea is neat.

Only downside was the lack of Vita stuff

We agree. I have finished watching it a little time ago and was really surprised to see the reaction from gaf.

I think the conference was alright apart from the insanely long Wonderbook demo. And why are people surprised there wasn't any announcement for new games? Haven't we learned this from the past E3s? It seems new games gets announced in game-magazines like Gameinformer/Famitsu and then gets shown at E3/TGS.

I would have loved to see a lot more from Vita though. :/

I 100% blame SCEA for their lack on interest in the Vita. Jack should fucking fired for not supporting a Sony platform (handheld). SCEJ will lead the way for Vita, and hopefully SCEE would put more effort into the Vita. Isn't both Guerrilla, and MM are developing for the vita? SCEE also released U:GA, WhipEout, and LD. So they are showing some interest not like fucking SCEA.

Honestly I was kind of shocked at their conference. It honestly felt over before it even began. Beyond and The Last of Us looked great, as did the ship battles in Assassin's Creed III, but honestly...It was just kind of meh all around which is surprising for them.

Where was the Vita? Yeah AC3 Liberation, cool. What else? Oh a CoD game, what, no trailer or screens? Oh that's the Vita done for tonight? Well er...okay...

Wonderbook looked neat and having JK Rowling onboard was pretty cool, but that segment took up way too much time. Could of devoted most of it to much needed Vita exposure. Does that thing have any games for it again?

No announcements, a lot of stuff for games we already knew about. What about that cloud gaming deal? False?

Though I guess I would of felt better towards it if I didn't already know about Beyond/Ellen Page and Nathan/Big Daddy for PlayStation Battle Royale. But even then I don't think that could of saved it.

Still, I'd rate it 2nd place out of the 4 from yesterday. Says a lot about this year's E3 so far...

How does this help Sony? I don't understand the mentality behind free games. It's awesome for consumers, but I feel it's bad for Sony as a company. Especially with their current state of affairs.

Lots of people already online. Get them used to subscribing with first party games for free which are probably past their sale prime now so is cheap to offer. Get them hooked ready for PS4 next year.
