TheGamer: With 104 Awards, Astro Bot Now Has More GOTYs Than Any Other Platformer

This is egregious.

It's no better than Crash Bandicoot 3 from the 90s in platforming chops.

Let alone any 3d Mario from Sunshine and up.

Typical Nintendo fan: It COULDN'T be better because its name is not MARIO!!

That's great for Astro Bot, though the article seems to exist only to try and rile up Nintendo fans? Like, most GOTY awards of any platformer* (*since 2013) when really the only other major contender here is Super Mario Odyssey, which would've walked away with 100+ awards if it didn't release the same year as another generational Nintendo game.

Let Sony fanboys have their oh-so-desperately needed 5 minutes of fame, after Elden Ring wiped the floor with both God of War and Horizon 3 years ago, while Baldur's Gate 3 and Tears of the Kingdom destroyed Spiderman 2 in 2023.
Lol. Honestly, if I was Sony I wouldn't be mad having those three games in my first party portfolio going up against 3rd parties. Us gamers win in the end anyways. But this statement screams people low key see Sony as the standard despite Nintendo being right there also for years.

It isn't but Mario losses out.

Is what it is.
look, I'm just saying, it's not apples-to-apples and needs context.

It's like, if you follow football, people were saying Saquon Barkley could break Eric Dickerson's recored for yards in a season. Except if he did so, he would have done it in a 17 game season, whereas Dickerson did it in a 16 game season, and he broke a record that OJ Simpson set in a 14 game season.

The records are not equivalent.

I'm not saying they are equivalent. Just things have changed. I'm sure 25 years from now another platformer will beat out astro due to how many outlets select it as goty.

So what you're telling me is this style of game is not "out of fashion" at all and major developers that used to release this type of game should actually do so instead of seeking some blue ocean? Or at minimum continue to cater to both?

I still have yet to play the full retail game, but I absolutely loved the pack in on Ps5... It made me nostalgic for the days of pack in games, getting the Genesis bundled with Sonic, SNES with Mario, etc... An amazing game to play right away.

Is it the best 3d platformer then?

If not, system is useless and not worth paying attention to.

Though fanboys fighting over it is amusing.

Under that thought we can say then that God of War "wiped the floor" with RDR2 and Monster Hunter World in 2018 or that TLOU2 did it with Doom Eternal or Animal Crossing, you don't always win...but Sony and Nintendo almost every year have something goty quality to offer, something that Xbox can't say.

It Takes Two being the previous record holder says all ya need to know, lol (that's a padded 88 meta/open critic game - scored by the same people that give these participation awards to copy cats - "beating" games with like 90-97 - which could be higher without certain hater clickbait outliers too).

How is that? ITT is amazing, by far the best co-op game I've ever played.

Great game, but M64, Galaxy 1,2, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, Sunshine, and Odyssey are better.

No need to shit no either game, but yall fucking crazy.

First and foremost, the metric you pick for which game is best is how many GOTY awards it got?

Insane.

You do realize that this metric is influenced by:

1. Other games that released in the same year.
2. Total number of sites that give goty awards the year the game releases

So there were few tentpoles last year, so of course Astro won in a ton of places. What came out the year Odyssey did? Was it BotW?

Second, the further back in time you go the less goty awards there are to hand out. So as we proceed, this record will continue to be broken.

Why did you not simply use the Metacritic score as the metric to determine which one was better?

I know why you didn't use popularity. Because Astrobot sold like shit, did it not? Well? Now if you will recall, I am the one always touting it as an evergreen title. You know as well as I do that Astro will keep selling well over the years, but to be this braggadocios about it today? No child.

Astro was great but it was missing the ability to do more moves than just hump and hover. The next one needs to add in dives, triple jumps, and all the stuff Mario can do. Then it will be on par. Get out of here with this silly shit.

It won all the GOTY awards because the current landscape is so utterly devoid of quality games, especially platformers.

Astrobot has charm, the platforming itself is nothing special.

The Astro games are the only 3D platformers I can remember where I honestly thought, "this is absolutely just as good as Mario" since Mario 64 released.
