Video Gamers United

We are pleased to announce that The Video Gamers United Conference is coming to Washington DC August 16th & 17th 2014! VGU is a gaming festival for gamers of all genres and ages to come together and celebrate the culture of gaming. We are bringing together not only Console gamers but PC and Mobile gamers as well. This is the ONLY Convention of its kind in the Mid- Atlantic or Southeast regions.

VGU Con will take place in the nations capital at the beautiful Walter E. Washington Convention Center. The Hall itself is over 3 football fields long with state of the art video and audio equipment. There are digital monitors thru out the facility along with a new bluetooth connection that will allow attendees to download the layout of the floor plan in conjunction to their location.

This will be a gamers heaven where not only will you get to see some of the newest games and tech coming out BUT get to play it as well.

VGU is a gaming festival for gamers of all genres and ages to come together and celebrate the culture of gaming. We are bringing together the top gamers, developers and minds in the video gaming industry. Some conventions are only open to businesses within the video gaming industry and because of this gamers are forced to watch the latest news online. This results in gamers missing out on the fun and excitement of seeing their favorite titles previewed. Well the VGU Con is going to bridge that gap by bringing to the nations capital a con where we will have all the excitement of an industry event, but it will be open to all gamers young and old. If that’s not enough, we will also have some of your favorite celebrities and athletes playing selected gamers like you, in our celebrity gaming challenge. Some of the events that will take place at VGU are:
  • Panel Discussions
  • Keynote Speakers
  • Video Game Demos
  • Gaming Tournaments
  • Celebrity Charity Event
  • Cosplay Contests
  • Free To Play Arcade
  • & More!

I found an article about a Super Smash Tournament in the Washington Express (local free newspaper in DC area) which led to this website. I'd go if I didn't have to move into my new apartment that weekend. If there are some GAFfers in the area and want to go, the information is here.

Best mode of travel?
Metro rail via Green or Yellow lines to Mt. Vernon Square station.
If driving in to the DC area:
From Virginia - Go to Huntington Metro Station (Yellow line), free parking on weekends. Take the train to Mt. Vernon Square
From MD (all points of north Prince George's county and beyond) - Go to Greenbelt Metro Station, free parking on weekends. Take the train to Mt. Vernon Square
(all points south PG - Clinton, MD going towards St. Charles County and beyond) - Go to Branch Ave Metro Station, free parking on weekends. Take the train to Mt. Vernon Square.

Once at Mt. Vernon Square Metro Station, you will literally be at the Washington Convention Center.

Any other info, check the website. Any info concerning the DC metro system, I'll do my best to help. If you don't wanna wait for me or any GAF members in the DC metro area to help, you can go to www.wmata.com for more info.

Doesn't this coincide with Pokemon world championship?
If you'rw in the area, Pokemon symphonic evolution is the 15th and 16th, so there's even more to do.

They've actually been advertising this on the radio and on the metro, which surprised me. I can't recall any video game conventions that have been advertised like this.

I'm thinking of going, but I just wonder if it will be any good. This would be my first video game convention.

Hey guys let's do a first time convention in the same time a free pokemon event is going, surely thing will work out right guys?

Oh fuck! Here's a nice article about the whole debacle, some choices quotes:

For $75, attendees would get into the Walter E. Washington Convention Center for two days, where they could play video games, talk to video-game creators, listen to panels on the future of video games, listen to a concert of the music of video games, and compete in video-game tournaments with prizes up to $10,000. Hand-held games, console games, even vintage games by makers such as Atari.

They paid for Metro advertisements, a professionally designed Web site and $80,000 in draping and signage

They could save it for next year. Even though they had lost money, they said, there would be a next year.

“I think,” Diaz said, “we can go bigger.”

These people are insane.
