That's because the multiplayer wasn't working until the game's launch.but they don't seem to really explain why they the multiplayer isn't as engaging as Monster Hunter

I'm hoping that we see costume DLC, and that they take that particular criticism into consideration for the rumoured sequel.I have to imagine that the lack of true customization for your appearance is a big part of it. I love going online in MH3U and seeing all the different sets that people use. Soul Sacrifice opting to use a limited amount of costumes with no impact on the gameplay itself is a big step down from that, IMO.
You make it sound like there is an objective set of standards by which all games can be judged. I think you're oversimplifying the review process.
At the end of the day I want a reviewer to tell me their opinion of the game because that's the only thing they are in a place to tell me. I don't need someone to wildly speculate about what other people will or won't enjoy, that's something that should be discerned by the individual who is reading the review.
HOLY SHIT!
I just played the demo finally, and wow! If there was ever a game where the reviews made it completely clear that gaming journalists are worthless, it's this fucking game.
* Fantastic art style
* Fantastic menus/UI
* Great graphics
* Great voice acting
* Great music
* Great story
* Innovative level up system
* Multi-player
I just tried a few of the spells so far and they felt amazing. That fireball dash is brutal, and super fast. Those red sword slashes feel super vicious, and the charged up version is awesome.
Man, so far this is a great as I hoped it would be. How this ever got the scores it's getting is completely lost on me. I guess some people aren't into it, but this game is definitely for me.

Not to mention the SERVERS. I can get into games immediatly, no waiting time, its incredible.
The best thing about the thing is the super polished combat system together with the player incentives to improve himself. Oh and the lore behind the game and how its integrated into the whole game concept/menu is just awesome. Oh and it has TONS of content. This game is definitely GOTY material.
I think a more interesting question what must a game in this genre do to get a 90+ score? MH couldn't do it, Soul Sacrifice couldn't do it. As far as I know, none of the games in this genre did it, no? Unless it's a genre that is considered to be less equal to other genre.
I have no experience in this so I can't comment but for fans of SS, MH, GE etc. what should be improved in this formula?
This game (or any other of the genre) will never get a 90+ score because there are a lot of reviewers that don't like the basics of the genre.
So, a game of this genre, in order to get a 90+, has to abandon the genre, having more exploration, less hunting and, basically, being something else.
Posted it in the OT first, since I didn't know we have a review thread.
Polish Eurogamer gave it 9/10, because the reviewer actually waited until he can play the multiplayer. Google Translated version can be found here.
I'm not surprised that this game is scoring in the high - average range. The mainstream game press is incapable of properly reviewing any games that have integral online components or have gameplay mechanism that take more than a few minutes to understand. My hope is that the audience for this game understands this, and applies their own positive weighting to the scores. I definitely want to see more games like this in the future.
Why do other reviewers not do this too?
Unite is just Freedom 2 with more content IIRC. If outlets didn't like it the first time around a re-release with more of the same shouldn't have netted reviews better by 10% especially since content is not a problem with Monster Hunter games.

RPGamer would have had NA copies to review and other people have confirmed that online was live for those reviewers, it was the EU that didn't have servers up
RPGamer's review is thoughtful and a good review. No problems with that. On a 5 scale a 3.5 is actually a pretty good score. Of course Metacritic sees it only as a 70, part of the problem with Metacritic. That's another topic though.
Mathematics, how do they work?!
On a scale of 1 to 5, 3.5 is exactly the same as a 7/10 or 70 out of 100......
