I’m shocked, that’s actually a halfway decent list of GOTY nominees.

Balatro is fantastic, it says a lot that once it hit mobile and Apple Arcade my entire family got HOOKED on it (and they definitely are not gamers). Hell, my 70 year old dad got so addicted he completed every single challenge run in it lol. It’s more than “just a card game” and absolutely deserves to be nominated.

While I do wish they’d make a separate category for DLCs I don’t mind Shadow of the Erdtree getting nominated because it lapped pretty much everything else released this year. I view it more as a message to devs (especially western ones) that they need to start stepping their shit up than anything else. You can have issues with it being nominated but it’s pretty hard to deny that Shadow of the Erdtree had more content and was higher quality than the vast majority of games released this year.

Zero interest in the awards; we know the VGAs just a popularity contest and advertising platform, so what worth is their GOTY or any other award for that matter? Good luck to the nominees in any case.

My only interest in the VGAs are the new game reveals and maybe a new console reveal or two. As is probably the case for most folks.

What time is it?
I never said it's bad, it's really good. The idea of some dude in his basement with the most spaghetti code game ever mogging the AAA gaming industry is too funny to pass up though.

I wasn't pointing towards you. I just liked your idea of meltdowns but at least we get a preview of it in this thread with Stellar Blade getting rightfully snubbed.

It's not going to happen, but I so want Balatro to win this.
That would be an amazing FU to all the crappy AAAA games that bombed this year

Kinda surprised that Palworld didn't get nominated at all, considering the game's success throughout 2024. I guess Geoff playing it safe, and not trying to poke the bear, which is Nintendo, lol.

Also, Usada Pekora as best content creator? lol, I really hope that she won the award, because the reactions will going to be priceless.

Look, I loved Shadow of the Erdtree and think it is worthy, but seeing it being nominated and then thinking about how last year Phantom Liberty did not get nominated against the likes of Spider-Man 2 and Resident Evil 4...
Fucking meme awards

Best Role-Playing Game

  • Dragon’s Dogma 2
  • Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree
  • Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth
  • Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth
  • Metaphor: ReFantazio
Well, why is Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree in this category? From their point of view, this category was understaffed? If it wins, it will be the fun...

It's a fucking card game what else is there? I don't care about rogue like twist if all you do is still draw cards.

This is the most reductive nonsense i've read on here in a while.

It's like watching 5 minutes of Minecraft footage of someone hitting blocks over and over and concluding "durrrr it's just a fucking block breaking game what else is there??", when that footage says absolutely nothing about the decision making, strategy or goals that are going on behind the scenes.

meanwhile Stellar blade is unique world, music, years of development.
Imagine working on Stellar blade for 6 years and a fucking balatro takes your place.... and a dlc for other game

Card (and board) games are the purest expressions of game mechanics that exist. They live or die by how well they play, not by how flashy they look.

If a basic looking game like Balatro is being considered as a serious GOTY contender over AAA games with years to their name, people should be sitting up and taking note of why that is instead of bitching about it.

Maybe I’m in the minority. But I feel like COD this year deserved to be on the game of the year list.

It has a good campaign. Great multiplayer pvp. And great multiplayer pve. Pretty rare these days.

Well I think this is the first time I haven't played any of the GOTY noms. Well, technically I did play a bit of the demos for FF and Metaphor, just enough to confirm that they were Not For Me.

It's been a weird year. Not even sure what my GOTY would be at this point.

Most seem fine-ish, except the Elden Ring which should go to Space Marine or Stellar Blade. The Performance category is a joke and i hope Metaphor clears everything for that.

Veilguard being nominated only in "Innovation and Accessibility" is so funny. Even committee didn't gave a fuck about this game

It felt like a real pity fuck move for EA to give it that nod in a category that has a meaningless criteria and swept under the rug.

Controversy sells it seems, I see more chatter about "The Game Awards"tm this year than in previous years due to the possible inclusion of DLC in every category

Like him or not (I dont), this is clever marketing.
