The iOS Gaming |Thread5| From Zero to Gaming Hero

Question.

I'd like some app, or online database, that will track (i) what I own and (ii) an ongoing wishlist, and alert me to when things on my wishlist go on sale. And, most importantly, there has to be a way to automatically or easily have my lists updated when I make purchases from the App Store, and there must be some automatic way for the thing to auto-populate with all of my historical purchases.

AppShopper is pretty good. The problem is that I cannot afford to spend 10 hours going through and manually entering in everything into the database. And since I do not have every app stored on my HDD (i.e., most are just kept in the Cloud, as options to re-download) I can't use their little tool.

What do other people do to stay organized?

I've been out of the iOS scene for the past 3 months or so (last major game I got was Duels of the Planeswalkers), but I'm planning for a big trip and would like some things to play. Can anyone give me a rundown of notable games of the last few months?

Convince me on whether or not to get an iPad 4, I own an Iphone 4S. Go.

When you're at home, browsing NeoGAF or iOS gaming can be done in bed or on a couch comfortably with an iPad. You'll use your computer a lot less because the iPad is instant-on.

I was gonna use it more on campus when I don't have access to a computer/laptop (my laptop is too big), but that'd be an added plus.... dang.

The breaker is do you have a PC? I use my phone most of the time, and if I want to do something that doesn't work on the phone, I use the PC. My PC is always on and the phone works fine for browsing (Chrome on ios is awesome!)

The ipad doesn't get much of a look in besides as a media streamer (now the twitch app actually works). Mostly it is just to amuse the kids.

Perfect.

But 3.5" isn't a large enough screen for many games. For games like 10000000 and Zookeeper Battle it's perfect, but Lili and shit like that make games look glorious on an iPad screen. Get one to have the best of both worlds.

Also, I use my iPad on campus a shit ton too. It's perfect to slip in and out of my bag and lets me do tasks like check for canceled classes and send an email quickly and with ease. I don't own a laptop (they always die on me) but if I did I would only use it for typing papers and doing homework on campus since the iPad is admittedly bad at that (I have a Bluetooth keyboard with it at all times too)

I don't browse on my phone at home anymore because iPad browsing is so much more comfortable. The large screen makes a big difference.

Also, iPad gaming is WAY better than phone gaming. More screen is excellent for gaming. Also controls work way better when you aren't using a cramped phone screen.

Yup, this.

The only exception I'd say is for FPS games. I find the iPad a little too big for those control schemes and it feels unwieldy. However, the 3.5" of the iPhone (pre 5) is too small so the iPad mini may be perfect for that (or even the iP5/iPt5)

I find any action games pretty unplayable on an ipad. I agree the ipad mini is probably (possibly, don't have one of course) ideal. Not sure where that fits in the scheme of owning multiple devices though.

Yeah for gaming iPad mini all the way. You get all the benefits and pretty much no downsides except a smaller screen (browsing the web) and lower resolution (iPad 2 res).

I agree.

After owning both an ipad 2 and 3, I've come to the conclusion that I only really like playing strategy or adventure games on large tablets. Action games are better on smaller, lighter devices IMO. Most of my iOS gaming is now done on my iPod Touch 5, which is pretty damn nice BTW.

I think the Mini is cool, but still kinda big. Would really like to see a 5 - 6 inch iPad (or maybe Touch) someday. Something still easily pocketable, but easier on the eyesight.

Damn, Ithaqua is a bitch (Elder Sign). Going to have to actually step back and consider strategy because I've pretty easily beaten the rest of the game but keep dying at the very end on Ithaqua. Grrrr if only a few rolls had gone my way.

Along with what others have said, I'll add that having a pair of iPad 3's in the house has made our laptops and our newspaper and magazine subscriptions completely redundant. I don't game much on it outside of strategy or word and board games, but I do easily 90% of my web browsing and 100% of my book reading on the damn thing which accounts for an enormous of my weekly hours. My wife plays a fair few games on hers as well.

Not one regret; best ~AUD$1000 I've spent in a long time.

This is how I've beaten Ithaqua, several times now and with the best ending.
Do not forget the second part has (some very cool and nasty) random effects each cabin you visit and that there are multiple endings.

Load your characters with clues before the last sign, when you discover the cave.
Select characters with high stamina so, if something goes wrong, they will survive 1 more turn and be availbe as a free 'lock the skull' spell.
There is character, I forgot his name, that is able to produce skulls out of any sign...could be helpful too.

My experience.

I always had an iPhone and used it for...well everything at home and about.
Never really turned up a computer or a console anymore...mobile gaming (well...bed gaming) changed my life.
I never thought the iPad was that much more appealing since I was gifted an iPad 3 (I have an iPhone 4S too).

Since then...when I have both at disposal, the iPhone gets no love except for async games.
For the types of games I like the iPad is way better and much more immersive.
Everything else (email, photo edit, web browsing) is an order of magnitude better...much like using a PC with the portability and instant on advantages.

I love and always will love my iPhone...but right now I wouldn't give up my iPad for anything else.

For the first time I skipped the latest and greatest iPhone but I'm looking forward next iPad (the real one, not the 4).

Will try luxor.

I don't think eyelord will do.

It's my mother in law. She's currently addicted to zuma's revenge.
Anything else in the same roots? Doesn't have to be a clone.

See, I disagree with this entirely. The iPad is far too cumbersome and heavy to be comfortable to hold for a length of time. The screen is far too close to your face to enjoy what is going on screen for fast paced games. For things like Letterpress and The Room it's lovely to use but outside of that I hate it for gaming

Are there any decent turn based strategy games ala x-com for iOS? I'm really in the mood to play something like that after playing a bit of x-com but i'm not sure what's available.

A bit off topic, but has anyone experienced drastically worse sleep battery life since updating to iOS 6? Putting the iPad to sleep at night used to be maybe a 2% hit to the battery at worst but now I'm consistently losing 15% every 8 hours of sleep.

Another release week has passed.
Another Ubisoft utter disappointment.

I'm now pretty confident Ghost Recon has been cancelled and Clash of Heroes put on hold for whatever reason.

:(

Well...I guess this is an appropriate place to post this. I have a friend who is exceedingly smart & equally vindictive.

Also, I am terrible at Letterpress.

There is the (original) X-Com clone: Aliens vs Humans (I didn't played this yet).

The original creator of X-Com has publicly expressed his love for Hunters 2 (my personal GOTY).

If you want a more hardcore experience, Battle Academy (pricey but worth every penny, there is a lite version too).

There are many more great TBS in the AppStore (Ravenmark comes to mind) but not on unit level, at least that I played/found worthy.

How about we pretend it's been cancelled so people can stop asking about it? And then if it comes out, it's a lovely surprise.

Also, first of the month tomorrow!! Who has dibs on the new MONTHLY THREAD? (I really can't be arsed to do it myself but will if I have to)

Let's quit dilly dallying, pull our collective fingers out and join the monthly revolution!

Fixed ;)

It was a belter of a game on the 3DS, the desire to see it released will not be quenched. EVER.

It was cancelled because the iOS platforms cannot handle the pure superiority of a 3DS game. It was also cancelled because if it comes out, the TERRORISTS win. It was cancelled because Ubi realised that FPS games suck on iOS. It was cancelled in order to be retooled with 100% more Rayman. It's coming out, it's been retitled Modern Combat 3. It got stopped by Apple in cert because Steve Jobs is the baddie. It was cancelled because iOS games can only handle so much brown. It's been delayed until the new 3D iPhone comes out. It got cancelled because the higerups looked at how much UbiMobile were going to charge for it, and everyone subsequently lost their jobs. It got cancelled because nobody outside of 7 neckbeard forum dwellers cared about its existence. It came out 5 months ago - what, you didn't get it? Oh they must have removed it from the store. It was never even cancelled - it never existed in the first place.

Pick one :D

Would love to know this as well.

X-Com has been a delight would love a game like it that I can take around with me on my iPad.

Hunters 2 is the best.

Humans vs Aliens is a budget copy of the first Xcom and is hard as shit.

And that's pretty much all that's worth mentioning.

Can we pick them all?

Yeah sure, as long as it stops people asking the same bloody question every week!

Oh oh oh guise, is Infinity Blade Dungeons out yet?? Or Baldur's Gate???

No? Oh I'll come back next week then.

...

is FFT iPad out yet then??

Just seen the geekbench 2 marks for the 4th gen ipad, over 1700! compared to about 720 for the 3rd gen I have I feel really burned :(

Now I am torn about selling and buying the new model, that extra cpu looks like it could last a good 2 years before having to upgrade again, since the 3rd gen is really an ipad 2 with a new screen and that device is 2 years old.

That one's my favourite, although that was a great selection to choose from.
