Sony is working on allowing PlayStation players to smell in-game scents in real life

I still remember a joke from a 1990s magazine about Creative Smell Blaster being released for PCs. I was young & dumb enough to believe that.

The concept of adding smells would be an interesting proposition for PSVR2 to improve the immersion (in some limited version, of course, based on a set of fragrance bottles), but Sony doesn't even care about VR anymore.

Here's some hands on experience from 4Gamer & GamerJP via Automaton West :messenger_grinning_sweat:

As for what it actually smells like, 4Gamer describes identifying the fragrances of roses, lavender and vegetation while viewing establishing shots of the village, as well as an oceanic smell during fishing scenes. Scenes of Nikki herself were enhanced by the smell of her perfume.

Despite there being a surprisingly large number of scents during the 2-minute experience, they apparently did not mix or linger, and there was no sensation of mist hanging in the air or something being sprayed around you. Gamer.jp reports that “the scent is emitted from a nozzle at the bottom of the monitor, and the amount is adjusted to prevent multiple scents from mixing, taking into account the distance from the viewer.” The Grid Scent seems to be equally effective at eliminating scents as it is at creating them.

That's what we really need, is to shut off all our senses from the 'outside world' while in VR. You're child could be on fire and you will never know it, because you are too busy smelling virtual roses in a VR environment.

Actually, this is the perfect game to show this tech since it features many evocative landscapes and in some quests, you have to search for perfumes hidden in caves. Olfactive cues would be pretty amazing if well done.
