The Official HP Touchpad Thread of $100 Digital Picture Frames

Seems the camera and mic will never be fixed, I have long given up on using android on my TP it is now just my Game of Thrones reader.

I'm a little worried the value will depreciate, with all the $200 and $150 Kindles, Nooks, and Nexuses, so I'm thinking of doing it sooner than later.

What's interesting is that the firesale was over a year ago, and no tablets have hit $100 since. The Playbook has been the closest (consistently on sale for $200, now $150) but it's 7 inches and doesn't run Android.

I'm pretty surprised the Touchpad has retained its value. A couple weeks ago I put it up for sale at $150 to gauge interest, and I got quite a few replies.

I still use mine everyday on Kang CM9.

Works wonderfully as a media device. I'd like someone smaller for reading one-handed, so I may consider the N7 down the road, but once the manufacturing defects are worked out.

Otherwise a great $100 spent.

Mine's still on WebOS.
So I found out that the Manga Reader is basically pirating Manga, lol
I was reading Vagabond and at some point there was one page with a release group nfo and greeting and such. I kind of suspected it since it lists some 3000 titles, but I didn't really follow or read manga up until recently + I spent money on the app itself..

I still don't trust the CM releases. CM7 tends to drain my phone's battery because of some bugs so I kinda feel like that would happen on the TP too.

Pretty sure all those Manga Apps work the same way, they get the images from the countless websites that already exist with Manga rips/translations.

Can someone recommend a good, recent nightly build of ICS? I'm still on the same the builds I installed back in April, and while it has served me very well (especially the battery life, which is far better than many other people's reports), I'm getting fed-up with the frequent issues with WiFi connectivity.

I'd rather pick a slightly older build that has been tested by a GAFer to have stable WiFi and good battery life than to simply get the latest nightly, cause I hear random builds have random issues, and I'm too lazy to update more than once (I've stuck with my current build for 5 months).

I'm on the latest nightly and I'm still having the WiFi disconnect problems I was having on the last official build release, but when it's connected everything seems to work a lot smoother - especially video streaming.

Hmmm, I guess it's probably a router issue and not a Touchpad/software issue. Perhaps we should be asking people who have no WiFi issues with ICS about their router model/settings.

It's strangely inconsistent for me, some days it's flawless all day, other days it keeps disconnecting every few minutes.

I haven't been paying attention for ages now, but what's the status on JB on the touchpad, from skimming the thread I'm not seeing people using it, is there news about it?
My USB cable bonked out and just got a replacement and would like to get this going again

The very first? Wow, upgrade now! :p

I forgot if one of the updates required a wiping of the data. In any case, you should:
0) Download the nightly HERE
1) Boot to clockworkmod recovery and do the next steps
2) Do a full backup
3) Install the downloaded nightly zip from sd card
4) clear cache and dalvik cache
5) reboot and enjoy.

If you have problems, go back into clockworkmod and clear the data, too. You will lose your Android apps and app data, but not SD card contents (including app data on SD card).

Thank you for this, will be doing it tonight.

Not sure what the prices are in the US, but in Canada the Blackberry Playbook has finally dropped to $100. I don't think this will set off a chain reaction since the PB is kind of old and not exactly competing with other Android/iOS tablets, but it's nice to see something that's hit the $100 price point.

I saw it, I want a Nexus 7 mostly because I find my TP to be to big to haul around on the train to surf and watch video's but for $100 it is pretty hard to pass up

Would you guys recommend selling the TP with android installed on it? It seems to be worth more money that way but it's glitch and not newbie friendly so I'm worried about technical issues after the sale and negative feedback.

I was on the 6/29 build for quite a while with real good battery life. Then a little while ago, things just started to randomly go downhill. Even with reboots I couldn't get it stable again.

So I downloaded 8/19 build, cleared both caches, installed, and it's been good ever since (or as good as battery life gets). Maybe it's clearing the cache the resets the problem? No idea. But even a stable build can turn on you for whatever reason.

The whole wifi thing, I thought, was settled long ago. It really does prefer Linux based routers. If you can flash your router to something like Tomato or DD-WRT, your issues would most likely go away.

There are people on craigslist offering to install Android on TP's for $40. :lol

Maybe you should specify in your ad that it has Android but the builds are still being worked on.

I still think you'd get more interest if Android was installed as opposed to just webOS. People are inherently lazy and if they see you've done the "hard work" for them they'd be more willing to buy it.

Can't it be set so that it reboots into WebOS without the user manually choosing Android? That would seem to be the best of both worlds as it would be fool proof for those not particularly tech savvy, while Android ready for buyers that are.

Thanks for the info on the builds. I'll try clearing cache.

As for WiFi, my router is flashed with DD-WRT... it's Linksys E2000, so lots of configuration options, and I remember experimenting with bridging two routers together and other stuff, so I changed a lot of settings from their default values (that was before I got the TP). Not sure if it's worth trying to reset everything to firmware defaults.

I have the same exact router (no DD-WRT though). Ever since updating to the 7-7 Nightly (what I'm still running now), my TP has been free of wifi problems.

I mean, before upgrading to the nightly, it was utter hell. Disconnected all the time and they were the type of disconnects that would require you to forget your network -> shut off the wifi connection (airplane mode) ->then reconnect to home network after putting in the password.

Oh, and the battery life is purely fantastic for me still. As per my post a few months ago, the battery is still only draining at about half a percentage each hour in sleep mode since I'm now able to have my wifi shut off during sleep and reconnect after a second or two when it's turned back on.

So give 7-7 a try. Though I would suggest also trying one of the August builds. I was actually thinking of doing that this weekend.

That's very encouraging, thanks!

Have to say that I'm still impressed with how stable cm9 is. They have came a long way. Tomorrow I'm going to move from the Aug 19 to Sep 16 build and will see how it runs. I use Nova launcher and set both animation speeds to faster. I also used antutu cpu master to OC to 1500 mhz amd could push it to 1700 if I want. The only time I get lag is when I bring up all apps. On the home screens there is no lag and for some reason it seems to animate smoother in landscape mode compared to portrait (not saying there is lag in portrait). I did get some lag occasionally in portrait mode when I had the plume widget on one home screen, but it was extremely minimal.

Stock browser destroys chrome on this tablet by far. The performance of the tablet in general is not consistent as the iPad 2, but from what I've witnessed 70‰ of the time it's nearly at the same level. It's going to be great to see what jellybean brings if they do figure out hw acceleration and sound.

If you haven't been flashing the latest nightlies, do so! This has been excellent for general browsing, email, YouTube, games, and Netflix.

Taking pictures now works with the camera: http://rootzwiki.com/topic/34482-unofficial-cm9-with-working-camera/

(No skype yet)

Damn, I think that it's very possible that we get the camera fully working and CM10 ported by November.

IT LIVES.

kind of.

Anyways, I'm pretty excited about this. I don't really use my touchpad that often, but it sits on my work desktop like a clock and is handy for meetings and whatnot. Still, pretty excited that people are still poking away at it, and will gladly upgrade to JB/CM10 when something near stable comes out.

I hate it that ICS doesn't disable wi-fi when the screen is off.

I tried Juice Defender but it's fairly slow to re-enable connectivity.

How hard is it to write a simple line of code?

When screen=off, wifi=off

It does. Just enable it in the options.

It takes 1 or 2 minutes though but I think that's intentional, probably in case the screen turns off by mistake.

I'm trying an app called BatteryFu now. Hopefully it's the solution to my problems.

You don't need extra apps...

Help out the informed please.

-If I installed Android, what version should I go with now and what guide should I use these days? I have never installed it before on my TP, only the various other addons like to overclock and different features like that.

-In the version of Android you would recommend, what is still NOT working? What would I miss out on after having been using the TP as is for so long? Would I still be able to load videos into my TP and use the Kalemsoft player to watch them when I want? That, and the internet, are the two main things I even use my TP for, but I use it every single day.

Has anybody tried the latest builds?

http://get.cm/?device=tenderloin

I check and update to the nightly every once in a while (when I remember), and I'm currently running the 9/23 nightly I think. I honestly can't say I've noticed any major differences between any of them dating back like 3 months, but I don't do a whole lot with mine - check Gmail, Google Reader, Netflix, and occasional web browsing is about it.

CM9 is only getting bugfixes now, no new features. I haven't been following what Touchpad specific work has happened recently, but I'd assume it would be on Jelly Bean rather than ICS. So I wouldn't expect one nightly build being different to another from now on.

Has anyone recently updated the YouTube app in ICS? I was reading many negative reviews for the latest version so I decided not to update... I'm not even sure if the updated UI affects the tablet version of the app or is it only the phone app that got a big facelift.
