[UK] Apple pulls data protection tool after UK government security row

Wow this UK government is so embarrassing and infuriating its unreal. 4 more years of these labour fucks...
We all have to suffer while all the illegall immigrants are loving life once they hit UK shores. Such a soft country now, they forget the fundamental thing.
Charity begins at home....

I have this enabled, curious what they'll do as they can't remotely disable it, they'll have to give us a deadline to turn it off or lose access to the data forever.

What's stopping criminals from just encrypting stuff before they upload it to the cloud? Fuck all, this is just the government wanting power over its population

Isn't Apple "privacy/encryption" a fake misnomer in the first place? I'm pretty sure I read Tim Apple already scans every file you interface with on any Apple device/Apple account to see if it's illegal piracy or illegal porn?

Jesus, UK, don't give Trump any ideas please. One of the only reasons I continue to buy Apple products is because of their security and unwillingness to bend the knee to the government. I will be so fucking pissed if this happens in America.

I believe that's entirely done on-device, and it's opt-in. And they're only searching for child sexual abuse material.

And frankly, if someone has that shit on their phone, I'm okay giving up the slightest amount of privacy to help catch those people.

I understand your sentiment, but unfortunately encryption doesn't work that way. Either it's secure or it's not. As far as I know, apple devices do perform client side scanning, but don't upload hashes unless you opt in or use icloud with E2EE disabled. You can tell the scanning works by how it organizes your photos. Here's a brax video on it for those interested

Holy crap. I remember the fbi throwing bitch fits cause apple wouldn't let them access shit from the Boston marathon bombers phones.

More scary news

I hate the whole Trump administration but JD Vance was 100% on point with his speech a couple of weeks back. There is no free speech in Europe and the uk and mass immigration is as much of a threat as Russia is.

Shame on Apple.
Man what the fuck is going on in the UK?

What is happening over there?
Totalitarianism by the state over their people. Being overrun by Islamist and the government only cares about the memes you share. The Torres were so bad that the people elected an even worse leader under labor. Traditional Brit's are being crushed so the ruling elite can establish a ruling state.

In before lock.

Decades-long infiltration of civil service bodies by leftist academia, and a really nasty ultra-socialist government granted far too much power due to record-breakingly low voter turnout run by a staunch communist, mired in corruption, hypocrisy, lies and scandal. Shit's fucked for the next four years at least.

Eroding and stripping the populous of their rights and finances wasn't in their manifesto believe it or not.

They barely had a manifesto. The main thrust of their campaign was 'the Tories are shit', which they were of course, but sadly it worked. And the few pledges they did make have all been either reneged on, or they've done the complete fucking opposite. Evil people.

As an American it's really scary seeing what's going on in Europe. This is a very dangerous path they're going down. In this globalist era where companies, specifically media, have to contend with the laws of so many different nations, it's easy to imagine them bending the knee at some point just out of convenience and this effecting us in the states in a big way as well. That's not to say things are perfect now, but we have significantly more free speech protections than Europe at this point. Obviously I don't want to get political, but it was atleast heartening to see The Vice President harshly condemn them recently. I really hope it was more than just rhetoric.

I saw the 60 minutes thing on German censorship recently. This blonde hair blue eyed lady(it's honestly comical), defending free speech crackdowns by saying that….half of the population are afraid to debate online because they're scared of being insulted, and this will fix that…..when I'm sure the reality is that people are afraid to debate because they don't want to get fined, their phone stolen or arrested. Absolute insanity. Using the effects of the crackdown to justify the crackdown.

Sorry, aren't we both saying the same thing? I just watched his whole video (which was annoyingly filled with more speculation than I personally care for), and it sounds like they were proposing only sending hashes, not raw photo data. And that data would still be sent securely with E2EE.

But this is all moot. They completely abandoned this in 2021 and currently only scan photos if someone explicitly opts in to non-encrypted iCloud, and then they do it server-side.

Any other image recognition for things like sorting/searching happen entirely on-device.

Yeah he can ramble a bit. You said you were willing to give up privacy for the cause, I'm just stating there's no true way to do that. Even if you send hashes over an encrypted connection, it's still getting reviewed one way or another, which is not in your hands. False positives can happen too.

I don't have a clear answer for solving this issue, because it's basically a trolly problem, but I lean more in the direction of privacy.

What was the what'sapp leaks?

A Labour MP group chat got leaked with comments joking about constituents dying, and antisemitic comments, antisemitism being a long-running trend within the party. It's why previous leader Corbyn was investigated and ousted.

Giving/receiving backhanders when they pledged to end cronyism, multiple lies regarding previous jobs, breaking Covid lockdown rules, drunkenly assaulting constituents in the street (yes this really happened) - it's just scandal after scandal, week after week, after less than a year in power. They really are a party of scumbags.
