Sony has $10 billion left to spend on acquisitions through 2023

They may want to hire somebody else for their M&A division otherwise they’ll get scammed again like with Bungie.

Watch them fork out $9 billion for Remedy.

Fortnite made $9 billion in 2018 + 2019. I'm sure they made a few billion in 2020 + 2021. Then who knows how much they make over the next few years.

Do you think Sony and Bungie view Fortnite as the pinnacle of game design?

Games are now capable of making $20+ billion. Marvel movies now view the gaming industry with jealousy. If Bungies next franchise hits big...3 billion will be considered a steal.

And here's the thing. Sony knows what Bungie is working on.

Remedy has no expertise in multiplayer. The money isn't going towards single player studios right now.

Sony and Microsoft have already made the biggest investments they are going to make this year. Amazon is up next.

From the looks of it, large purchases may have already been made? Not sure what they could have spent 8 Billion on thus far (6 something if minus Bungie)

I don't know why but a company that would make sense is Bandai Namco.

It feels like Bandai Namco would go good with Crunchyroll with all the Anime stuff.

Only thing it has a Market Cap of 16.13 Billion, which may end up being 20 billion to purchase.

Other than Bandai Namco, there is
Konami: 7.14 B
Square Enix: 5.91 B
Capcom: 5.14 B

BTW, this is the simple summary.

Sony said they were gonna spend 17 billion.

They've spent about 7 so far. PlayStation got about 37% of that.

With 10 bil left, that would meaning PlayStation might have like 3-5 billion left to spend. (Assuming their split of the money stays similar.)

ICO, Shadow of Colossus, Gravity Rush, The Last Guardian, co-developed THE Demon's Souls.......dead weight?!? ....OK then go buy EA or something

These games + IP are dead weight. Jim Ryan doesn't post on message boards going gaga over critically acclaimed games that sell 1.7 million copies. Those games do very little for PlayStation.

The race is for 20 billion dollar games now. The heavyweight era is upon us. Bantomweights don't draw numbers anymore.

One thing I like about this topic is how people put a publisher vs publisher.

Another thing I noticed. The hardcore love Japanese publishers over American ones, while casuals love the ones that always trick them every year.

it's not just about the Japan Studio issue, Sony is known to alienating Japanese fanbase and developers.

".....Sony has not only not made the appropriate efforts to cultivate the Japanese market, but has, in fact, done everything in its power to alienate and diminish it. From closing its local in-house Japanese development studio to imposing arbitrary content and administrative restrictions on Japanese games and game creators, to simply arrogantly throwing their weight around, with things as trivial as their reversal of the X and O button functions in the PlayStation UI and the lack of support extended to local developers, Sony has been burning bridges with a lot of Japanese developers and publishers for a while now....."

Whether they're alientating the Japan fanbase is irrelevent. Capcom are a westernised publisher now

Bloodborne only sold for 2-millions unit, so it's what you call bantom weights, but then why Sony fanboys begging for Bloodborne 2??? (BY Blue Point no less....hahahaha talk about fake Bloodborne)

i hate this aquisition shit but i wouldnt mind if someone saves konami ip. the problem is, who would want to buy the whole of konami just for a few games?
I don't like it too but its now the name of the game.

Nothing can stop MS and Sony gobbling up whatever's out there. Crazy times we live in.

Sony buys Kojima productions and Konami.
Would've thought Kojima would be under Sony's umbrella by now considering the history with them and MGS series of games.

Kojima could very well end up at Xbox too lol.

Just a note, this is just the budget that was allocated in last year's mid term business plan for acquisitions covering 2021-2022-2023.
Budgets are reviewed and updated at the beginning of each fiscal year.
So next May we'll see how and if the business plan is updated/changed. It's not binding and it's obviously not all the money they have.
Their budget from April 2021 to April 2024 was $17.4 billion.
After Bungie, the Fate/Grand Order studio, Housemarque, Bluepoint, Firesprite Crunchyroll and so on they have $10B left if they don't review it.

Kind off. They had to westernized Monster Hunter for people to finally realize how good MH has always been. Resident Evil with its games and movies too.
Are there more Americans playing in SF cups?

On their pro tour site for 2021 there were 6 qualifiers from the USA with Japan behind them with 4

No clue if i'm looking at the right thing though. Not well versed in e-sports

Why are so many Sony haters sweating about this?

Most of them are banking on another smaller impact acquisition, a lot of them hoping it’s just SE or Konami even if that would hurt a bit, all of them gonna turn into cry babies when it’s Capcom.

Keep saying Capcom. I'm sure Jimbo is watching this.
I just texted him, he'll read it tomorrow

I thought they had 18billion before the bungie deal
18B (17.4B) was in April. For 7.4B they bought Crunchroll, some Indian tv folks, Housemarque, Bluepoint, Firesprite, Fabrik, Nixxes, Valkyrie Bungie and someone else plus 5% of Devolver and invested $200M on Epic plus something else.

There's 10B left to spend on acquisitions and investments in the next couple of years, but they can always review the budget and increase it.

Ill be happy with Capcom, Sega or Square. Capcom makes the most sense

Capcom has Resident Evil, Street Fighter, Monster Hunter, DMC, plus plenty of other IP’s

Sega: Gives them loads of JRPG’s like Persona, SMT, Disgaea. Plus Yakuza, Virtua Fighter, Streets of Rage. PC centric games like Total War and Football Manager. Plus loads of IP’s like Sonic, Phantasy Star Online or Offline etc.

Square Obviously has Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, Dragon Quest. Loads of other IP’s and the likes of Hitman, Deus Ex, Tomb Raider

I was happy with how Sony use to only buy studios they worked with exclusively for years making their own IP, but I guess this needs to happen

It's funny how Sony is supposedly doing Japanese developers wrong but they still get the most 3rd party support from Japan

So pretty westernized. I know Capcom is bigger in Japan than Sony. Everything Capcom and Square tops the famitsu charts.

Yeah, they're still big in Japan no doubt. They'd help them regain some ground over there, but the real value would still be they have a global appeal.

I hope ms fans realize MS started something stupid (and they say they will keep going and fans want them to keep going) and in the end both make trades with each other. Like AB/Bethesda games for some of Capcom/Stop making SE games timed. If the competition is Google, Amazon, they would make these buys multiplatform, right? right?

Making they're taking turns so the FTC doesn't suspect anything.

I think Sony is making a big effort in Japan atm, getting Final Fantasy exclusive since the PS2 days is big. Persona 6 exclusive rumours. And Pragmata are all Japanese games. Hopefully more ontop of another Kojima and Miyazaki games.

People who think Sony has left Japanese are silly. They are just putting their resources into Japanese Studios differently.

Although I do miss games like Gravity Rush and The Last Guardian etc

They are not alienating anybody in Japan, it's just the haters spreading lies and fud.

Every single known Japanese 3rd party has made at least a PS4 exclusive and published their multiplatform games on PS. Jimbo said PS5 will have more exclusives than any previous PS console, and since most of their exclusives are 3rd party, this means there will be more 3rd party exclusives too. This gen we already saw many exclusives from ARC System Works, Kojipro, Kadokawa, Tango or specially Square to name some. Jimbo also said they were strengthening bonds with Japanese companies, remember as an example their deal with Kadokawa or that they hired that Capcom guy to helps with Japanese 3rd parties.

They didn't close Japan Studio, it was splitted into two studios:
-Team Asobi: internal development that merged all Japan Studio internal development teams and is growing with open job positions in a dozen different areas
-XDEV Japan: they are the ones who published Japanese 2nd party stuff inside Japan studio, outside will continue doing the same (they published Death Stranding Director's Cut outside Japan Studio) but now reporting to XDEV like the other XDEV teams around the world instead of reporting to a local studio

Polyphony will release GT7 next month, their biggest game ever.

Tell him I'll buy SF5 champion edition if he proceeds.

37% of 7.4b doesn't even cover Bungie...

Why not? They probably have more exclusives together with Capcom not including Pragmata and maybe Street Fighter.
They have put money in FF16 exclusive and FF7 Remakes etc and Forspoken.

I think Capcom fits better because they're a bit more global than SE. They can get help from Sony pictures for those atrocious Series/Movies Capcom has made (Uncharted will suck so, hey, maybe that's why they should be together, they suck at TV gaming adaptations).

Capcom is more focused on graphics vs SE and you know Sony knows this is a selling point. Capcom may learn how to make a GaaS with the help of Bungie (I guess?). They've tried with RE multiplayers so many times lol.

Then there's EVO and Sony not having a fighting studio (PS all stars 2 or a Marvel vs Capcom/Playstation could be cool).

Dragon Dogma checks the RPG sony needs and RE is for horror/survival horror. MH checks the co-op.

SE makes sense too, but it's mostly JRPG and the female Nathan Drake and Xbox has no pull there anyways. They already wasted $ on many timed exclusives I bet.
I think Capcom makes more sense for MS since it's more westernized so this is a defensive move. Plus Sony will make that back in a year.

I still think Sony is better off making targeted acquisitions rather than big publishers (Japanese or otherwise)

Think: Team Kojima (pretty obvious)

FromSoft may be small enough but they also have a lot of baggage with their parent company

CDPR but the valuation is a bad deal and the owners won’t likely sell

Parts of Warner like Rocksteady? (GaaS)

I just can’t see Square, Capcom, Ubisoft, etc being worth acquiring unless they are at risk of being acquired
