It's a well-written review, too. Chick goes into considerable detail on the aspects of the game he did and didn't enjoy, and compares what he perceives as the game's failings to how he felt the studio's previous game (which he offers glowing praise to throughout) managed them.

There's nothing at all about the written review that indicates he was just fishing for clicks, or whatever the charge is people are throwing at him. It was a highly critical but honest appraisal.

I personally rarely agree with Chick's reviews - his opinions are in fact usually far divorced from my own - but I find his dissenting opinions interesting to read. A homogeneous game reviewing culture isn't very worthwhile.
 
I actually admire Tom Chick somewhat for not using the 7-10 scale. I think he might be being a little too harsh though, like he's somehow trying to return balance to the unvierse or something. Like contrary is the cure. Maybe it's just honest opinion, I have no idea I don't know the guy.

He often comes across like he knows best too, which doesn't help, but he does always reason his scores.

No EDGE review. No Wolfenstein either though, and the only update to the said is some EQ Landmark mag rehash. Maybe the site really is being shuttered...

Reviews have sold me. Looks cool, some things I'm not sure of, but I loved Bastion, so I'll check this out on PS4.

Damn you Supergiant, I have studying to do..

I think he usually communicates pretty well, what he doesn't like about a game. Take something like his Last of Us or Uncharted 3 reviews and I immediately understood what he felt was wrong about those games. IMO that makes for much more interesting reviews than most, even if the scores themselves deviate from everyone else or I don't agree with him.

Just read his review and he poses some very interesting questions regarding the quality of the game. Rip-off the impressive aesthetic veneer and it seems there are some issues going on that Transistor does not execute on as boldly as the artstyle. Without playing it, I can't sympathize or agree yet, but his critiques do resonate and would bother me as well until proven. If you are a shallow enough gamer that pretty visuals and a stunning soundtrack are enough to override any potential pitfalls in other aspects of game execution, then I can see why reading the review is an unnecessary formality while stating trite opinions about the formation of his own.

Tom did have a very glowing Bastion review, possibly the MOST glowing one(arguably tainting his disappointment in Transistor further), and that was a game I felt held severe retention issues. So not sure what to think, but I am just as wary about the glowing reviews given how rare the aggregate matches with my own thoughts on releases these past few years.

It is incredible isn't it. I turned in three games for 121 dollars (Profitable) and plan on using the money towards games that truly deserve day one purchases.
 
When I'm back from honeymoon and the wife is unpacking I'm buying this. So happy for the reviews the game is picking up so far, but even if they weren't as good as they are I would pick up anyway as I have so much faith in the development team
 
Tom Chick reviews need to be left out of these threads. He's just a troll. He just wants to be the Armond White of the video game world, I feel.

Hmm...this critique is interesting because Supergiant has described the way that they design their games. They work on the gameplay in and of itself sans any art direction for a while so that it doesn't change their perception of it. They talked about this at length in regards to Bastion's development.

Yea, all those launch titles were a mixed bag. Some game purchases were simply purchases that came about because I NEEDED something different to put into my PS4. Now that there is some variety to be had, I can spend my money on stuff I'll really enjoy. Woo-hoo, console launches!

Don't really see this as 'champoning'

Just giving people information. I find with many recent releases, the console version is heavily marketed by the manufacturers and many people fail to realize there is a PC version even available.

See: Titanfall, Transistor, etc.

It's his library of reviews. He has a history of some really off-base crap.

Edit: I'm not saying his review is definitely wrong here, as I've only played the game at E3, I'm just saying that in general his reviews have a tendency to rile people up.
 
Too many good games now... and not enough time! This fall is really going to be hard to get through without getting a large backlog. I already have a ps4 backlog now.

Sorry, but presentation matters. This is a visual mediu. We should not ignorenother problems concerning mecanics but is still a valid point to like a game.

I think he's just a dude who's really opinionated.

I have a lot of controversial opinions about certain games, and judging from that huge "controversial opinion" thread here, a lot of people do. It's possible after Bastion, he was pretty disappointed.

2/5 just means he didn't like it.

I was thinking the same thing lol.

I will get it on PS4. DS4 + TV = definitive edition

Oh, and love the audio from the controller btw. ;)
