...I'm just about to play Half-Life for the first time ever, missed it somehow, not sure why.

Only decided to give it a go as I'm bored, and installed Steam ready for my HL2 freebie (Radeon purchase).

5 minutes until I can launch it...nearly time to see what all the buzz was about :p

I only recently played through Half Life for the first time. I just quit eventually because it was pretty dull. If you've experienced more recent FPS titles I don't think it will have much of an impact. Everything that was cool about it in 1998 has kind of been one-upped in other games since then.

I originally bought HL way back when just to play CS. About a year ago, I finally played through the game to the very end. I was suprised how long the game actually is, and how damn hard some of those later levels are. I had an absolute blast playing through it, though, especially...
the military portions of the game, where the aliens and marines would wage all-out war against each other... good stuff.

No major spoilers in here but if you dont want the progression of the game ruined dont look.

HL single player is such a hard slog to get through, its SO dull untill you get the marines coming in, then its SO GOOD, then you get past them and it gets really bad, then really wierd, then it ends.

Yeah, I'm kinda expecting that, but feel that a gap in my game-playing experiences will not be filled until I play it through. Playing it more to judge the gameplay experience seperated from the technical aspects.

Are any of the other free games on Steam worth a look?

Counterstrike: (No answer needed, I am aware of it's reputation :p)
Day of Defeat?
Team Fortress Classic? (This passed me by, Tribes/Tribes 2 consumed me)
Opposing Force?
Ricochet?

I didn't play Half-Life until 1999 or early 2000. For my money, I enjoyed Sierra's SWAT 3 more than I did HL in single-player.

I had fun with HL single-player, but thought it was overrated. Oddly, I thought the single-player in Halo (which is commonly said to be overrated) to be really engaging.

TFC is great. I probably played that more that CS years ago (I was even in a TFC clan). Day of Defeat isn't bad either, and I'm sure it has improved a lot since I last played it. I also really liked Opposing Force, but you should play most of the HL single player first. The way it fits in with HL makes OF even better.

HL is s nice game, I really liked the first half or so, than it got annoying IMO. After you finish it, make sure to download the speed run for it (search in here there's a thread about it). You will be amazed.
