Interesting looking at a snapshot of the latest negative reviews at this moment, they are all 'key' symbols indicating it was bought on third party sites so can't be refunded. So these aren't review bombers.

This review bombing nonsense is just a false narrative. But looking at those comments, it is pretty obvious that this is tied directly to pisspoor performance more than anything else. Bethesda needs to get off their ass.

Yes I just saw this today, mentioned in another thread. It looks like there is the potential to dramatically improve performance if they can fix this. It's like when someone found a bug in Rockstar's code a while back, and Rockstar fixed it and rewarded the person who highlighted it. Everyone would give Bethesda credit if they did the same, and it would neutralise most of the criticism.

Its funny seeing the same people asking where are the hype thread coz they didnt see any hype thread in forum/social media/articles and when shown proof, striaght shift and tried to gaslight blaming why fall for such hype is like scorn psyco exgf level here

They were holding the flag then and wearing the shirts now.

Yea i posted that yesterday in god knows what thread, too many starfield threads now haha.

But this, combined with recent example like the one below from Jedi survivor :

In Jedi Survivor's case, this cannot be done by anything else than a junior developer with no peer review from seniors in the team. Like nobody should be pushing this code with the performance graphs it has

Let's not even go into the script kiddies who find problems or fix problems such as the Last of Us using a bugged Oodle version or the constant ultrawide screen support done by just changing an HEX entry.

Any arguments to protect these devs/publishers from not doing the basics of giving a shit for a port is unsupported. More and more peoples are looking deep into the microbenchmarks of the games and find sheer UTTER INCOMPETENCE.

Now imagine, Microsoft's published game with probably a ton of engineers working on it for the last year to polish the game, doesn't even support their own fucking API correctly.

Interesting... well MS went back and fixed Halo and this is a big title for them, maybe they will push/invest Bethesda to go through and patch the fuck out of the game... esp when the public themselves are pointing out some of the glaring fixable issues.

Does that fall in their line with their past attitude and behavior? They are under MS now though so hopefully they get pushed to patch it up. Guess we will find out..

One would hope. Todd Howard was on an interview along with Phil Spencer and flatly rejected the idea that PC wasn't optimized and told folks to upgrade their hardware. Not real hopeful if Todd feels like he can say all that right in front of the CEO without blinking.

Dang, it's still falling. In the beginning, I was surprised it did so well (89%). The score started to fall over time, which made sense. I was surprised when it fell below Fallout 4 (82%), which was the game that caused me to lose faith in Bethesda (I'd been a previous fan of everything back to Morrowind, but I couldn't get into Fallout 4 despite multiple attempts). I was very surprised when it reached a halfway point between Fallout 4 and Fallout 76, which I never touched and is clearly Bethesda's low point. Now, I'm rather shocked to see that the score continues to fall, and it's much closer to Fallout 76 than Fallout 4.

  • Fallout New Vegas : 95.24%
  • Skyrim : 93.88%
  • Oblivion : 93.77%
  • Morrowind : 93.14%
  • Fallout 4 : 81.85%
  • Starfield 72.83%
  • Fallout 76 : 71.73%

I've already made up my mind to pass on the game, based on previous reviews/impressions. Still, I find it entertaining to watch the score. How low will it go?

Would driver improvements from Nvidia and DLSS support be enough? I was actually surprised how well the game ran on my 5700 xt / Ryzen 3600.

Gotta say I love the people here saying this game is just an average game when the aggregate says otherwise.

Would driver improvements from Nvidia and DLSS support be enough? I was actually surprised how well the game ran on my 5700 xt / Ryzen 3600.

It seems in a lot of areas the game is CPU bound so wouldn't help there, but yeah, DLSS would be a big step in the right direction, imo. Nvidia has always been pretty good with their game driver updates.

I'm not blaming Nvidia. I thought I read somewhere that they didn't have access to the game early enough in order to optimize the drivers for it. I could be mistaken.

It will fall into the 60s if Bethesda continues to do nothing. Once they fix the issues then I expect the rating to rise back up. Same issue Jedi Survivor is having right now with negative reviews on Steam due to poor performance.

Yeah but that was before the game's code was picked apart by the community so... like i said we shall see. Wouldn't surprise me if they went either way though haha

Quite possibly never. Of course, it’s not a completely fair comparison because Game Pass, but I still never imagined that Starfield wouldn’t be able to beat Fallout 4 CCU peak when Steam was a fraction of what it is today.

What was Fallout 4's peak CCU?

Wow the Fallout 76 comparisons really put things into perspective. Im glad im not alone with my criticisms.

I am very conflicted on this game. I dont want this to become a game everyone trashes because i admire them for taking a chance with an ambitious new IP even if they ultimately failed to execute these ideas flawlessly.

Damn, this is definitely falling below Fallout 76 then.

Starfield is only 1.18% points away from that happening. And Fallout 76 has ~40,000 more user reviews than Starfield.

May even fall below 70% and into the "mixed" Steam review threshold.

What's the negative % for Starfield now? Is it 26% yet?

I think it's ok if that happens to Bethesda - they should be able to handle it. They are one of the largest publishing houses in the world, now backed by the second largest company by market cap. Often what happens in gaming is that a smaller studio will accomplish everything these big companies are trying to do in scope and execution and more. Baldur's Gate 3 is an excellent example of this. It's running circles around the biggest AAA blockbusters released this year.
FROM Software is another great example of this. If I am still correct, their studio is still located above a smaller grocery store in Japan - or at least it was while they were making some of their biggest games like Bloodborne.

I'm 100% with you. Even as a Playstation-only console owner, I want this game to succeed. Mostly for the bolded that you said. But secondly for Xbox's fate's sake.

Since we're in the business of conspiracy theories going by some of the folks here, the initial high reviews on steam were mostly reviewed by Bethesda and MS employees. Phil handed out the codes personally to each one of them as a show of gratitude. That's one hell of a bonus.

In fact, Microsoft acquired so many publishers and studios only because they can increase their employee count and they can all positive-review-bomb Starfield upon release -- which is why the score was inflated at the start. The perfect long con. 😛

This game is your basic ass Bethesda rpg from early 2000s. What people were expecting is an evolution of that. Nothing has improved whatsoever aside from the graphics and even that doesnt look impressive. Todd Howard and Co. Didn't do jack shit about tempering expectations, only reinforced it. You can go ahead and keep complaining about people's expectations while I look at those steams reviews drop.

The quest structure seems significantly updated. Most basic quests are long quests that take you to several locations. The activities are what used to pass as quests. Whatever, it seems to be a bit better than Fallout 4 and Skyrim in that regard. Bugs aside. The bugs on this one have been worse for me so far.

All of those negative reviews leaning that way aren't just some coincidence. And I'm sure just like any other game out there, noting that Starfield isn't the exception, gets reviewed in a whole wide spectrum. What you're seeing is naturally what it should almost fall as far as the score. Low 70s. Chick Fila.

I've fallen off of it pretty hard and can see it happening to more people after the initial honeymoon period.

Still good, but largely disappointing in many aspects.

70/100 Steam user reviews also prove that IGN’s Dan’s 7/10 was almost perfect.

And the 85 MC, inflated by those 10/10s, may be a bit too generous.

Dan is a huge Bethesda fan, and I think he reviewed the game like a true gamer would. And that’s why he got the pulse right and though exactly in line with how other Steam gamers thought — which is quite impressive in hindsight.

I can see the disappointment. Runs bad, some extremely shit AI from enemies and companions, gunplay is weak, loads of copy/paste, same old character interactions with some of the laggiest chat options. The setting is doing a lot of heavy lifting for me.

Not really. Steam reviews are not validating critics. If Bethesda fixes the performance issues then the Steam score will rebound. Just like they are with TLOU which had negative reviews initially.

Is it still worth getting now?

The gaming market can do without Xbox.

Playstation, Nintendo and PC are more than enough for healthy competition, especially if the rumors about Switch 2 are true.
Each platforms has it's pros and cons, as well as libraries that make each platform distinct from eachother.

MS is just a disruptive factor, initially meant to stop Playstation from dominating the console-market. Which it failed at, btw.

Started off 90%, now 72%, that's a nice pair 90/72 and keep changing, cool pronouns for bethesda, worst bethesda vanilla release for sure. Still not giving up on the game though, that's the beautiful of mods and that's why I love playing games on PC and games with mod support. Almost won't ever regret your purchase when mods are robust to change the game.

Yep , once the dust settles Starfield will be between 7-8.
Its good for a new IP but also hope this is the final game developed on thar old engine.

Do not know if there are other engines tha can handle the amount of data Bethesda's games have specially with item location and managing. But unless the company finds a new one their games will be forever a glitch fest.

Played Fallout76 this weekend and is crazy how the same old glitches are there in Starfield , they never fixed them just ported them to the new game..this means they will be there on thier next game.

Well, one may like or dislike TLOU as a game, but at the very least it's highly regarded for its gameplay among professional critics and users alike. The same cannot be said in relation to Starfield. In case of TLOU you just need to iron out all the performance issues and voila, you have a game that is close to being perfect at what it's supposed to do. In Starfield's case, however, no amount of performance and bug fixes will resolve its deep-rooted gameplay related issues.

If you want something that plays a lot like fallout4, and you have a pretty good PC, yeah it's worth a buy. But waiting a bit for a patch or two is valid. For me it hits just right because I like the BGS games, even with their jank, and I'm a sucker for space/sci-fi settings, my favorite genre. I think one thing most people can agree on is that it's likely to have long legs and will ported to every device and appliance not owned by Sony over the next 10 years. So there will be plenty of time to pick it up when you feel like it. It's not going anywhere.

And the fact that TLOU was released in a horrible state is the reason it is at 61% positive right now on Steam. Being highly regarded doesn't change that. But since Naughty Dog (or whoever) put in the work to fix the problems, the recent reviews of the game are at 87% positive. Steam users are going to downvote good, even great games in a heartbeat if they have shitty performance. That's the point.
