They are introducing guidelines for 3rd party manufacturers on how to use display their logos on their products

This essentially means Valve is open to working with 3rd party hardware manufacturers to integrate their stuffs (SteamOS, SteamLink, SteamVR, Steam client) to their hardware products and have the logos displayed appropriately

This is pretty awesome.

We are going to see more and more products pushing to the broader landscape that runs Steam. Excellent for end users.

They've been late on PC gaming in general so I won't be surprised if they're out-of-position on this initiative too. Which could be very troublesome for them since Valve has Steam as a market asset, and will prefer migration to Steam OS for PC gaming over Windows.

Still, MS do have their money as its own advantage; if they can manage to drum up enough interest, they can get the necessary volume out there quickly. But that same theoretical advantage has also existed for Game Pass and, well, that service hasn't been growing much at all over the past two years.

So, this is an Xbox moment! Momentum is huge and rising! 💪😉

I would love to see more handhelds to officially support SteamOS. And of course it would be great to see more Steam VR headsets as well.
 
Valve is moving into hardware while Microsoft is moving out.

Actually MS is being forced out and Valve just sees the opening.

What's Sony got to do with it? They are strictly a third party publisher when it comes to PC. Microsoft owns Windows and is still falling further behind Steam. They deserve to be kicked.

I'm still looking for a blurry screenshot of a gaming OS from Microsoft. Nothing. Absolutely Nothing.

The xbox app got updated yesturday, The usual Tuesday update. Nothing changed removed or added. But it got an update. Yay
 
It's worse than Microsoft being late to pc. They were the kings of pc gaming in the 90s but they dumped it ALL to shift to the Xbox. Then they tried to force Xbox live gold on to pc and bombed, and by that point steam was taking over. Look how those bets in Xbox paid off now? They are stupid and screwed it up like they screw up every consumer product line they have. MS deserves to lose.
 
Microsoft's gaming division is so fucked:
- it's losing the console war against Playstation and Nintendo
- Gabe is dominating in his operating system
- Smartphones are lost anyway.

Last big update to the Xbox app that I recall was the "compact mode". That was added over a year ago. We are just talking about updates to a gotdang app here. Meanwhile, Valve is taking steps to roll out their own Linux distro (well....a variant of Arch anyway).

Let's not cream ourselves over well designed brand guidelines here. And as much fun as it is watching MS/Xbox flail about - and it's very fun! - there's a Windows logo on nearly every PC(including the Lenovo and ASUS handhelds) you can buy today.

What this likely means if you're going to see one of those Steam logos next to the AMD and Windows 11 logos on boxes. Nothing has changed between last week and today.

Microsoft is not going to create a separate OS just for gaming. They'll add a new UI overlay that looks like the Xbox App on top of Windows in certain configurations. Exactly what Steam is doing with SteamOS.
 
Look forward to the handhelds with the z2 extreme, an OLED, and SteamOS native support. I'm not buying shit if it's not on Steam anymore.
 
People saying xbox late to their own party, but maybe this is the only party they planned - all xboxes going forward having that logo on them and being Steam-ready, they're a massive 3rd party after all:

MS losing again. What else is new.

Their only chance of maintaining a platform at this point is to buy more huge publishers and IP so they can then delist from Steam and make everything Windows exclusive. I'm actually quite certain this is the long term plan.

Not from last week, but the logo below is a significant change and it won't have a Windows logo next to it.

Xbox on Windows is held back by not being more important than CoPilot+ or Office or whatever else Microsoft subscription service is trying to sell. I'm sure current Xbox folks would want a minimal gaming Windows that isn't like a locked down Xbox like a minimal Linux distro that you can install anything like SteamOS but that is not supportive of CoPilot+, O365, OneDrive, etc

Yes, but not an Xbox logo which is the idea that they keep pushing for taking over the gaming market. Let's look at their head-to-head with Steam vs the Windows store. MS ended up having to put their games on Steam.

It is starting to look like MS has put themselves in a tough spot. At this point, I believe their best move is to go full on third party on software with some Xbox branding partners for PC and handhelds. They've lost the console space because they wanted to dominate it instead of focusing on what made Xbox consoles great.

Yeah that would be sweet. MS sells a system that runs Steam OS and has a Steam store and no Xbox branding except the power on logo?

It might. We don't know yet if Valve is going with a "if you have SteamOS on the device you can't run any other OS". Based on how they're treating it right now, I don't know if they would. If they don't stipulate that, you will see devices with both the Windows/Xbox logo and this one on devices where you can switch between the two.

I still think Xbox will get their lunch eaten though.

Linux still has some hurdles with being a consumer OS, but for the gaming enthusiasts, I can see it making some headway. I'm planning on being there day one when SteamOS is released publicly by Valve as long as the Nvidia support is there.

Valve will not have requirements like that. Even with Steam Deck they have released drivers for people who want to install Windows. But I do not think device manufacturers are going to dual boot Windows and Steam out of the box, regardless. They will let folks do that on their own. So it will either be Steam or Windows, but not both, on the the box.
 
SteamOS becoming more common is awesome for getting PC closer to the console ease of use. I wonder if Valve will try another go at SteamMachines, i really think they can now with their new SteamOS.
Imagine if they offered like 3 PC presets at $500, $700, $1000. They could really start chipping away at console userbase if they offer competitive price/perf.
