Well, I find it unfair, the game obviously deserves better sales.

It's a generic run-of-the-mill Ubisoft open world crap. They didn't put any effort in making this game memorable.
 
Having spent getting on for £100 on this game, it has been a dispriting experience. Spoilers about story content:

Highlights include:

* Lando showing up between Empire and Jedi to teach me how to cheat at cards when I am pretty sure he was just on his way to save Han.

* Darth Vader showing up for no reason at all with someone else's voice.

* In a climactic scene, where I am taking on a Star Destroyer, every time I fly towards the turbo lasers to take them out, I get a return to quest and it kills me in ten seconds.

* With the same Destroyer, I concentrate fire on the shield generators first - and they are absolutely invincible until the game tells me I can hit them.

* While trying to sweep up collectables I get crashs and weird glitches going up and down ladders, with quest markers telling me to search in the wrong place half the time.

* Dreadful checkpoints throughout that feel they are either wasting your time getting you to repeat difficult sections or fast forwarding you ahead.

* The graphics of the character models on Akiva in cut scenes are PS2 level.

* Whoever wrote the story has some issues as every baddie is a white guy (and every white guy is a baddie) and every goodie is as diverse as they come.

It really puts you off buying what comes next and I suppose that's why Shadows is on ice. I bought Unity on Day 1 and this has very similar vibes.

The most expensive ubisoft marketing to date
Sold approximately 1 million units in a month and probably needs at least 5-6 million units to break-even at a full price or 10-12 million units at a discounted price.

Assume dev, licencing, and marketing budget of $250MIL (could be less or more than that).

Assume they sold 1mil copies at full price and after cuts and royalties cut to disney they make about $40 per copy. = $40MIL revenue.

Assume they will scrape another 1mil sales at a lower price, let's say bringing in $30 per copy. = $30MIL revenue.

Assume by some miracle they sell another 1mil, bringing in $20 per copy. = $20MIL.

Total = $90MIL revenue to Ubisoft if being generous.

Therefore it looks incredibly unlikely to me they can recoup even half of the budget of this game, let alone every make a $1 of profit on it.

Sparking Zero madeira 3mi in 24hours, 800.000 in 2 days is horrible for a Star Wars branded game.
Not only 2 days but a few extra days with early access numbers which is around 7 days, for a video game title the first week sales numbers is the most important because the bulk of your income comes from day-one full price purchases and preorders.

Game is actually pretty decent once you get over the fact that it’s not Division w/ a Star Wars skin. It’s a stealth adventure game with light shooting mechanics and a ton of great atmosphere.

35h played I’d give an 8/10

If a company wishes to charge full price, they should be aiming for exceptional quality or just make it some early access thing until they feel they are ready for a full release.

Look at BG3.

No one needs to buy any game day 1, but a release implies its completed, finished and the game's quality, should reflect its price
 
I’m thankful this thing is bombing big time. After watching the gameplays and seeing all the bugs, I knew it was cooked. Combine that with the main character who’s annoying af, then I’m not really surprised. She’s almost as annoying as Aloy and that’s an achievement. Imagine coming home after a long day of work to get nagged by this mc in a game you paid money for smh.

More likely $250M is just for the development cost and licensing fees. You'd probably have another $150M at the very least in marketing as this game was heavily marketed for sure. Putting Ubisoft $400M in the hole.

You also have to take 30% out of each unit sold as, besides the EGS, stores and digital shops take 30% out of each purchase, meaning of every $70 game sold, Ubi would get $49. This would give them $49M in revenue, THEN Disney would take it's cut from the revenue rather than the sale of each unit and Disney would probably take 40% at the VERY least. Leaving them with ~$30M for that first month alone. What makes this worse and that Disney is going to take that cut every revenue they receive. They are not making $250M - $400M on this game now that they had to lower the cost this early.

It's a second choice and people nowadays skip first choices, the numbers clearly shows they're not invested in the ecosystem, it's a survival game for the game industry, you can't trick the community, everyone has rich mindset and not wasting time.

For those of you guys doing some financial estimates above, if this game cost anywhere close to $200-300Mor more total that’s insane absurd budget busting.

Just to break even this game (after royalty cuts to stores or e-stores) would require a lot of sales frontloaded at regular price, or as you guys did above some kind of blended sales per copy as the games sells a mix of reg price and bargain binning.

Game probably has a breakeven of about 10M copies at a blended net sales rate.

Even more stupid is making it a stealthy game with a female lead, which won’t resonate with SW fans as much as a male hero and a more action orientated game. When you hear a Star Wars game the last thing think of is a stealth game like you’re playing hitman or hiding behind walls and boxes like Metal gear.

I totally get it that making a smuggler kind of game isn’t going to be a Jedi sword slasher. But if making the game stealthy is the best they can do with a Han Solo v2 character it was destined fail a mile away.

I always try and be conservative when guesstimating figures from thin air, so yeah I think I am being quite generous with it.

They definitely will be getting spanked by yhe Disney royalty.

From memory the Insomniac/Sony royalty for Spiderman wasn't pretty and no doubt this would be more considering its Star Wars and Disney.

With development, marketing, licening Star Wars, I would expect it to be somewhere around that give or take, given the visuals, type of game, platforms and Western dev budgets which are more costly than Asia due to factors like salaries, prioritising graphics and using the latest technologies.

Agreed! Day One patches are cool. But if you need 30-90 days worth of patches to get your game to a "playable" state, then you are hustlin' backwards. That's bad! But if you release a good game and patches make it great, then that's okay.

If any company is going to spend over $200m to make a Star Wars game, it NEEDS TO BE A JEDI GAME! No way anything else makes sense. I don't even think a literal Hans Solo game with a budget of $250m would make sense.

Serves them right tbh, looking how crap SW has been over the years and it's core fanbase diminishing, how stupid someone has to be to license to greedy Disney for a game in which you only get to play as some random, run of the mill strong independent woman? 🤦‍♂️

Blame Kathleen Kennedy for ruining the rep of the SW brand to such an extent that it won’t sell your SW themed game on the strength of the brand alone.

During the franchise peak this game would have done gang busters off the name + graphics alone.

Such a shambles.

So by your maths Ubi would need to sell approx 14m units at full price to break even? Does that sound credible?

Star Wars Jedi survivor is a better and has more appealing game, the lightsaber is cool. Ubisoft tried something different and the story didn’t hit the spot. It plays fine (if you like stealth/action) the visuals are pretty stunning if you’ve got a top of the line pc. If you were playing Hans solo with a story around that l think it would have been more appealing.

Most likely they were hoping the Star Wars hype would boost sales. This game most likely started development three or four years ago when people were still interested in Star Wars. Star Wars Battle Front hit 14 million units before it dropped price and Jedi Fallen Order managed 20 million units before price drop.

Afterwards they would sell DLC as another way to bring in revenue.

Star Wars as a brand has begun to fall off which isn't something they would've predicted back in 2019-2020.

Yeah, it wouldn't either, but that's besides the point, they chose a new character taken out of nowhere, with no ties with the canon and the only thing going for her is that she's so strong and independent because "the force is female" push that keeps failing over and over again 🤷‍♂️
