Sony E3 2012 Conference Thread

I 100% blame SCEA for their lack on interest in the Vita. Jack should fucking fired for not supporting a Sony platform (handheld). SCEJ will lead the way for Vita, and hopefully SCEE would put more effort into the Vita. Isn't both Guerrilla, and MM are developing for the vita? SCEE also released U:GA, WhipEout, and LD. So they are showing some interest not like fucking SCEA.
SCEA should stay focused on PS3 just like they have been.

U:GA was SCEA bra
Unit 13 by Zipper was also from SCEA

I really don't get why Sony would put so much effort into the PS3 anymore. I mean they could have saved TLOU and GOW to next gen. It's really foolish publishing so many games in PS3's last year before a the new console.

Wonderbook was shit. Abysmal Vita show. I hope there are some unannounced games waiting to be unveiled when E3 starts and during the week.

They are trying to grab as much cash as possible in the last year of production and AAA exclusives with the quality of these titles is the best way to do it. But your are right, imagine TLOU on a true next-gen machine.

People are out of their minds if they say this conference was "dog shit" and worst of E3.

-ACIII looked amazing, Vita version nice too
-Beyond looked very interesting
-Last of Us, great
-God of War, awesome
-PS+ free games, thank you very much
-PS1 classics finally announced
-Wonderbook, ok the demo went on waaaaay too long but this idea is neat.

Only downside was the lack of Vita stuff

Yeah, I really can't comprehend people saying it was bad, when MS was going they said, "Where are the games?!" and we get 90% games and people shit on it and say it was just as bad and how E3 this year is in the shitter.

I enjoyed it, yes, the Wonderbook thing went on too long but at least it has a place in the conference.

From tomorrow, Plus subscribers will be able to grab Stranger’s Wrath HD, inFamous 2, MotorStorm: Apocalypse, LittleBigPlanet 2, Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown, Renegade Ops, Chime Super Deluxe, Outland, Darksiders, and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine.

I agree, MS conference was fucking worse. Apps, seriously? Smartglass? That shit will bomb.

Oh and SCEA can go eff themselves. I hated them during PS2 and I still hate them now.

A gradual transition from first-class platform in its own right, to exemplary Playstation Mobile client, with bits and bobs of premium Vita-only content punctuating things from time to time. A future iteration of Playstation Mobile will encompass Vita content to date, and 'Vita' will just be a iPod Touch style device in the wider PS Mobile ecosystem rather than a significant platform in isolation.

Well, that's the future I can see happening sooner than I'd have otherwise expected if Sony doesn't more aggressively compete to justify Vita as a fully-fledged standalone platform in the vein of PSP or prior dedicated handhelds. But there's not much sign of that..? So I could see the Mobile strategy overtaking it in the next couple of years and Sony quietly entwining them.

I legitimately think you're right and this is an active strategy. They barely acknowledged Vita's existence but then spent a bit of time explaining PlayStation Mobile and their new hardware partnership. I think they're actually listening to analysts and choosing to focus on smartphones and tablets, and because they have that to fall back on aren't afraid of throwing Vita under the bus for a year.

I wonder if that's the true explanation for that rumored Gaikai/OnLive deal. Vita games on all PlayStation Certified devices, with streaming for those that aren't powerful enough to run them natively.

Wonder book was painful, but it's traditional for Sony to spend some time on pointless meandering 'futur tech' demos. I kind of like them for at least trying new things.

There were a couple of things I liked about Sony's conference but a lot of things I didn't. What I liked the most was that they mostly stayed away from showing video montages – that was pretty surprising.

Nothing for Vita is pretty much the biggest let down for me. We get one Assassin's Creed 3 game but it doesn't seem like that's a game Ubisoft is really focusing on. It's made by a developer that isn't known to put out high quality products and while they could potentially make a great game, I just don't want to get my hopes up. Previous installments of Assasin's Creed on portables were just not good and what we've seen doesn't really indicate that it's a 'full' experience.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 for Vita was weird. Less than six months until the game is supposed to release and they can't show anything at all? That's not good. When one team is able to show a lengthy gameplay demo and the other team is not able to show anything then that's incredibly bad. Not even a teaser trailer, no screenshots. Nothing.

Besides, we've known about AC and a Call of Duty game prior to the conference so there was absolutely nothing new here.

The announcement of PSOne Classics was also really weird. Seemed to me like not all games were going to work and the fact that they can't even give a release date just makes me think they don't really know what they're doing. How can a emulator that was announced back when the handheld was called NGP not be ready yet? That's just not good.

Nothing about Vita firmware updates that would finally allow my PS3 to properly communicate with the device.

What they've shown for the PS3 was okay. The Last of Us was good but the presentation was not as outstanding as the Uncharted 2 was a few years ago. They spent way too much time on the Wonderbook game that no one in the audience or at home cares about. The game might be fun to kids and relevant to parents but these people are not the target audience of E3.

I also didn't see much of Sony's 'One Sony' strategy. I kind of expected that they'd announce there to be one store for all western regions (like Xbox Live) though that seems to be wishful thinking at this point. No re-design of the PS Store was also a let-down. The PS+ announcement was not bad but also not what I expected. Ignoring Vita completely is obviously not good. It didn't have to be free games but cloud saving or something like that would have been really nice.

Yeah I certainly don't think it was awful by any means. The PS3 side of things along with services like PSN plus were fine. The problem was the overly long game demos for Far Cry and the spell book thing.

I was shocked though by the Vita side of things too. I expected much more- not even a short teaser for COD or Bioshock? No Killzone? No FFX HD for Vita? Hardly anything infact. Certainly glad I never purchased a Vita now, as it feels like it is going to struggle to get itself going now.

No streaming services either? Guess that was never true in the first place?

Only negatives where wonderbook and farcry 3 imo. They did an ok job. Gaf is too critical. There are other events for sony to announce their games.

Problem is wonderbook was the 33,333% of the conference.
A thing without future (like Eyepet, eye of judgement) and just a little related with videogames. That on the "super bowl" of the videogames is, at least, sad.

That is baffling indeed. All there demos where long. They need to shorten them and move one. Sony has a ton of content to show but instead bloated the other games times to lengthen the show.

So if I subscribe now can I get in on this PS+ 12 free games deal? I've got to keep my subscription up to date in order to play the games in the future, right? Does it also apply to UK subscribers?

it is crazy good deal... i would have never go ps+ since lately i dont have time for games but for small monthly sub you get 3 real games this month alone?

yes, you can play them as long as your sub is active...if you cancel sub and re-sub 10 months from then, you will again be able to play games you got for "free" while you had active subscription.

this is best deal in console gaming, ever.

to get JKR behind it they probably had to give them enough media exposure...

Other than that, Last of us looked freaking amazing.

Exactly how I felt. I didn't need an hour long presentation on that shit. Especially when half the time the people couldn't get the gestures right. I hope Jack Tretton was backstage doing shots thinking "why the fuck did I let them on the stage?"

If they would have replaced Wonderbook with more Vita / PS+ stuff, it would have been a much better conference.

Still, seeing The Last of Us made the whole thing worth it, and I think I'm really gonna enjoy PS All Stars.

I really like the free games with PS+. I think it will get a lot of people to jump on board. Still, I think they really should have announced some sort of plan for PS+ on the Vita. Anything to help the Vita along will be good. I can't believe how much they ignored it at the conference. Fucking shocking. If it didn't have Uncharted, WipeOut, and Hot Shots Golf; I would regret owning the thing.

Had to go to bed after the conference, but I'll recap my thoughts now the thread's moving at a more modest pace. It's safe to say that those sugar coating this conference aren't going to be happy with me.

It was as bad as Microsofts.

- Beyond. Now I enjoyed Heavy Rain. I might've enjoyed a gameplay presentation of Beyond. As it is we got what amounted to nothing more than a cutscene, and a trailer filled with cutscenes. We were also expected to draw amazement at Ellen Page, but quite honestly it doesn't do anything for me. There are plenty of actresses who could've done a stellar job, and at least then I won't be watching them thinking about Juno and Inception.

- AC3. We saw it at Ubisoft just 2 hours prior. Sure it was a different demo, but I'd already had my AC3 quota for the day.

- Far Cry 3. Same as AC3. Just seen it. And this demo looked terrible.

- Battle Royale. Creatively bankrupt ripoff centring around a weak cast of characters. My impressions of this are as low as they were when the game was announced.

- 30 minute void where I wanted to tear my eyes out. Was more grinding than the Microsoft conference because at least they moved at a good speed, so even though I don't give a shit about hockey, I wasn't stuck watching it for 20 minutes.

- God of War. If someone said it was DLC for God of War 3 nobody would dispute it. Fact. Sums up how apathetic I was towards it, and that's as someone who thought God of War 3 was a decent game and nothing more. I'm certainly not clamouring to return to the franchise with this.

- The Last of Us. Amazing. Fantastic demonstration with great pacing and genuine tension.

Why is anyone surprised by the lack of megatons?

It is probably advantageous to avoid a megaton completely. I know it sucks for us, but E3 is about watching the games you love, not to be "shock and awed". It is for the mainstream press. I am happy we saw footage of the Last of Us, Beyond, God of War Ascension, and the Battle Royale Vita announcement.

The faster you can accept that, the less delusional some of you will be.

You sound like a nintendo fan doing the gamecube days.

That dude from sony said point blank that it was for the fans and this was their superbowl. I don't want to hear it.

I really don't get why Sony would put so much effort into the PS3 anymore.
PS3 is the breadwinner because it sells software (unlike Sony handhelds)

I mean they could have saved TLOU and GOW to next gen. It's really foolish publishing so many games in PS3's last year before a the new console.
Good luck with that

Straight from the horse's mouth:PS3 kind of mid-stream (Earnings Call - May 10, 2012)
PS3 in its current stage of the life cycle, still I think are in kind of mid-stream, the life of the platform, the momentum is still very strong..so as the installed base grows as you know we make a lot of money on the software side and I think this trend will go on for another hopefully several years. .So we’re not in kind of desperate need mode to have a next-generation coming to the business.

GameStop: Hardware Launch in 2014 (Earnings Call - March 22, 2012)
As we look ahead, candidly, we've made some assumptions about a hardware launch that will come in 2014 and that is a component of the revenue driver for that period of time

I still want to know how the industry went mad with stories about it and then all got it completely wrong.

AFAIR Gaikai mentioned that they were preparing a gamechanger for E3 or something, that maybe turned out to be the deal with Samsung.
The rumour about Sony partnering or buying a streaming company could just be the HTC "partnership".

Both combined and you get: "Sony buys Gaika - PS1/2 compatiblity through streaming - PS4 is already dead..." just my 2 cents.

So wait which demos from MS were 'remarkably similiar'?

Halo 4 was simliar to Splinter Cell?

Madden and Fifa Kinect demos were similiar to what?

Fable: The Journey and Gears of War: Judgement and Forza Horizon vids were similiar?

Tomb Raider and Resident Evil 6?

Wreckateer, Ascend New god, Dance Central 3, Stick of Truth? Where are the similarities?

Black Ops 2?

It was simply different to Sony's but NOTHING was 'remarkably' similiar.

To me, Microsoft's tentpole gameplay demos (Splinter Cell, Tomb Raider and Resident Evil 6) looked very similar to each other, all QTE-heavy third-person shooters. BLOPS2 also looked like every other Call of Duty game ever released. Madden and Fifa looked like... well, Madden and Fifa.

I'm not saying MS was bad, but to me, a lot of the demos were all "been there, done that." You could argue that for much of what Sony showed (PSBR, GOWA) but the fact that they were showing new IPs across a variety of hardcore genres got me much more interested than what MS showed.

Just my personal opinion, and again, I thought both conferences were awful - Sony was the cruise ship that flipped over earlier this year, compared to the full-on Titanic.

The conference was mediocre, but fine. We know the next gen is looming and they are going to throw out all of the little things to prolong it's life and unfortunately at this phase, it tends to not be a bunch of crazy new games, those are being worked on for next gen. I consider MS and Sony's conference fairly equal in that regard. However, Sony does have some new hardware, the fucking Vita, and you would have thought that was even deeper in it's life cylce than the PS3 based on the attention it got.

My PS3 will be LOU, all the free PS+ games and maybe GTA V depending on PC status. It had a good run, bring on PS4. My poor Vita.

Why was there a thread dedicated to the slating of game journalists at the conference just for cheering some freebies? Game criticism is largely a redundant practise, that's why even the best practitioners (Edge, KillScreen) aren't afforded their dues. As for cheering at the free PSN card announcement, give them a break! If anyone from GAF was in the audience I'm sure their reaction would haven been no less enthusiastic.

If someone tried to throw Saints Row 2 at me I'd dodge it.

It's been stated that most of the cheering in the audience was from the 200 fans that Sony let into the conference, and not from the journalists.

conference had quite a few outright dull moments, but I thought beyond looked super interesting, GOW was cool, and the last of us was simply amazing.

Problem is wonderbook was the 33,333% of the conference.
A thing without future (like Eyepet, eye of judgement) and just a little related with videogames. That on the "super bowl" of the videogames is, at least, sad.
Other 33,333% was the lack of more Vita games (even if they showed good stuff for it), and the other 33,333% was the missing stuff like Agent, FFXIII Versus or Last Guardian. I would have reduced the Wonderbook and Farcry 3 demos to put this stuff.

Besides that, the conference was pretty solid even if almost everything was leaked or shown previously. No great surprises for Gaffers but they announced or shown gameplay for the first time of prettty solid stuff.

beyond + last of us were the only good parts of the show IMO.

agreed, but they were very good parts i thought. i'm sure i'm going to hate beyond when it comes out though, because i'm sure the story will completely fall apart, but at least it shows that they've got really good actors to mitigate the cliched dialogue somewhat this time, which is going to be a big help.

what was that flash of Portal stuff in the opening montage by the way? DLC? I swear I hadn't seen a big oblong box capable of hitting two buttons at once anywhere in the Portal 2 I played, but I can't find anyone online talking about new Portal stuff for PS3, so I'm really not sure what I saw.

i liked the conference overall but two things i wish were there that weren't:

- a new Guerrilla Games title, new IP or Killzone 4
- a new Metal Gear Solid from Kojima

Someone in the games press needs ask Sony why they made a kids game where they encourage you to put a fire out with your bare hands.

I liked what I saw of AC III (probably because I didn't get to watch the Ubi presser, had I been able to I'm sure I would have been much less wowed), Beyond showed some promise but there was no gameplay to be seen, Last of Us was probably the high point of the conference, even if at times it felt like Uncharted with different player skins. That spell book thing was atrocious, not so much because of the concept of it but because of the ungodly amounts of time devoted to the presentation and the clumsiness of the whole thing.

You can get my 6 year old nephew to explain the difference between a book and actual flames.

Adults apparently need to be warned that Coffee is hot. Regardless Even if kids can tell the difference, it's still stupid. They could have cast a water spell, or closed the book or put a blanket over it. Something other then bat it with your bare hands.

I think this works well...
