Sony has $10 billion left to spend on acquisitions through 2023

Are u sure because I am sure Square smaller Ip will be dead under Sony like Wild Arm and Legend of dragoon . Also like i said Square enix dont own dragon quest , Yuji Horii own the series unlike FF , if SE got bought by sony , the dude wont likely work with SE anymore and SE lose one of their iconic IP . They has nothing to gain and lose their freedom .

if Capcom under Nintendo , megaman maybe revive in exchange for RE dead

So you're saying Sony is basically getting FF.

Screw it. Let them buy Reggie.

Japanese government wouldn't allow Sony to acquire Capcom. And if they did Microsoft would swoop in and out bid Sony. Sega and Capcom to Microsoft. Calling it now
So the Japanese government would stop a Japanese company from acquiring another Japanese company? And won't stop an American company to buy the same Japanese company?

Japanese Publishers are a mistake. Sony already has them in their pocket without having to pay anything.
It's not so much what you already have access to, it's what you can limit costs and bundle into your $15 p/mo. subscription service.

I don't know why but a company that would make sense is Bandai Namco.

It feels like Bandai Namco would go good with Crunchyroll with all the Anime stuff.

Only thing it has a Market Cap of 16.13 Billion, which may end up being 20 billion to purchase.

Other than Bandai Namco, there is
Konami: 7.14 B
Square Enix: 5.91 B
Capcom: 5.14 B
SE has some anime or manga related stuff too right? I know a lot of their games are console exclusive already but that would make it all the bigger of a blow if MS buy them. Given the cap it's gotta be Capcom or SE

I’m actually really worried about Nintendo. Black berry an block buster were powerhouses at one point In time but we’re kinda adjacent towards we’re the market was heading. Sony is clearly embracing it finally, something I might add this board refused in believing, like with multi platform releases and pc ports. Nintendo’s doing AMAZING nobody can deny that, hell I’m playing my switch oled with arceus on break as I type this lol. But when the market is consolidated and you stick to your guns, doesn’t give me hope you know.

I pray to god nothing happens to Nintendo, but if you would’ve told 2-3-4-6 years ago that activision would be on the decline looking to sell to freakin Facebook or Amazon I’d laugh in your face. Hope they do SOMETHING out of their comfort zone because I don’t think sticking to their guns will work forever now.

So you saying a Japan company can buy a American company and its ok in but if a American company tries to buy an Japan company they have laws to prevent that from happening crazy if true
They do have such laws and the will to prevent such transactions. As does the US, and pretty much every country.

Did you not learn about American protectism at school?

Name one other game company that has the young personcs gaming market locked down?

Nintendo have a lot of games that appeal to children/younger people (as well as adults), and are one of the few trusted by people to keep children safe and have decent morales in their games.

If you're a parent and you want to get/let your child play games, where would you let them play? PC? Sony or Microsoft? Android? Even Apple isn't a great choice. With Nintendo, you have a system that is only deisgned to play games along with great parental controls.

Nitnendo are fine.

Go for Ubisoft and call it a day. They're the most multiplayer centric company left.
I honestly think Sony will end up going for a multiplayer centric, Western company and end up using them for service games primarily and make them multiplatform. Maybe they’ll even develop a few single player games as well.

Sony isn’t buying any publishers especially Square or Capcom why would they when they get exclusives from them and they don’t have to worry about microsoft purchasing them since there not a Japanese company. If anything they will purchase arcsystems, fromsoftware, maybe platinum games, or Kojipro if they are going the Japanese route. There more about purchasing developers. As for American could EA sell BioWare to them?

The same people who complained about us Xboys only talking about acquisitions are now super giddy about acquisitions. I wonder what changed :messenger_smirking:

I don't know?...Could it be the fact that MS has absorbrd both Zenimax and Activision-Blizzard, with the intention of scooping up an additional publisher -maybe more?- some time next year? It is a ridiculous theory, I'll concede, so let's forget about it...🤡

I see alot of people saying Sony buying capcom would be good for XXX reason EVO is not enough for Sony to buy capcom Sony pretty much through that money down the drain since every Dev now host there own tournament series rather it be online or offline EVO is cancelled. And in the FGC space Evo doesn't even make or break anymore since now a days you either travel to the event most of the time hosted by Redbull or Monster or you play online EVO is irrelevant. If Sony bought Capcom or square the chacnes of them reviving old ips is 0 Capcom and Square do a better job then sony every will with managing ips sony let there own JP division pretty much die Team asobi isnt working on any game and the only games they made in the past what 4 years as been Astro vr and Astro for the ps5. Bandi namco is an even crazier idea most of the devs there arent going to get locked down to just the ps5 Sony passed on a ridge racer game twice and pretty much abandoned Ace combat which is how 6 and Horizon became xbox exclusive and multiple platform and the PC version of 7 was there highest selling one. Capcom, Square and Bandi namco have exclusive switch games and barely any exclusive sony games probally because the ps4 and 5 have been selling close to nothing over there the past few years and software for either system now a days doesn't even chart.

I miss the days of innovative, diversive, and often crazy creativity coming out of Japan. I wish money was being invested in trying to revitalise that or at least going for aspirational independents who know exactly what's wrong with so many modern games but lack the budget to realise their ambitions, but it seems the way things are going, there will be little to no risk taking, leaving the whole industry somewhat stale and predictable.

That’s quite a lot, I guess we’ll know about some more acquisitions sooner rather than later.

Ill be happy with Capcom, Sega or Square. Capcom makes the most sense

Capcom has Resident Evil, Street Fighter, Monster Hunter, DMC, plus plenty of other IP’s

Sega: Gives them loads of JRPG’s like Persona, SMT, Disgaea. Plus Yakuza, Virtua Fighter, Streets of Rage. PC centric games like Total War and Football Manager. Plus loads of IP’s like Sonic, Phantasy Star Online or Offline etc.

Square Obviously has Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, Dragon Quest. Loads of other IP’s and the likes of Hitman, Deus Ex, Tomb Raider

I was happy with how Sony use to only buy studios they worked with exclusively for years making their own IP, but I guess this needs to happen
As much as i'd love seeing Insomniac make a Sonic game, I have to agree Capcom does make more sense.

That was four years ago. Aka ancient history.
That deal with Ubisoft+ on Xbox says Yves isn't ready to give up his company or go anywhere yet.

As of now the only way anyone buys Ubi is if he dies and the shareholders decide its time to sell IMO.

Konami pls, Sony-San.
Metal Gear 6 with Kojima.
Silent Hill with Kojima.
New Castlevania.
PES Reboot
New Cartoon games (Tiny Toons, Turtles etc)

Do it, Sony! 🤩🥳
This makes too much sense, but it won't happen because it does. 😆

With that said, I'd want someone else to do MGS6 since Kojima wanted to move on to new things and kill the MGS series with fire.

DenchDeckard

Moderated wildly
Capcom is ripe for Sony because they get the licenses to make movies too, and would love to make some resident evil, monster hunter movies done right I am sure…or hope.

to have monster hunter, street fighter and resident evil owned by Sony would be huge for them and would make their push to PC even stronger.

Edit: Quoted the wrong person question still stands.

Since we are all Gung ho about these acquisitions, how do you feel if Sony gets one of those and the rest are split off to other companies?

Still feel pretty good about it?

They going to get smaller studios as usual! Sony approach is different from MS.

MS is hoarding big IPs
Sony is after talent to grow their gaming library.

As some people pointed out, yeah each generation it seems MS kickstarts a new trend for the industry… pay online, timed exclusives and this generation is all about acquisitions.

I am thinking SE would make the most sense, FF14 is wildly popular (They seem to be pushing hard into live services gaming, Sony that is), plus SE has its fingers in a lot of pies at the moment, would be a good fit.

Edit* FF7R is basically exclusive, as well as FF16, so maybe it's all but a done deal?
Why would Sony buy a Square? They are already reaping benefits of Square without owning them. FF 14 is console exclusive, same for FF VII Remake and FF XVI. And western studios of Square are not exactly service oriented. Which is clearly way where Sony wants to go

What else could they do? Sony can buy timed exclusives with no questions asked, if MS tried they get grilled.

So instead of buying timed exclusives just buy the developer, that way nobody can question you.

If Sony had invested into 1st party instead of trying to buy everything as a timed exclusive, MS might not have felt the need to go for the big guns.

Of course there's more to it than that, but let's be real, Sony got themselves into an arms race they didn't want to see.

Let's look back just a little bit to Aug 2020.....

They get grilled because of what they done on the past! The tomb raider deal - mixed messaging from Phil saying it was fully exclusive when it was not! Anyway MS could build tons of studios with all that cash and we wouldn’t be here arguing/feeling pity and dwelling over the acquisitions madness.

Sony could have too, instead they felt it was better to buy timed exclusivity on games they were getting anyway.

It's not like they have never been deceptive about it, just nobody bothered to ask, like Diablo 3.

I'm not trying to say one is better or worse than the other, but I don't see how anyone didn't understand this was how it was going to end.

You can only sit back and take it for so long before you make your move.

They were. You can look up on gaming news about it.

Since you are an Xbox fan I would give you a different perspective.
Imagine Apple has a console for 20 years. They build a fanbase and destroy it because of greed. They engage on Twitter with toxic people, alienating anyone who isn’t fully commit to their platform. Apple relies on their diehard fans so much that barely does anything to bring new gamers to their platform. So basically for the majority of the gamers they - Apple, lost their goodwill and trust.
Then Apple decides to buy Bethesda and Activision because “reasons”

And it’s all fair and competition but depends on what perspective you are watching from.

Except that's not how it happened.

Cool story though.

I can see how people think they are entitled to everything and miss the blind spots and ignore the shitty stuff thier favorite company is doing.

It's only when somebody starts doing it back to them, do they realize maybe they fucked up a bit.

As I showed above most were happy Sony was paying to starve other consoles of content, now suddenly the tables turn and it's not fair and monopoly cries start coming out.

This is not quite a honest take and you know it. You know why MS gets criticised for it and Sony does not (size is also a factor, SEGA signing up a studio was different than Sony doing the same in the old days for the same reasons) and why timed exclusives is not the same as buying publishers committed to massive multiplatform titles and permanently removing on of them.

It was the PR offensive positioning itself as the enemy of exclusives that did not bring games to “everyone” while signing up an oddly defined timed exclusive deal (see TR) and the definition of everyone always having the caveat of “everyone that is on a platform we own”. If Sony had bought Bethesda and made Doom exclusive they would have been criticised too as it is one poster child of console multiplatforms.

All legal sure, albeit most of the money Sony is spending on the gaming side they made on the gaming side and not on other divisions (competition laws pay attention to the outcome of that).

Getting Capcom, Square Enix, Sega, Konami, and even Bandai Namco would secure PS flow of "QUALITY" and quantity content with minimalistic threat by any. These companies can even get a similar deal as Bungie but with much better help, financially and experience/hardware, to assist them with their projects.

At the time they did the TR deal they hadn't positioned themselves that way yet.

It was after the TR deal that they said they would no longer pursue that avenue.

Let's not rewrite history.

Hopefully no Japanese companies.

I mean Japanese companies are generally going to be hard to poach by Western companies anyway, so why would anyone root for them to be bought by Sony.

That being said, didn't Grasshopper sell to Tencent?

Fuck that shit, I take it all back: buy em all Sony!

Think Sony actually gets more scrutinized recently when it comes to exclusive deals. The reason is gamers know with Microsoft that games will come to PC day one, but they can't be sure about this when it comes to Sony.

Just look at his post history

Their latest cope is to pretend Sony isn't a Japanese company therefore can't engage with a Japanese publisher

Why would that? There is way more fishes in the sea.
The Activision deal is not guaranteed to go through, but it's very, very likely that it will. Do you want to risk the FTC stepping in even more if they acquired someone like Take 2?

Not saying they will block the deal, but it is risky.

This is what several people who follow the video game industry are saying and it seems very reasonable why it would be risky.

And would it matter if they are buying a Japanese publisher?
Microsoft would have to get approval from the Japanese government if they tried to acquire a major publisher.
