A Thousand Sons is a REAL GOOD audiobook so far. Holy shit it took a chapter or 2 to start moving but once it has shit got EPIC.

Abnett has finished Warmaster (will be out in November/December I think) and is already working on Anarch, the fourth and final book of the current Gaunt arc. But he might put that on hold to work on more Heresy stuff, as the series is moving to its final stages. There is a recent interview with him here.

McNeill moved to America and is working for Riot now.

McNeill info is sad. Good for him though as Riot probably pays bank.

ADB is probably my favorite author they have going at the moment.

would love for him to do a HBO warhammer 40k series.

the 13th black crusade and fall of Cadia would be a good jumping off introduction point to 40k. Stays in the perspective of a IMperial guard leaving "insert random imperial planet" they land on cadia and initially fight tratior gaurds. as the war expands whispers of monsters. THen space marines start showing up, brief walk byes. War grows sounding dire more marines, black templar wolves, other well known marines show up.

war is going really bad, now follows the same imperial guardsman assisting cawl and marines trying to get off cadia. glimpes of taryzn the infinite. You see chaos marines deamons and amrines fighting in front of you. you flee to the caverns, tarzyn shows up releases a company of hersey era ultras with a custode, the by time as you flee.

huge deamon swarm led by a blood thristers, Wulfen come roaring in past you.

I'd watch the shit outta that, straight horror stories, nightmarish visions.


god, forgot about the marine suicide run in the last remaning imperial ship the fire howlers great company ship. gathered the remnants of the remaining chapters 250 marines~ they ram there ship into the black stone fortress and all presumably die fighting to reach the blackstones shield generators and destroying them. allowing the phalanx to destroy it

I want a WH40k animated series, tbh. It'd be easier to portray all the crazy things, and the potential for stylization would be amazing. (Like, imagine the crazy shit you can do with warp stuff in animation instead of live action CGI.)

Even less chance of that happening, tho.

I own some of their other games. While I think the system has merit they are HORRIBLE about rules/translation issues. They throw out stuff to buy before they have rules fully done. If GW does not keep a firm standard for them you will be going to a store to buy a Space Wolf pack that has zero rules available.

This week I added Longstrike, a Hammerhead for him to go in, a Commander in a crisis suit and an Optimised Pathfinder Team with the intent of turning the Devilfish into a second Hammerhead using the spare turret. I blame the price of Riptides going up in 8th and making my 500 point list invalid.

Yeah I backed their KS so I'm going to wait how that turns out, already delayed a month because of ruletweaking and pledge manager not being closed.
I can preorder until September so ya never know.

ADB I think talked to Black Library about this guy and they have an informal thing where they are letting him do it. ADB blogged about it at one point. It is very very cool.

Friend tried ordering a Baneblade from shop around here last week. Owner said he'd get it ordered, and it should be ready this week. So friend called again yesterday, and the owner said he hadn't gotten it ordered yet for all kinds of reasons, and to call back today. Today he calls and finds out that supposedly it'll be weeks before, because GW is having to re-package a bunch of their stuff with 8th edition rules. So now this thing he has been dying to get his hands on, that he was going to get this week early, and then tomorrow, turned into 3-4 weeks. Now he is desperate and looking around where he can find one. He doesn't want to buy put-together on EBay. What sucks is last week they were in stock on GW site. Now they aren't...

Sounds like the owner is a lazy ass

My friend tried returning stuff he ordered through the store, but the owner didnt want to do it. So my friend had to call GWs online help, and get them to talk to the owner to return it lol.

Actually, pretty much everything that owner said is accurate. Almost every Astra Militarum tank model has been unavailable to order for shops for about 2 weeks (and a bunch of the Space Marine ones too). We had someone put in an order for some Leman Russ tanks and we're being told it will be at least 2 weeks before they ship from our GW rep. Often things will appear "available" on the website but already not available for stores because we're always a week or two ahead of their online retail shop in terms of both pre-order availability and sold-out stock.

Also, GW's turnaround for orders, at least in the US, from "independent retailers" is like 4-5 days without rush shipping (which costs the store money - unless it's something GW screwed up). We usually have to have our order in by Monday evening to have items appear in our regular shipment that comes in Friday afternoon. Sometimes we can get away with putting something in early Tuesday. But we get a ton of people who come in Monday afternoon and order something thinking it will be in the shop by the weekend - often it won't be, because it did not hit the regular shipment this week and won't be arriving until the following Friday, at the earliest. And that's assuming it doesn't fall temporarily out of stock in the meantime.

But also, in my experience, most FLGS store owners are incredibly lazy, yes.

Thanks, have been trying to figure out why I'd want to pay more points to upgrade the gun drones on a Hammerhead to burst cannons when they have the exact same weapon profile and don't have the option to detach.

Space Marines already had, arguably, the most diverse army in 40k. The Primaris marines fill niches within the armies that prety much didn't exist, yet look to enhance the army very effectively in subtle ways.

I hope they flesh out other armies in a similar fashion.

The new chaplain looks awesome. The fists on the Agressors look a little goofy, same with the helms on the plasma Inceptors. These are the first Primaris figures that miss the mark for me.

Finished book 3 of Horus Heresy. That was...not very good. Book 1 has been favorite so far. Think I am going to put these on hold to try to build motivation, and finish reading Ultramarines. I'll write up my thoughts later as I've read 5 Warhammer books altogether now since asking for recommendations 2 months ago, and have many random thoughts. I trust I can post my thoughts without being spoiled. I've still read 0 lore out of rule books or anything, wanting to read as much as I can in a linear order. Very much in the dark on this world.

I've been reading the Horus Heresy books from the beginning for the first time as well. I've finished the first five, and Horus Rising is head and shoulders above the others, although books four (Flight of the Eisenstein) and five (Fulgrim) are definitely a step up.

Once you get past the firsf few HH books the order becomes a lot more flexible; you would be fine reading them in release order, or picking and choosing certain plotlines. I've been thinking of skipping ahead and reading all the books that relate to the Ultramarines and Word Bearers at Calth (I have the boxed game and am excited to paint it up as UM's and WB's).

I took a break to read Dark Imperium (the new book that accompanies the new edition) and am enjoying it a lot.

Should be obvious, but spoilers below for first 3 Horus books.

Horus Rising
I went into Horus Rising with tons of expectations, most of them negative. I don't know why, but I expected this to be a poorly written, over-the-top cheese fest of betrayal right off the bat. I was wrong. This book is very well written. Written well enough that I went from thinking little to nothing of Loken to really rooting for him. I don't know when it happened, but at some point I realized I really liked him. Also, I expected Horus and the rest of the Mournival to be evil by the time the book started, just hidden in the background. I was surprised to learn they were good people. Horus especially. And it wasn't just a chapter of him being good, then bam, now he is evil and mean because his feelings were hurt. They really took their time in these first books building him up. You can see why this charismatic character was loved. Why he had so many followers. Why the emperor himself would choose him.

Dan Abnett really knows how to do tension. When Loken and team are on Terra (new) coming down on insurgents, or whatever you wanna call them, and we hear the speech about "...Samus is all around you. Samus is the man beside you. Samus will gnaw upon you bones. Look out! Samus is here." Lord, I was on the figurative edge of my seat. His writing really is great, and he built up to that moment so well.

False Gods
I was bummed to see DA didn't write this book, since I found Graham McNeil's writing with the Ultramarines books to be a little more...simplistic? In the Ultramarines books, he likes to remind you every chapter about how big the space marines are, about how special they are, their blood clotting crap, blah blah blah. I still enjoy the books, but he has some very specific things he repeats over-and-over. Well, color me surprised...the dude knows how to write. Maybe he just has a very specific style he likes to write the Ultramarine books in, because this book felt like a whole different author.

Overall, I enjoyed the book. There is nothing specific that jumped out to me that I loved or hated, but it did a good enough job carrying over from the first book. Once again, I'm happy to see them taking their time with the downfall of Horus. It wasn't "Chapter 1" and all of the sudden he is different. They really took their time, and I appreciate that.

Also, Keeler calling out the power of emperor, or whatever the hell she did to that demon...I was not expecting that. Loved it.

Galaxy in Flames
Sorry---I'm getting lazy as I go on and writing less, but I thought this book was a hot mess. Horus went from clear and explicit to enigmatic, which isn't to say I didn't buy it...it's just a shame, because he also lost his charisma. In the author's attempt to keep him and his plans more mysterious (I'm guessing), they also cut back on his appearance time. We saw way less of Horus in this book than the previous two. And when we did see him, he had lost all of his fun. He was charismatic as a good guy...why not when bad? Especially since he still thought he was doing good. I just...can't put my finger on it. But yeah...boo to Horus.

Also, we FINALLY get some betrayal and brother-on-brother fighting within the last 100 pages of Galaxy in Flames. They charge at each other AAAANNNDDDD....we cut to 3 months alter. Are. You. Shitting. Me. I've never been so pissed. What a lazy freaking cop out. Feel free to time skip, but for the love of god, establish a baseline first. Let me see what the first day or week of skirmishes is like. To just jump and see how things have gotten to a stalemate was mind blowing. I nearly put the book down, but I was too close to the end to quit. Blah...


Overall
These books have been slowly building up. And I expected that buildup to explode at the end of book 3. If this is a preview of how conflicts go down, I am disappointing and not interested in more of these books. There was no tension in the final book, no mystery, no excitement, no fun. Why is it I had more fun when they weren't fighting in book 1 than when they were in book 3?

Random Nitpicks (coming from someone who still overall liked these books) :

- Horus' turn is very important to believe. And I just couldn't believe it. Not to the magnitude it gets to anyway, that he is murdering space marines. He is sad because he realizes he was created by the emperor (I didn't realize they didn't know this already...) but what did him in is that the emperor is interested in godhood, and only using primarchs to help him achieve this. But who is the person convincing Horus? Oh, no one...just the guy that tried to kill Horus. And at no point, ever, does Horus directly comment on the fact that the man who was convincing him of the emperor's quest for godhood was the man who tried to kill him. Not even in book 3 does this get brought up. Does he not realize this? Because as prideful as Horus is, you would think at minimum he would murder Erebus, even if he believed him and wanted to go against the emperor. It seems really out-of-personality that he wouldn't. But ok...no big deal. Let's pretend that is all fine, and continue this nitpick:

-Loken doesn't accomplish SHIT in the end of book 2, or all of book 3. Please, someone tell me I am completely wrong, because I love Loken. But what does he achieve? When he puts the pieces together about Erebus, Tarik suggests they need to tell the others. Loken doesn't want to yet...but he never directly says why. And guess what? This is never come back to. At no point do we have a moment where it shows Loken trying to convince anyone else of the mournival that Erebus is a piece of garbage that tried to murder the emperor. Way too late in book 3, after months of time skip, he talks to Abaddon about how they are going down a dangerous path, and yadda-yadda, and Abaddon gives no shits. I completely understand at this point, since he has already had time to be indoctrinated by Horus. But this seems like a sloppy cover-up for the fact that if Loken had told the others what he found out at ANY point while they were waiting for Horus to come out those 7-9 days, or directly after on the ship, this story seems like it would have gone way differently. Now, I can play out how these conversations may or may not have gone down, but I shouldn't have to leave it to my imagination since the betrayal of Erebus is such a huge part in these books. I can go on and on, but let's jump to book 3. What does Loken actually achieve against Horus? Nothing. Tarvitz is the one who comes down to warn everyone of the virus bomb. And Tarvitz is the one to command the defenses. Loken got pushed into the backseat, turning a smart and fun truth seeker into a useless moron.

-Question: Chapter Masters are mentioned in Book 3 when Loken was looking at war relics. I didn't think Chapter Masters were a thing yet...?

I'm going to stop rambling here. Need a break.

About the chapter masters: the legions are subdivided into chapters, which are further divided into companies.
