The PS5 disc drive stock situation is embarrassing

I’m not sure how it’s outside of the UK but it’s a joke over here.

Sony have just released their premium console for £700 and it’s impossible to find a PS5 disc drive instock anywhere.

Some stores haven’t had stock in weeks.

The only way to get one now is by paying like £180 off Ebay when the RRP is £100.

Can’t believe this wasn’t sorted before launch.

It’s bad enough the Pro doesn’t come with a disc drive to begin but this is something else.

Thinking Sony is pulling a Nintendo with limiting supply. Some kind of experiment to see how the public reacts so they can nickel and dime the PS6. They'll probably sell the power cable for it separate. Need a controller for it? $89.99. Want 60fps with that 4k game? Gotta subscribe! That's the type of things these companies talk about in their meetings. That's the type of industry they are pushing for. Not all, but many.

Sony wants you to buy thier games digitally more than physically which make me fear that they gonna pull the same crap with PS6.

At least I can easily ignore Pro because it’s not really new system, I won’t miss out on games if I don’t get Pro.

With PS6 is different story, I hope they don't fucking do this again.

Unfortunately it was predictable, production likely wasn't adjusted beforehand to have a better idea of actual Pro/disc demand and to avoid being left with tons of unsold add-ons which are difficult to resell if people just don't need/want them.
This is why I bought mine in September.
Hopefully they sort out things quickly for people affected.

It's just sony been remarably shit in stocking items in retail spaces. I remember the move controller situation when PSVR was in full swing, for months and months you couldn't get hold of them unless you were prepared to pay hundreds for them as all stock vanished and scalpers took over.

Also the dualsense edge stick modules have been out of stock for months

It should be illegal to release hardware that can have replaceable hardware parts and then only manufacture a small amount of that hardware.

ESPECIALLY the stick modules for the dualsense edge... It just reeks of anti-consumer.

The PS5 slim digital will remain on sale for the next 4 years at the very least, so there’s really no way they have ever been stuck with unsold inventory

We're suckers? They're suckers for not having stock to sell when people are trying to buy something from them. Same with the Dualsense Edge stick module stock. Has nothing to do with the "artificial scarcity" or digital store either (what's the stick modules excuse?). It's high demand and scalpers trying to take advantage of the situation pre-launch. Just wait until new stock comes and scalpers would have to offload their stock later at reduced prices too.

There’s no excuse for Sony here. The lack of communication clearly shows they no longer prioritize keeping players engaged. It feels like they’re slowly conditioning people to accept a lesser experience as PlayStation gamers. Their poor communication around exclusives and gradual shifts in policy seem aimed at changing players' perspectives to take advantage of them. Sony post-2020 just isn’t the same. Once this generation ends, I’m done with their ecosystem—PC and Switch are the way to go.

The problem with those is not availability from Sony. You can find a ton of stick modules and disc drives for sale. As far as Sony is concerned, they're hitting their sales targets with those. Problem is they're all for sale on Ebay from people who set up bots to buy them.

Good news is Sony(and Nintendo) knows that's a problem, and it looks like they're working on fixing it. But it's not an easy fix.

The reason behind this seems to be their push to drive up revenue by selling more of their poorly made controllers. Having limited stock on the “solution” to a badly designed product is incredibly frustrating. I’ve had three controllers this generation alone with stick drift issues. Imagine buying an overpriced pro controller just to avoid replacing the whole controller repeatedly, only to find that the solution they promised isn’t even available. At this point, it feels almost like robbery.

Theres nothing "good guy" about any company trying to make money but in this case they're not "suckering" anyone by not selling products and not making said profit. It's a scalper situation and poor planning in terms of accounting for them in supply. Same thing happened even for the PS5 charging dock. Just wait for supply to come in and Sonys "evil plan" is foiled.

Why make the Edge have removable sticks in the first place then and increase BOM cost? Just make an edge without removable sticks and "poorly made". These crazy conspiracies make no sense.

Exactly it's the damn idiot scalpers who are disrupting the supply chain.

Sure there is if you raise production to a level that is higher than demand.
Then you'd have to halt production but switching production up and down costs a lot of money, it doesn't come for free and you need to renegotiate contracts with suppliers.
And you don't raise production for a situation that you probably expect to last for a couple of months for the launch of a new niche console.
Sucks for people affected though that's undeniable but there's a reason most people already bought a drive in September, scalpers also have a role in this.

Lol you're mentioning stuff that isn't even related to this topic.
Looking at your post history it is difficult to believe you ever cared except for trying to downplay whatever they do.
In any case they will survive without you given their success.

It was their solution for those "enthusiastic" players with enough money and an excuse for not improving the shitty build quality of their dualsense. It's insanity that Nintendo got shit for theirs while the dualsense is 10 times worse. It's robbery on each front.

But this is shit. Clearly the only people getting Pro are current PS5 owners, most of whom were day 1 adopters. Keeping them from playing their digital games due to their long term goals is shit. They are losing customers as it is so pissing off the ones who upgrade is moronic.

Yes everything is fine and PlayStation player never had better value than this generation 🤣🤣. Jesus some of you. There are loads of companys surviving which nickel and dimme their customers and are anti consumer as fuck so if their surviving is all you need to be happy customer than everything is fine.

I kind of agree. What company doesn't want to actually sell their products and make money? Not everything has to be a conspiracy when incompetence can explain it. Are some people here really suggesting that the Sony that couldn't foresee Concord failing when it was so obvious actually has an evil plan in motion for the next 5-10 years that starts with not selling their own products?

But they profit of not selling this specific item. More and more players might get used to digital only solution and have less choice to buy games going forward on a higher price on top if it since physical games is alot of times cheaper even at launch.

Why not communicate it better that they will revamp the production to meet demand to just stay a little bit more patience. Just nothing.

Pretty much their plan all along, they didn't make many disc drives for slim because why would they? Everyone interested in DD had entire SKU to buy with DD (80% consoles sold with DD...), drive was only for people that regretted buying DE.

But now they release only one SKU of their new machine, the most hardcore players want and use disc drives (plus they already have physical games) and there aren't any disc drives on the market...

Buy overpriced digital games or go fuck yourself - this is message from Sony to their most loyal fans.

So you are saying Sony don't want to sell you things now? They aren't limiting supply, there was a just very high demand, and that is a good thing, it will show Sony we aren't yet ready for a digital generation. It's like that in the UK especially because we can get games physical lower than RRP

It's mostly the usual suspects in here with those "evil plan" ideas. It's the dumbest conspiracy if you think about it too. Why would Sony want to prevent people with physical libraries from playing their games? Say they wanted to prevent new users. A new user can pay £180 for the plentiful scalper stock that is out there instead of £100 for the RRP Sony is charging and their "digital future" plan is foiled. So they think Sony is preventing people from playing their physical library for £80.Why wouldn't Sony just price it at £180 and not have stock issues, and even gain £80 more from its sale instead of it going to a scalper.

Pretty much their plan all along, they didn't make many disc drives for slim because why would they?

The disc drive was readily available before the PS5 Pro release. I don't know where you're getting this silly idea from. If anybody wanted a drive for their slim they could have easily bought it prior to PS5 Pro. In fact some warned people to buy it while it was readily available running up to the pro release due to scalpers and increased demand.

As soon as PS5 pro was announced officially. I run to my local store and bought both DD and a stand. Few days later. There weren't any around and still not available in Australia through both online and retail.

There is no conspiracy, they want people to buy digital games over physical games - they get more money and consumers can't sell them.

I love idea of "there was ton of disc drives, why didn't you buy one?"

The day Cerny announced console (the day we knew for the first time about only DE) i checked for disc drives where I live - no disc drives at retail, only overpriced ones on Allegro (works like ebay).

It reminds me of this meme:

I also couldn't get a portal for several months. What's the latest conspiracy theory about that?

Sony is incompetent.

Like the usual suspects who excuse any shitty behavior from a company like Sony ;).

People coming up with conspiracies are making me laugh.

Sony is making a fortune with every disc drive sold. That shit must cost them 10 dollars to make and ship. It’s in their interest to sell them. People who want to buy physical will keep buying physical and will wait to get a drive.

If people aren’t buying the Pro because there are no drives available then Sony loses. This is just a supply fuck up. When the PS6 releases without a drive then we can talk.

Test bed if the pro is successful I would highly doubt the ps6 having the option at all.

Thank you, exactly what I have been saying. There's no conspiracy when incompetence explains it.

If they weren't pushing people people into digital they would have released 2 SKUs of Pro. They would make even more money on 800$ version - but they choose not to.

They would have far more to lose than gain in the era of backwards compatibility and people carrying their entire libraries across generations. Again, some really hot takes in here.

Drives being out of stock means people are buying them, scalpers are scalping them etc. So they're in very high demand, which makes physical media pretty safe for at least one more generation.
