Soul Sacrifice Review Thread

I finally convinced friends to play MH3 U and I'm having tremendous amounts of fun with multiplayer ( just beat the Lagiacrus, so we have a great amount of things to do ).

But nobody I know owns a vita... and they probably won't buy one for Soul Sacrifice. I guess I'll play alone till I'm bored with the repetition or hit a major difficulty wall.
Customization seems varied, so I know it will hook me at least for some amount of time. And I like the art direction so...

I hope the progress is as fluid as it is in MH3 U, I love how I learn to defeat a new monster each day ( after being trampled by it a few times ) and how the loot keeps you coming for more. I think what I'll miss in Soul Sacrifice is the "animal crossing-esque" gameplay you also have in Mon Hun : fishing, collecting ressources at your own pace and hunting in moga is quite relaxing.

I would agree, especially on RPGs.

Our reviewer said he'd only put 14 hours in, and the multiplayer was offline hence we couldn't score it.

Wait the MP was offline for reviewers as well? 0_o How does these review scores come about then...that's the most important aspect of the game

Nvm I guess they just used the demo for that smh

You guys rock for doing it the proper way, mad props for that

on a different note..why does the GT review keep mentioning dark souls...and why is the biggest complaint grinding!? This is not a 6 hour action adventure game lol Of course there's grinding, that's part of the fun

probably does not help that this a somewhat niche japanese game. it seems like japanese games, I have noticed tend to review lower on average, even when gameplay/ presentation can be better then some westen games.

The botton mashing comments are nonsense though, and imo shows reviews did not play much of the game. I still prefer God Eater overall in this game type, but the demo was a ton of fun.

Just gonna go ahead and say that none of these reviews (even the positive ones), give multiplayer/Avalon the amount of space it deserves. Despite having a substantial single player mode (it's excellent), the main focus is absolutely the MP. A huge chunk of the bosses don't even show up in the story mode.

Looks like there's a reason for this. The review copies might not have MP enabled, as playstation Life's review has this in it:
Multiplayer is available in ad-hoc and online modes, though the latter was not possible with the version provided. Players should also take note that the game requires an online pass.
So there's that I guess.

Swing by the OT and add yourself on the list: http://neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=545656. There are already over 120 gaffers signed up so chances are high you can create a group with them. Also playing with randoms seems to be hit-or-miss, but mostly I've been getting good teams in the demo.

These reviews are worthless then if they couldn't play the MP. That's Sonys fault more than the reviewers though, why the fuck would you hand out this game of all games for review but not put up some review servers? I hope they know their incompetence is losing them some scores and sales.

Looking at the Eurogamer review, some of it seems to be that there were just not enough people on.

At time of writing, the European servers were effectively barren, so we had to make use of the ad-hoc functionality instead of the online modes.

With the some complaints in these reviews, I somewhat doubt the online would change their opinions much because they would need to bother to play it first.

Given how monster hunter typically reviews in the west, im not that suprised. These kinds of games are hit and miss with people.

Plus seems like they didn't get into much MP matches, so that would definetly skew the review. solo and coop feel very different.

Multiplayer worked for few hours - I played maybe 3 missions and then Sony put offline servers, so review is without this element. Or just judged after demo.

Gotta pay the Vita tax. Ridiculous that one of the most refined and fun combat systems this year is getting 6 scores. Really sad that this will probably deter some people from playing based on the opinion of guys who just apparently rushed through the game. Even in Singleplayer, you can play the "MP" content since the game provides AI for you, you'll just have to work on improving yourselves and your allies.

PSN Profiles showed that of the early players (i.e., review copies and I guess potentially some staff) only a small number had unlocked the first online trophy and I can't recall seeing anyone with the larger number of pacts one unlocked.

I'd say that anyone who has released a review for this embargo has done so without having played enough multiplayer to judge competently - the demo was all well and good, but it is hardly the entirety of what you could experience in the game. Or, I guess you could have got 4 players, 4 vitas and 4 review codes and had them all grind for about 10 hours to ad hoc some of the later Avalon pacts but I doubt any of the sites went to that depth.

So then, multiplayer being down for the review period for a multiplayer based game = stupid. I'd probably not read too much into most of these early reviews to be honest.

Yeah, but it would a totally different experience taking two AI companions with you that usually exist to be a bit of a dmg sink vs playing with randoms or a co-ordinated online party

Any of the reviewers bring up the hohum english localization? Specifically the VA?

Some of the most uninspired shit i've heard in quite awhile.

Not saying that's the case for everyone. Just that that's the case for us...

according to the mails we got from Sony, the mp was offline for all people. BUT they asked us to play the demo because the MP was exactly the same.. my review will be online later today.. and I mention in the review that the MP impressions are based on the Demo.

and yes I liked the game..
85/100

I put Edge reviews at the lowest priority when it comes to game mechanics, evident from their Ni no Kuni/Metal Gear Rising/StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm etc reviews.

But it did say the voice acting for Soul Sacrifice was terrible.

I don't own a Vita and I'm not really interested in Soul Sacrifice but...

any MH-like game not called MH won't get universal praise by the Western press. Just the way it is.

it's not a button mashy game. you'll notice this fighting the harpy or cerberus. that's multiplayer fight number 3 and 4 in the demo. i don't know why these people are getting paid.

Well, I kinda expected scores to be around 7.5 average. Still a little disappointing to see 6's :(

Guess I'm NOT buying Soul Sacrifice today.
Tomorrow for my region!!! Soooo effin' excited!!!!

Anyone else wanna clarify the button mashing X grinding associate with Soul Sacrifice? How likely does that happen?

I hate to 'disagree' with any reviewer and I really hate 'they're playing it wrong', but I honestly don't know. I'm not a refined gamer by any means and this isn't a genre that I favour so I started out button mashing. It doesn't work. You really do need to think about what attacks to use and when to use them as pretty much all of them are finite.

I think that's fine. If the reviews stated they'd only played the demo online, no issue from me.

exactly

you REALLY can only take "gaming journalism" at face value most of the time. It's a system of people who play their games in a vacuum to meet a deadline. period. This IS NOT the same as someone who would be casually playing and enjoying it over a long stretch of time (weeks, months, etc.), with proper time to digest it.
Listen to GAFFers and your friends, not freaking IGN

Expected really. Although not reviewing the multi player portion seems stupid. If i had to review the game based on the retarded AI team mates alone i'd give it a lower score too.

Very improbable, if the demo is any indication. X is not actually a mappable attack button BTW.

I see. I think that is a little too harsh to brand yourself, I have little experience with this genre too which is why newcomers opinions are equally valuable.

lol, oh shit!

can someone CTRL C/CTRL V the review and PM me? I'm at work :(

Check your pm.

i'd probably give this a look if i had a vita. the flawed games with heart are more my style, and a 7-8 in this case indicates a better game than a big name franchise in the same bracket.

So it seems the boss fights are what really intensifies things...but do we have any idea of what the game is like outside of them, do the enemies get smarter and more interesting to fight as well later on...any mention on that?

I wish the Polygon review would go into more detail, seems he only describes the beginning grind and the Cerberus fight. Which many here have already experienced with the demo.
